Abstract: An indexing tool for use with flexible coiled tubing in downhole applications to clear obstructions is provided. The indexing tool includes a housing having a central longitudinal bore. A plunger having a longitudinal axis and biased by a spring is received and movable longitudinally within the bore between retracted and extended positions. A channel formed on the plunger receives channel followers in the form of guide pins to cause the plunger to rotate about its longitudinal axis as the plunger is moved between the retracted and extended position. A limiting member of the plunger engages stop members to limit the movement of the plunger beyond the retracted and extended position, so the guide pins do not bear the longitudinal forces exerted on plunger. The guide pins are also provided with a head having a seating surface to facilitate tightening of the guide pins and to prevent further insertion of the guide pins.

Because the fit of the sealing surfaces of the valve is less than perfect, and because the voids on mating surfaces do not necessarily overlap, the 5% of the surface area comprising interconnected voids can easily translate to a 10% or more reduction in sealed area when both sealing surfaces have the interconnecting voids. The additional reduction in surface area subjected to differential pressure has substantially eliminated the hydraulic lock problem previously encountered upon startup.

Abstract: An actuator for an orienting device for orienting a borehole apparatus in a borehole and an orienting device comprised of the actuator, wherein the orienting device is comprised of an orienting mechanism which is actuated by longitudinal movement. The actuator is comprised of a housing having a first end and a second end and a fluid passageway extending through the housing from the first end to the second end. Further, a longitudinally reciprocable piston, positioned within and providing a first partial obstruction of the fluid passageway, engages with the orienting mechanism such that longitudinal movement of the piston actuates the orienting mechanism.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling an underground boring machine during boring or reaming operations. A boring tool is displaced along an underground path while being rotated. In response to variations in underground conditions impacting boring tool progress along the underground path, a control system modifies the rate of boring tool displacement along the underground path while rotating the boring tool at a selected rotation rate to optimize excavation productivity. The controller may also monitor the rate at which liquid is pumped through the borehole and automatically adjust the rate of displacement and/or the liquid flow rate so that sufficient liquid is flowing through the borehole to remove the cuttings and debris generated by the boring tool.

  • Publication number: 20020112887
Abstract: A directional borehole drilling system employs a controllable drill bit, which includes one or more conical drilling surfaces. Instrumentation located near the bit measures present position when the bit is static, and dynamic toolface when the bit is rotating. This data is processed to determine the error between the present position and a desired trajectory, and the position of one or more of the bit's cones is automatically changed as needed to make the bit bore in the direction necessary to reduce the error. The controllable drill bit preferably comprises three cone assemblies mounted about the bit's central axis, each of which includes a leg with “toed-out” axle. In response to a command signal, a cone translates along the axle to cause it to bear more of the bit weight, thus excavating more deeply over the commanded toolface sector and causing the bit to bore in a preferred direction.

Abstract: A packerfoot includes a bladder assembly comprising an elongated generally tubular inflatable bladder having ends bonded to generally rigid bladder attachment portions. The bladder includes end portions bonded to the bladder attachment portions and a central inflatable portion. The bladder comprises multiple layers of rubber, one or more of which are reinforced by fibers, preferably S-glass. At each end of the bladder, the layers terminate at different longitudinal positions, forming annular steps on the exterior surface of the bladder. Conforming annular steps are formed on the interior surface of the bladder attachment portions. The bladder ends are bonded to the bladder attachment portions such that the annular steps of the bladder conform to the annular steps of the bladder attachment portions. The total bond length of the bladder to the bladder attachment portions is greater than or equal to twice the length of the inflatable portion of the bladder.

Abstract: Enhanced horizontal drilling systems and methods encompass the production of crude oil from wells drilled from a subterranean production facility. This approach has the location of the well head below the oil reservoir to improve flow rate and recovery due to the consistent voiding of fluids by gravity flow within the well bore to the well head allowing well bore production pressure to achieve extremely low fluid pressure or even a vacuum of up to 15 PSI. This method increases oil recovery rate and factor, and lowers production costs. The present method is production of shallow crude oil by way of long horizontal or near horizontal boreholes drilled and serviced from a subsurface workroom. The subsurface workroom serves as both the drilling platform and the place to which production is centrally accumulated from the wells. Oil is collected in a central facility and is then lifted to the surface utilizing pumps.
