Independently Operable Drive Motors Patents (Class 180/6.48)
  • Patent number: 7258181
Abstract: An omni direction vehicle (ODV) with a frame having a round surface about its perimeter rotatably coupled to a trailer mule hitch assembly having an axle, wheels and a fifth wheel plate located generally above the axle. Two independent drive wheels located on an axis through the center of the ODV frame are mounted at the same distance from a central vertical axis through the frame. Each wheel is powered independently of the other and can rotate at variable speeds in either direction. The ODV is capable of movement in any direction by rotating the axis of the drive wheels to a position which is perpendicular to the desired direction of travel. The ODV can spin about its vertical axis such that the axis of the drive wheels can be oriented at any direction without changing the original footprint of the space that the frame occupies over the ground. Thus, the combined ODV/trailer mule hitch assembly can rotate about the center of the fifth wheel plate.

  • Patent number: 7213662
Abstract: A mower includes an engine-driven transmission for driving a pair of wheels at rate that varies according to the position of a transmission setting control selected by an operator. The transmission setting control positions a member that has a stop surface proximate to a transmission speed input on the transmission. The transmission speed input is adjusted by one or more levers on the mower. The transmission setting control is adjusted to define a home position of the stop surface relative to the transmission speed input and define a range of travel of the transmission speed input before it contacts the stop surface. The member is spring biased toward the home position but is moveable away from the home position. The position of the transmission speed input when it contacts the stop surface defines a first rate of travel of the transmission. An operator applies a first amount of force to the lever until the transmission speed input contacts the stop surface.

A microprocessor controls the operation of the at least two wheels in accordance with signals received by the microprocessor. The mower has at least one controller. The at least one controller sends signals to the microprocessor that the microprocessor uses to control the operation of the at least two wheels. The operation of the at least one controller causes the at least two wheels to propel and steer the mower.

  • Patent number: 6786289
Abstract: A skid steer vehicle has a drive system that includes hydraulic motor coupled to a reduction gearbox. A driveshaft extends fore-and-aft from the gearbox and is coupled at each end to a combined housing including a reduction gear set and an axle. The axle extends laterally outward from the vehicle and a wheel is fixed to its outer end. There are two housings on either end of the driveshaft. There are two such drive systems on the vehicle, one on either side. Thus the vehicle has two separate drive systems, each capable of independently driving two wheels on opposing sides of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6755264
Abstract: A transmission for speed changing and steering of a vehicle comprises a first HST and a first differential for speed changing and a second HST and a second differential for steering. The first HST is a combination of a hydraulic pump and motor. The pump is driven by an engine and the motor is drivingly changeable by operation of a speed change pedal. Output power from the motor is transmitted into a pair of first differential output shafts as axles through the first differential. The second HST is a combination of a hydraulic pump and motor. The second pump is driven by output power from the first HST and the second motor is drivingly changeable by operation of a steering wheel. A pair of second differential output shafts are rotated in opposite directions by output power of the motor, so that when turning, the first differential output shaft on the opposite side of the turning direction is accelerated.

Abstract: An omni direction vehicle with a frame having a round surface about its perimeter with no apparatus mounted on the frame extending beyond the perimeter. Two independent drive wheels located on an axis through the center of the frame are mounted at the same distance from a central vertical axis through the frame. Each wheel is powered independently of the other and can rotate at variable speeds in either direction. The vehicle is capable of movement in any direction by rotating the axis of the drive wheels to a position which is perpendicular to the desired direction of travel. The vehicle can spin about its vertical axis such that the axis of the drive wheels can be oriented at any direction without changing the original footprint of the space that the frame occupies over the ground. Thus, the vehicle requires a zero turning radius and requires only the space it occupies to change its forward orientation.
