  • Patent number: 7381910
Abstract: A bed scale system includes at least one sensor frame having structure for generating a weight signal of a curved object such as a supporting wheel on a hospital bed or the like. The sensor frame includes a pair of spaced sidewalls defining a receiving area for the curved object, a bottom surface connected between the spaced sidewalls, and a deflection tab cooperable with the bottom surface. The deflection tab is deflected relative to the spaced sidewalls upon an application of weight to the sidewalls. A strain gauge is secured to the deflection tab and outputs a weight signal corresponding to the weight of the curved object according to a deflection amount of the deflection tab. The economical system provides patient weight without requiring removal of the patient from bed.

  • Patent number: 6894232
Abstract: The invention is a device and means that reduces the amount of overloading and under-loading of plastic grocery bags. A bag rack has a scale attached to its base with the scale connected to an indicator. The plastic bag rests on the scale which weighs the contents of the bag as they are being added. The indicator checks the weight of the contents of the bag. If the contents are under the targeted weight an indicator is lit, when the targeted weigh is reached another indicator is lit, and if a “not to exceed weight” is reached a warning indicator is lit.

  • Patent number: 6521847
Abstract: A scale is disclosed for weighing moving loads. The scale includes a weighing platform having entrance and exit ends. The platform is connected to a tipping member mounted to pivot about a fulcrum. A weighing device is operatively connected to the fulcrum. Downward movement of the platform entrance end causes the tipping member to pivot in a first direction and downward movement of the platform exit end causes the tipping member to pivot in a second direction. First and second stops limit movement of the tipping member in the first and second directions, respectively. As a load enters the platform, the tipping member pivots against the first stop such that the weight is distributed between the fulcrum and the stop. As the load approaches the center of the platform, the tipping member pivots off of the first stop such that the weight is measurable by the weighing device.

  • Patent number: 6380496
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for weighing wheeled or wheel- or caster-supported loads, including non-ambulatory patients confined to wheeled beds, which combines lift, support, and weight-measuring functions. The apparatus (10) is lightweight, portable, and employs a foot-activated lever-based design, including a foot bar (51) and pivoting wheel receptacle (50), for raising both the load and the load's wheeled support, if any. The apparatus (10) can be positioned for use without moving the load, and, because the apparatus utilizes leg and lower body strength, operators need not possess substantial arm or upper body strength. Thus, injuries which result from improper lifting techniques are avoided.

  • Patent number: 5742010
Abstract: A hay baler scale is provided for automatically weighing hay bales as they emerge from a hay baler. It includes a weighing platform attached to opening of a chute of the hay baler, and a controller with a display. When a hay bale emerges from the baler, it is rotated a quarter turn by the chute and ejected onto the weighing platform. The controller is programmed to wait until the bale has stopped bouncing by ignoring the first readings, take multiple samples of the bale's weight, and show the average on the display in about 0.75 second. The controller thus ensures that a reasonably accurate weighing is performed despite the weighing platform being attached to a moving and vibrating hay baler. In a second embodiment, the weighing platform is attached to the top of a chute, so that the bales slide onto the platform without turning.

  • Patent number: 5723825
Abstract: An apparatus and method for feeding a mailpiece into and out of a weighing module. The apparatus comprises a device for feeding the mailpiece; and a device for positioning the feeding device in a first position for receiving the mailpiece from a first direction and feeding the mailpiece into the weighing module. Additionally, the positioning device moves the feeding device into a second position for feeding the mailpiece in a second direction out of the weighing module. The feed device includes a drive roller and an idler roller for keeping the mailpiece in operative engagement with the drive roller. The method comprises the steps of: (a) positioning a feeding device in a first position for receiving the mailpiece from a first direction; (b) feeding the mailpiece in the first direction into the weighing module; and (c) positioning the feeding device in a second position for feeding the mailpiece in a second direction out of the weighing module.

  • Patent number: 5545856
Abstract: A product distribution system includes a cone shaped member for receiving a mass of solid flowable product thereon and a pair of concentric downwardly extending cylindrical walls. A top portion of the first of the downwardly extending cylindrical walls is adjacent to and abutting the base of the cone shaped member. A plurality of circularly arranged electromagnetic feeders which extend outwardly in a radial direction from the cone shaped member are disposed below the cone shaped member at the bottom of the first cylindrical wall, and in close proximity thereto, for moving product away from the first cylindrical wall and toward a plurality of circularly arranged weigh hoppers. The second cylindrical wall or retaining member has a diameter which is greater than the first cylindrical wall and together with the first wall forms a circular trough at the base of the cone shaped member.

  • Patent number: 5086856
Abstract: A weighing method for a wheel supported load, such as a hospital bed, uses a weighing device having a base with a flat bottom surface, and a track surface for a wheel arranged parallel to the bottom surface. The track surface is supported on an arrangement for sensing weight which includes a pair of cantilever bending beams with strain gages, and one end of the track surface extends beyond the end of the flat bottom surface. To start weighing, the weighing device is first tilted, so the track surface can be wedged between a wheel and the floor. In this position the track surface acts as a ramp for the wheel. The wheel is next rolled up onto the track surface until it is above the front edge of the flat bottom surface. At this point the weighing device will flip over by gravity to rest on the flat bottom surface, and the weighing of the load can be done without risk for force shunting to the floor. A weighing device suitable for use with the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4696358
Abstract: To weigh objects in quick succession, the objects are projected with a known horizontal velocity onto a ramp which has a surface which curves down through 90.degree.. The ramp can move horizontally in response to the impulse corresponding to the change in horizontal momentum of the object. A transducer senses the movement of the ramp and the output horizontal velocity of the object is sensed, enabling the change in horizontal velocity to be calculated. The mass of the object is calculated from the horizontal movement of the ramp and the change in horizontal velocity of the object. In order to obtain accurate sensing of the movement of the ramp, the transducer is a linear variable differential transformer having a primary winding energized by a cyclical carrier signal and two matched secondary windings in series; the secondary winding output signal is rectified to a corresponding DC voltage having ripple components, and a sample is taken of the signal at the zero voltage of the principal ripple component.
