Abstract: Methods and systems are described that can be used for locating conductive bodies such as wellbore casing or piping disposed below the earth's surface. An electrical current can be excited in a conductive body in each wellbore in a given area to produce a magnetic field, and the magnetic field can be detected by a ranging tool. Location and current parameters can be determined for an estimated number of wellbores producing non-negligible contributions to the magnetic field, and the estimated number of wellbores can be adjusted until the number of contributing wellbores is determined. Location solutions can be returned for each of the contributing wellbores, and the location solutions can be employed to facilitate exploration of drilling applications such as well avoidance, well intersection and/or steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) steering operations.

Abstract: A steerable drilling apparatus includes a control system inside a cylindrical housing connected to a drill bit having radially-extendable pistons. A fluid-metering assembly directs a piston actuating fluid into fluid channels in the drill bit leading to respective pistons. The control system controls the fluid-metering assembly to selectively allow fluid flow through the fluid channels to the pistons and to exit through orifices in the fluid channels. The selective fluid flow causes the actuated piston to temporarily extend in the opposite direction to a desired wellbore deviation, thereby deflecting the drill bit away from the borehole centerline. An upper member in the fluid-metering assembly can be moved to stabilize, steer, and change TFA within the drill bit. Abstract: A main borehole is drilled into an underground reservoir comprising a plurality of layers of different fluid mobilities. The fluid mobility in each of the plurality of layers is determined. A number of lateral boreholes extending from the main borehole in each of the plurality of layers are then drilled based on the determined fluid mobility in each of the plurality of layers, such that resulting fluid production rates in each of the plurality of layers are substantially similar.

  • Patent number: 8752651
Abstract: A method for forming lateral boreholes from an existing wellbore is provided. The method comprises providing a downhole tool assembly having a whipstock with a curved face. The whipstock is run into the wellbore in a collapsed position. A force is applied to the assembly to cause the whipstock to rotate into an operating position. In this position, the curved face of the whipstock forms a bend-radius that allows a jetting hose to bend across the entire inner diameter of the production casing. A jetting hose is run into the wellbore and along the curved face of the whipstock. The jetting hose is then directed through a window in the production casing. Hydraulic fluid is injected through the hose to create a lateral borehole extending many feet outwardly into a subsurface formation. A downhole jetting assembly for forming lateral boreholes is also provided.

Abstract: A tool for making up and breaking out a drill string at an exit side of a bore. The tool includes a fixed vice and a moveable vice for torqueing a pipe joint, a roller assembly for threading and unthreading adjacent sections of pipe, and a retainer assembly to retain a detached pipe section. The components of the tool are mounted on a frame, which is pivotally connected to a hydraulic machine such as an excavator. Thus, the tool may be manipulated to remove and add sections of pipe to a drill string remote from the primary horizontal directional drill.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the configuration of an elongate inner member of a dual-member pipe. The elongate inner member of the dual-member pipe is disposed within an outer member and rotatable independent of the outer member. The inner member comprises a geometrically-shaped pin end and a box end having a geometrically-shaped opening. The geometrically-shaped opening of the box end has at least one internal angle greater than 180 degrees. The pin end of the inner member may be inserted into the box end of an adjacent similarly formed inner member to form an inner member pipe joint. The configuration of the pin end and the box end allows the pin end and the box end to be in connector free torque-transmitting engagement but also provides clearance for potential misalignment of the pin end and the box during make-up of an inner member drill string.
