  • Patent number: 6983820
Abstract: In order to form a noise suppressor in a hose of e.g. a motor vehicle, modular portions are connected in series to define suppression chambers with particular noise suppression characteristics. Those characteristics are due to the volume of each chamber, to the size of the apertures from the chambers to the central duct of the suppressor, and optionally due to spacers which are inserted into at least one aperture of the chambers to alter the effective open area of that aperture. Such spacers may also be used in which the noise suppressor is not modular. Where modular portions are used, it is preferable that each chamber is bounded by parts of two modular portions. A wall of one modular portion may then close the chamber in another modular portion, making the manufacture of the modular portions easier. Also disclosed is the use of a mass acting as a damper, which may be a noise suppressor as previously discussed, within a hose. The mass is connected to the hose by resilient means, e.g. electrometric material.

A tail pipe is inserted in the spark arrester body and is mounted on the spark arrester such that exhaust gas flowing through the muffler is discharged into the atmospheric air from the tail pipe through the spark arrester, to carry out, expansion and contraction of exhaust gas in the spark arrester occurs to augment the sound reduction performance. An annular partition plate cooperates with an inner face of a spark arrester body to form a throttle path therebetween that is securely mounted on a tail pipe wherein a plurality of expansion chambers that communicate with each other through the throttle path are formed between the tail pipe and the spark arrester body with the annular partition plate disposed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6585078
Abstract: An insert assembly for a muffler of a high-performance motor cycle, having an insert with a filling of compressed heat-resistant, sound-absorbing material mounted on a removable hollow tube having an inside diameter greater than the outside diameter of the perforated core of the muffler. The filling includes a bulked-up continuous filamentary material. Once the insert has been introduced into the muffler by sliding the tube along the core, the tube is then withdrawn leaving the insert behind in the muffler. Removal of the tube allows the filling to relax towards its intended density. The first subsequent exposure to hot exhaust gases causes certain portions of the insert to degrade, allowing further relaxation of the filling to assume its intended density. Further, the tube precludes potential damage to the insert during its introduction into the muffler.

Abstract: Heat shielding panels are attached to exhaust pipes and a silencer by using small set springs and large set springs. Distortion on a heat shielded panel, which would be caused when attaching a heat shielding panel through welding, is not caused. A process for positioning a bracket, which would be required when welding a bracket to an exhaust pipe, can be omitted. Moreover, as no bolt and nut is used, the number of parts can be reduced. As a result, productivity can be improved and an increase in the cost can be suppressed.

Abstract: A loose fiber packing material for a muffler of an internal combustion engine is temporarily confined in a transfer cartridge, having a shape which is substantially complementary or somewhat smaller than the muffler cavity. The transfer cartridge is adapted to receive a pushing device for discharging the loose fiber packing material from the transfer cartridge into the muffler cavity during manufacture of the muffler. The transfer cartridge allows loose fiber packing to be prepacked, shipped and directly transferred to a muffler cavity without the use of molding resins or packaging materials which would otherwise be inserted into the muffler along with the loose fiber packing material and burned away during initial use of the muffler, causing undesirable smoke and odor.
