Patent number: 6983820Abstract: In order to form a noise suppressor in a hose of e.g. a motor vehicle, modular portions are connected in series to define suppression chambers with particular noise suppression characteristics. Those characteristics are due to the volume of each chamber, to the size of the apertures from the chambers to the central duct of the suppressor, and optionally due to spacers which are inserted into at least one aperture of the chambers to alter the effective open area of that aperture. Such spacers may also be used in which the noise suppressor is not modular. Where modular portions are used, it is preferable that each chamber is bounded by parts of two modular portions. A wall of one modular portion may then close the chamber in another modular portion, making the manufacture of the modular portions easier. Also disclosed is the use of a mass acting as a damper, which may be a noise suppressor as previously discussed, within a hose. The mass is connected to the hose by resilient means, e.g. electrometric material.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2002Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Assignee: Avon Polymer Products LimitedInventors: David Boast, Donald Milne Turner

Once the insert has been introduced into the muffler by sliding the tube along the core, the tube is then withdrawn leaving the insert behind in the muffler. Removal of the tube allows the filling to relax towards its intended density. The first subsequent exposure to hot exhaust gases causes certain portions of the insert to degrade, allowing further relaxation of the filling to assume its intended density. Further, the tube precludes potential damage to the insert during its introduction into the muffler.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2000Date of Patent: July 1, 2003Assignee: Race Tools, Inc.Inventors: Morgan M. Patent number: 6543577Abstract: A silencer (10) includes a polymeric casing (12) spaced from at least one inlet pipe and at least one outlet pipe by polymeric spacers (52). The polymeric spacers are made from a different material to that of the polymeric casing. The polymeric spacers are heat-resistant and have a higher melting point than the polymeric casing. The polymeric spacers are made of a softer material than the polymeric casing, and the polymeric spacers are capable of being deformed to accommodate irregularities in the shape of the inlet and outlet pipes.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2000Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Inventors: Stephanus Ferreira, Bevan John Davis

Patent number: 6457551Abstract: A replaceable muffler structure with an adjustable length includes a muffler, a tail pipe having a rear end provided with an insertion section movably mounted in a rear end of the muffler, and a positioning ring mounted on the rear end of the muffler for locking the insertion section of the rear end of the tail pipe. The rear end of the muffler has an air outlet provided with an annular flange for receiving the insertion section of the rear end of the tail pipe. The positioning ring is provided with a fitting portion fitted on the annular flange of the muffler and defines a plurality of screw holes. A plurality of bolts are each screwed into a corresponding one of the screw holes, and each urged on an outer periphery of the insertion section of the rear end of the tail pipe. A plurality of nuts are each screwed on a corresponding one of the bolts.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: Liang Fei Industry Co., Ltd.Inventor: Ming-Tien Chang

Patent number: 6438949Abstract: Heat shielding panels are attached to exhaust pipes and a silencer by using small set springs and large set springs. Distortion on a heat shielded panel, which would be caused when attaching a heat shielding panel through welding, is not caused. A process for positioning a bracket, which would be required when welding a bracket to an exhaust pipe, can be omitted. Moreover, as no bolt and nut is used, the number of parts can be reduced. As a result, productivity can be improved and an increase in the cost can be suppressed.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2000Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Naoki Nozaki

Patent number: 6405827Abstract: A lock seam for joining a first edge of material to a second edge of material is described. The first edge is wrapped in a first curl such that the first curl is substantially circular in shape. The second edge is wrapped in a second curl which is also substantially circular in shape. The inside surface of the first curl is wrapped about the outer surface of the second curl. The lock seam formed by this manner is particularly advantageous for muffler assembly.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2000Date of Patent: June 18, 2002Assignee: Tenneco Automotive Operating Company Inc.Inventor: Russell Edward Church

Patent number: 6345687Abstract: An end (29) of a tube (25) is closed off by a disk (31) which is locked in position in a joint formed with a collar (27) and a plate surround (28). The collar (27) includes a flange (26) which is secured against the lower face of the plate surround (28). The flange (26) may include ribs which act as torsion resistance ribs enhancing the engagement with the plate surround (28). In another embodiment, the collar (27) forms a tube end joint but not a closure.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2000Date of Patent: February 12, 2002Inventor: Denis Thorpe
