  • Patent number: 5348118
Abstract: A method and apparatus for installing communications cable and splices in the cable. The method involves suspending the cable from poles so that a cable to be spliced terminates adjacent a desired pole in a loop of a length insufficient to reach the ground. A work platform assembly is installed on the pole in a position spaced from the platform and is leveled. A worker is suspended adjacent to the work platform on a support independent of the work platform. From the independent support a splicing device is mounted on the work platform, an end of the looped cable is organized in the splicing tool, the end of a second, third or fourth cable is organized in the splicing tool and the splice formed, all from the independent support. The support, worker, and work platform are then removed. The pole supported platform includes a planar work surface supported in an adjustable spaced relationship to the pole.

The unit includes flexible support cords for support of the seat and to provide at least partial back support for the user when he is in a seated position. In order to position himself in the tree, tree steps are described but these climbing aids do not form a portion of the invention.

Abstract: Apparatus for climbing a tree has two frames, each frame having a rigid base portion with a flexible adjustable tree encircling band mounted thereon. A turnbuckle is connected to ends of each band for drawing together and separating the ends so as to change the effective length of the band. The rigid base portions of each frame have tree gripping edges which together with the bands and resiliently biased braces acts to secure each frame to the tree. Adjustment of the turnbuckles changes the attitude of the base relative to the ground. One of the frames is positioned above the other on the tree and they are alternatively raised up the tree or lowered down the tree. The upper frame includes a seat which hangs from the rigid base and is slidable, vertically adjustable and pivotable relative to the base. The lower frame has a platform upon which the feet of a user may rest while standing or seated on the seat.

Abstract: An anti-rotational outdoor shelf (1) where an unobstructed surfaces (3) is supported from below. Multi-dimensional stability is provided by legs (4) angled with respect to a central axis (C--C) to transform load forces into stabilizing forces. Undesirable tipping, rotation, and revolution about a support member are addressed. A gap between surfaces (3) and the natural support, such as a tree, together with smooth legs (4) allows vertical sliding to avoid the need for tight attachment. The design compacts when not temporarily installed through slidable connections.

The apparatus includes a base to support the hunter, and a protective canopy positioned to at least partially cover the base. A first pulley is secured at a fixed distance from a support member (such as a tree branch), and a second pulley is secured at a fixed distance from the base. A rope passes through each of the pulleys with a first end of the rope secured such that a hunter positioned on the base can raise the base toward the support member by pulling a second end of the rope. In the preferred embodiments a third pulley is positioned at a fixed distance from the support member, with the rope also passing through the third pulley. The first pulley can be suspended from the support member by a second rope.

Abstract: A tree stand assembly includes a horizontal platform and floor to be supported on a tree trunk by a pair of vertical stabilizing bars and a pair of compression struts running from a front edge portion of the platform to a lower end of each of the stabilizing bars. To fasten this platform to a tree trunk, a link chain is fastened at the top of one of the vertical bars and extends around the tree to the other vertical bar where a pivotally mounted latch hook extends through an appropriate link on the chain. The latch hook is rotated away from the tree trunk by a latch lever to tension the chain and hold the platform in place. A latch plate keeps the latch hook in place. A seat assembly is then mounted on the platform. Shoulder straps are provided on the platform, and the seat assembly can be placed in parallel relationship with respect to the platform floor, and the entire tree stand assembly can be carried as a back pack.
