Patent number: 7055649Abstract: Sound attenuating laminates, and methods of making the same, are provided. Heat is applied to a surface of a non-woven, fibrous layer of material to form a stratum of melted fibers having a density greater than that of the remainder of the fibrous layer. The density of the melted fibers is effective in attenuating noise traversing the fibrous layer of material. Upholstery material, such as carpeting, is attached to the surface of the heated fibrous layer. The fibrous layer and upholstery material are then subjected to compressive molding pressure to obtain a desired shape. The compressive molding pressure may further tune the sound attenuating properties of the fibrous layer by selectively changing the densities of portions of the fibrous layer.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2004Date of Patent: June 6, 2006Assignee: Collins & Aikman Products Co.Inventors: Graham Tompson, Surendra Khambete, Fred Skidmore, Bill Griffin

Patent number: 6581720Abstract: An improved heat shield offers both a thermal insulation and reduced noise transmission for vehicular engine components, including exhaust manifolds, for example. The structure has three layers: an outer structural metal layer, a center insulation layer to isolate heat and dampen noise, and an inner metal layer directly adjacent the shielded component for reflecting heat back to the shielded component. As disclosed, the heat shield includes at least one bolt aperture for attachment of the shield to a shielded component, such as an exhaust manifold in the described embodiment. The aperture is circumferentially bordered by at least one non-planar undulation defining a protuberance. The protuberance is spaced circumferentially about the aperture. As the bolted connection of the heat shield to the manifold is a major source of vibration transmittal from the manifold into the shield, the protuberance is effective to dampen the vibration, and hence noise associated with the vibration.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2001Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Dana CorporationInventors: Colin Ching-Ho Chen, Mark Boogemans, Calin Matias

Patent number: 6512831Abstract: Apparatus for reducing noise emitted from an appliance having a cabinet that supports at least one component that emits at least one acoustic pressure wave therefrom. In a preferred form, the apparatus comprises at least one diffuser having at least one deflection surface. The diffuser is coupled to the cabinet and positioned relative to the one component such that the acoustic pressure wave emitted from the component is deflected by the one deflection surface in a predetermined direction. The diffuser can be used to deflect acoustic pressure waves such that they collide with each other. The apparatus may further include at least one absorber. The diffuser is strategically located to deflect acoustic pressure waves being emitted from the component into the absorber to reduce the noise emitted from the appliance.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1998Date of Patent: January 28, 2003Assignee: Owens Corning Fiberglas Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kevin M. Patent number: 6488001Abstract: An injector is stored in a fixing block integrally formed with an intake manifold. A soundproof cover covers the entire electric supply terminal projecting from the injector in a lateral direction and the coupler connected to the plug. In addition, the soundproof cover brought into close contact with a fuel distribution pipe covering over top portions of a plurality of injectors to supply fuel and with the intake manifold to prevent operating sound from leaking out. Further, a hard material cover for covering the fixing block of the intake manifold, the soundproof cover and the fuel distribution pipe so as to improve its aesthetic appearance as well as its soundproof effect is also provided. This arrangement results in shutting off operating sound from an injector of an engine having a cylinder head projecting in a transverse direction of a vehicle body.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2001Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Koji Suzuki, Koji Kano, Akira Sonobata
