  • Patent number: 7025152
Abstract: A rotating inner member is used to drive a downhole tool housed within the hollow outer member of a dual-member drill string. The downhole tool preferably will be adapted to receive rotational energy from the inner member. In a preferred embodiment, the downhole tool is an electric generator connected to a downhole electric device. In another preferred embodiment the downhole tool is a mechanical transmission that uses the rotational energy from the inner member to drive a non-electric tool, such as a downhole hammer. This invention will increase the consistency and efficiency of downhole energy production.

Abstract: A method for generating a new or corrected horizontal underground bore path from a point below ground for use with a horizontal boring machine. In the preferred embodiment, orientation and depth measurements for a boring tool located below ground are recorded. The current position of the boring tool is determined using a previously determined position, measured orientation of the boring tool, and calculating for pipe bend characteristics. Previous measurements and determined positions are recorded to provide a map of the bore. A new path is calculated using the current position as a starting point and through predetermined critical points for the bore. Instructions for drilling the next segment of the bore are made available to an operator or to a control system for a boring machine.

Since the shape of the excavating surface on the work face formed by the cutter is set by a curvature, upon advance of the shield machine by boring through the tunnel wall, the tunnel wall to be excavated, the shape of which is cylindrical, can be cut into by opening a hole which extends diametrically outward from the central portion of the cutter. • Patent number: 6682264
Abstract: A method for the trenchless installation of new underground pipe accurately on line and on grade by microtunneling to install a pilot tube, installing a drill string along the pilot pipe line using a directional drilling machine, installing a back reamer to the drill string and using a directional drilling machine to pull back the reamer and install a product pipe behind the reamer. A pilot tube is installed on line and on grade by utilizing the guidance system of a microtunneling apparatus to install a pilot tubes between jacking and target shafts. A drill string is installed to displace the pilot tubes and a back reamer is attached to the drill string with a product pipe attached to the reamer. The reamer may be pulled using any suitable pulling device such as a directional drilling machine.

  • Patent number: 6672409
Abstract: A generator assembly for generating power in the downhole end of a drill string used to form a borehole in horizontal directional drilling. The drill string provides a fluid passageway in which the downhole generator is receivingly disposed, at least in part, to subject a rotatable turbine to a pressurized fluid flowing in the fluid passageway, thereby imparting a mechanical rotation to the turbine. The turbine is coupled to a generator so that the mechanical rotation of the turbine is transferred to a power output of the generator.

  • Patent number: 6668944
Abstract: Specific methods are described for use in tracking and/or guiding the movement of an underground boring tool. In one aspect, an improvement is provided forming part of an arrangement for tracking the position and/or guiding the boring tool using an electromagnetic locating signal which is transmitted from the boring tool as the boring tool moves through the ground. At least two detectors are located at fixed positions within the region, each being operable in a transmit mode and in a receive mode such that each one of the detectors in the transmit mode is able to transmit a relative locating signal to the other detector for use in determining the relative position of one detector in relation to the other and such that both detectors receive the electromagnetic locating signal in the receive mode for use in determining the position of the boring tool within the region.

  • Patent number: 6652190
Abstract: A method and apparatus for installing a pipe casing underground without a trench for distances up to 400 feet with pipe casing up to 168 inches in diameter. The system uses a modified high energy piling hammer to mobilize the energy to drive the casings or tubings that make up the instant tunnel. An example of a piling hammer used in the present invention is the IHC Hydrohammer line of models in between the S-90 and S-280. Specific models planned to be used in this invention, depending on diameter and length requirements and type of soil in the planned alignment, are the Models S-90, S-150, S-280, S-400 and S-500. The present invention's Hydrohammers are needed to be held against the casing pipe to be driven with a force equal to the reactional force of the hammer during recharging of the hammer's system. A special helmet and cutting head increase operational capabilities.

  • Patent number: 6648069
Abstract: The well reference apparatus and method of the present invention includes a reference member preferably permanently installed within the borehole at a preferred depth and orientation in one trip into the well. The reference member provides a permanent reference for the location of all operations, particularly in a multi-lateral well. The assembly of the present invention includes disposing the reference member on the end of a pipe string. An orienting tool such as an MWD collar is disposed in the pipe string above the reference member. This assembly is lowered into the borehole on the pipe string. Once the preferred depth is attained, the MWD is activated to determine the orientation of the reference member. If the reference member is not oriented in the preferred direction, the pipe string is rotated to align the reference member in the preferred direction. This process is repeated for further corrective action and to verify the proper orientation of the reference member.
