Patent number: 4753012Abstract: A braking arrangement for a motor-driven chain saw is disclosed. The braking arrangement is actuable by a releasing device and is held in the release position against a spring force by means of a latching device. The braking arrangement includes a brake band holding member to which a brake band is fastened. The brake band can be tightened around a clutch drum of the motor-driven chain saw by means of an ancillary chain brake device provided in addition to the chain brake device, so that the clutch drum is brought to an immediate stop. Patent number: 4662072Abstract: A chain saw is disclosed having a drive motor which drives the sprocket wheel of the saw chain via a transmission stage. The sprocket wheel rotates in the same direction as the drive shaft of the drive motor and drives the saw chain in such a manner that the portion thereof traversing the lower periphery of the cutter bar moves toward the housing of the chain saw. The saw chain is braked with a braking arrangement which develops a braking moment that causes the chain saw to develop a reaction moment that opposes the kickback moment occurring as a consequence of the kickback action. In this way, the angle through which the chain saw is deflected during kickback is reduced. In addition, a compact configuration of the motor housing of the chain saw is obtained wherein the braking arrangement is kept free of dirt and chips.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1985Date of Patent: May 5, 1987Assignee: Andreas StihlInventors: Dieter Wieland, Manfred Bortfeld, Walter Gernhard

Patent number: 4420885Abstract: A portable power tool includes a manually actuable safety lever and an inertial safety system for activating a brake of the tool to provide a more effective safety arrangement. A first spring applies the brake when the safety lever contacts the hand, wrist or arm of an operator during "kick-back" or like violent movement of the tool. A second spring is operable independently of the safety lever for also releasing the first spring. An inertia mass is displaceable effectively independently of the safety lever when the brake is in the inoperative condition. This inertia mass releases the second spring, so releasing the first spring and applying the brake, upon occurrence of "kick-back" or the like. Preferably, the second spring operates a hammer release mechanism for striking a locking lever releasably retaining the safety lever. A band brake of a chain saw or circular saw may particularly be operated in this manner.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1982Date of Patent: December 20, 1983Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventor: Giuseppe Todero

Patent number: 4386683Abstract: The brake uses a slow brake feature whereby a positioning member, such as a lever, is actuated directly via a first spring to cause braking in response to faults only on the weaving side as well as a fast or normal brake feature whereby the positioning member is able to transmit the braking force of a second spring to effect braking in response to faults on the weaving side or mechanical side. The second spring acts on the positioning member via an abutment which is moved against the positioning member upon release of the second spring. The second spring can be released via an electromagnet in response to a weaving fault on the weaving side or by a stop-motion rod in response to a mechanical fault.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1981Date of Patent: June 7, 1983Assignee: Sulzer Brothers LimitedInventor: Gerd Schmitz

Patent number: 4384637Abstract: A band brake assembly comprises a friction element (12) engageable with a rotatable member (10) and an input linkage assembly (30) controlling engagement of the friction element with the rotatable member. The input linkage assembly (30) is carried by a mounting bracket (32) and includes a first lever (34), a bearing assembly (38) and a second lever (40) engageable with an end plate (42) secured to the ends of the friction element (12). The end plate (42) carries pins (22, 24) secured to the friction element and extending into slots (52, 54) on the mounting bracket (32). The pins transfer braking torque to the mounting bracket (32) and are guided by the slots to provide a servo assist during braking.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1981Date of Patent: May 24, 1983Assignee: The Bendix CorporationInventor: Dean E. Patent number: 4359144Abstract: An external band brake control linkage includes a pair of anchor pins which are respectively connected to the opposite ends of a brake band. The linkage being operable between a normal released condition holding the anchor pins spaced apart so as to maintain the band disengaged from the brake drum and an operative condition wherein the anchor pins are moved together from the position they occupy when the linkage is in its released condition wherein the brake band is engaged with the brake drum. For the purpose of compensating brake band wear, the control linkage includes a link having a ratchet wheel-type adjusting nut threaded on a rod-like link thereof, the adjusting nut being advanced so as to change the spacing between the anchor pins. A paw or an adjusting nut operating lever is carried by a link of the control linkage and is operative in response to the link undergoing a predetermined movement, corresponding to brake band wear, to index the adjusting nut so as to compensate for wear.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1980Date of Patent: November 16, 1982Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: David L. Patent number: 4320963Abstract: An original feeding system having a rotary drum provided with sheet original hold-down claws for clamping the leading edge of the sheet original against the surface of the periphery of the rotary drum and with a control mechanism for keeping the claws in clamping engagement with the sheet and releasing the claws from clamping engaging therewith. A belt drive is provided for feeding the copy sheet by holding same between the rotary drum and the belt. The rotary drum is adapted to be stopped in its rotation before it completes one revolution, while the belt drive continues to be driven to feed the sheet original, which is subjected to the frictional force exerted by the belt and slides along the surface of the rotary drum. Therefore, it is possible to feed a sheet original having a length larger than the circumferential length of the rotary drum.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1979Date of Patent: March 23, 1982Assignee: Ricoh Co., Ltd.Inventor: Toyokazu Satomi

Patent number: 4310972Abstract: A brake control assembly for a chain saw has an operating lever provided with a hub portion alongside a housing of the saw and a guard portion adjacent a handle carried by the housing. The hub portion is pivotally mounted on the housing allowing the lever to be moved fore and aft. A brake drum associated with the drive-transmitting mechanism of the saw is engaged by a brake band when the lever is swung to a brake-on position. The pivotal connection for the hub portion also supports an actuating plate for rocking movement independently of the hub portion. There is a drive connection between the operating lever and the actuating plate which rocks the plate on the pivotal connection when the lever is moved fore and aft. A torsion spring tends to rock the actuating plate in one direction and urge the brake band into braking engagement with the drum. The housing is fitted with a resilient latch which engages the cam finger to hold the brake band out of braking engagement with the drum.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1979Date of Patent: January 19, 1982Assignee: Trail Manufacturing LimitedInventors: Gary J.
