  • Patent number: 4286695
Abstract: An adjustment device for automatically adjusting clearance between components of a brake mechanism including a movable member operable by a vehicle operator to move a braking member from a clearance position into contact with a rotating member. The adjustment device includes a threaded shaft having a portion operatively coupled to a tubular member by means of a clutch. As wear occurs in the brake mechanism, the clutch permits relative movement between the threaded shaft and the tubular member in a first direction of movement of the movable member, and transmits movement therebetween in a second direction of movement of the movable member to cause rotation of the threaded shaft and maintain a constant clearance.

  • Patent number: 4220226
Abstract: A brake device for a friction press having a flywheel for driving a vertical threaded shaft, the flywheel being positioned between a pair of friction discs, the flywheel being driven in one direction or the other by the respective wheels. The brake device has a brake band generally in the shape of a circular arc which is engagable with the circumference of the flywheel at a position between the friction faces of the friction discs. The brake band is normally to be pressed by a tension spring against the circumference of the flywheel at all positions of the flywheel during its up and down movement, and a hydraulic device is provided which usually acts against the tension of the spring, to hold the brake band away from the flywheel but can apply the brake force instantaneously when necessary by ending the action of the hydraulic device.

  • Patent number: 4217974
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improvement in a band brake wherein a plurality of rotors and stators provide for braking a rotatable member when a friction lining on the band brake is engageable with the rotatable member. The rotatable member carries an axially extendible assembly which is engageable with the friction lining to provide for extension of the axially extendible assembly. When the assembly is extended, the rotors which rotate with the rotatable member and the stators which are carried by a support housing are moved axially into frictional engagement with each other. The extendible assembly comprises a first element carried by a key on the rotatable member to impart rotation with the rotatable member and permit axial movement relative to the rotatable member, and a second element resiliently connected to the first element.

  • Patent number: 4197927
Abstract: A band brake assembly includes a band which carries a friction lining for engagement with a rotatable member. A casing surrounds the band and a hydraulic actuator cooperates with a pair of links which are engaged with respective ends of the band. When the hydraulic actuator is operated, the hydraulic actuator is moved toward the rotatable member such that the pair of links are pivoted oppositely about the moving hydraulic actuator. The pivoting links are coupled to the band such that movement of the hydraulic actuator causes the band to contract the friction lining into engagement with the rotatable member. The pair of links are optionally provided with rollers which roll on the casing and the hydraulic actuator when the latter is operated. It is also possible to eliminate the casing so that the rollers roll on the band when the hydraulic actuator is operated.

  • Patent number: 4142732
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an improved hand truck having stair climbing capabilities of the general type employing a pair of star-like plates journaled on a main axle and carrying a plurality of stub axles on the projecting legs of the plate with each axle carrying a wheel to facilitate ascending or descending stairs. The type of truck in question operates so that one of the wheels will be in contact with the lands of two adjacent steps at all times to avoid jarring and to facilitate movement. The improvement disclosed includes the provision of braking means which will prevent "free-wheeling" of the plate so as to effectively slow up movement of the truck particularly when descending. The brake is operated from the handle end of the truck and releasably engages the main axle to either permit or prevent "free-wheeling" of the star-like plates to thereby selectively inhibit movement of the truck.

  • Patent number: 4121339
Abstract: A guard member is mounted on the chain saw for swinging movement between an actuate position and a reset position. The guard member occupies a normal position between the actuate and reset positions. A brake band is integral with a bowed column spring which applies the braking force to arrest movement of the cutting chain. A latching mechanism includes an arm with a latch pin engaged by a yieldable latch finger; this latch finger is integral with the bowed column spring. The guard member deflects the latch finger in response to movement of the guard to its actuate position; this action allows the column spring to apply the brake. The guard member is moved to its actuate position in response to a sudden movement of the chain saw, as in the case of "kickback"; this movement of the guard member is brought about by inertia or the engagement of the guard with the operator's body (most likely the wrist or the back of his hand) during this abrupt movement of the chain saw.
