Patent number: 10323696Abstract: Disclosed are latching mechanisms for engine disconnect devices, methods for making and for using such latching mechanisms, and motor vehicles with a disconnect device for coupling/decoupling an engine with a torque converter (TC). A disconnect clutch for selectively connecting an engine with a TC includes a pocket plate that movably mounts to the TC. The pocket plate includes pockets movably seating therein struts that engage notches in a notch plate to lock the pocket plate to the notch plate. A selector plate moves between deactivated and activated positions such that the struts shift into and out of engagement with the notch plate notches, respectively. An activation device is selectively actuable to move the selector plate between activated and deactivated positions. A latching mechanism automatically transitions to a latched state responsive to the selector plate being activated. When latched, this latching mechanism retains the selector plate in the activated position.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2017Date of Patent: June 18, 2019Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLC.Inventors: Farzad Samie, Derek F. Patent number: 9453542Abstract: Improvements in one way clutches include a first embodiment directed to a one way clutch having two sets of helical teeth arranged about the axis of rotation of a drive and driven member that translate axially into and out of engagement. The one way clutch is biased into engagement by a wave washer or similar device. As the speed of rotation of the clutch increases, hydraulic fluid which is directed axially against the drive member by a dam urges the drive member away from the driven member and opens the clutch. In a second embodiment, a pair of one way clutches having oppositely arranged sets of helical teeth selectively provide one way or overrunning operation in both directions. In this embodiment, each of the drive members may be selectively engaged with the driven member by a hydraulic piston. Respective return springs bias the pistons and drive members toward disengaged positions.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2012Date of Patent: September 27, 2016Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations, LLCInventor: Robert Alan Dziurda

Patent number: 8051959Abstract: An overrunning coupling assembly includes a control element mounted for controlled shifting movement between coupling faces of annular coupling members relative to a first set of pockets in the first member. The control element is operable for controlling position of only reverse struts in the first set of pockets without controlling the position of forward struts in a second set of pockets in the coupling face of the second member. The control element allows at least one of the reverse struts to engage at least one of a set of locking formations on the coupling face of the second coupling member in a first position of the control element. The control element maintains the reverse struts in their pockets in a second position of the control element.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2008Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: Means Industries, Inc.Inventor: Gregory M. Patent number: 7721860Abstract: There is provided a power coupling device comprising first and second coupling members, at least one of which is capable of rotating about a common axis and relative to each other. The first coupling member has a pocket, and the second coupling member has notches. The power coupling member also comprises first and second struts arranged at least partly in the pocket. Each of the first and second struts is urged to emerge from the pocket and capable of engaging with one of the notches. The first strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a first direction, and the second strut is capable of transmitting torque between the first and second coupling members only in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2007Date of Patent: May 25, 2010Assignee: Mazda Motor CorporationInventor: Tokimori Saka

Patent number: 6994195Abstract: A clutch mechanism connects a rotating shaft to an outer clutch member having a clutch keyway. The clutch mechanism permits the shaft to rotate in a normal direction and prevents the shaft from rotating in a reverse direction when the outer clutch member is rotationally fixed to the housing. A key is moveable into an engaged position with the clutch keyway to rotationally fix the outer clutch member to the housing. The key is also moveable into a disengaged position to permit the outer clutch member to rotate relative to the housing. Thus, the shaft is permitted to rotate in both the normal direction and the reverse direction. A positive, mechanical and/or visual indication of whether the shaft is capable of operating in both directions may also be included. The assembly may include a sealed interior space in common with the machine including the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 2004Date of Patent: February 7, 2006Assignee: Emerson Power Transmission Manufacturing, L.P.Inventors: Michael Wayne Brace, Michael Hill

Patent number: 6290044Abstract: A selectable one-way clutch assembly for use in an automatic transmission comprises a strut plate rotatable about a central hub and having pockets and struts mounted therein for pivotable rotation. A selecting plate concentrically located about an activator hub has teeth extending axially inboard and configured to fit in the apertures in an activator plate. A turning device is selectively operable to activate one-way clutching mode by rotating the pin of a control plate to disengage selecting cams and displace selecting plate teeth inboard beyond the inboard face of the activator plate wherein the struts catch the teeth when the strut plate assembly is rotated in a clutching direction. The catching ends of the struts are cammed in the pockets by ramped camming ends of the teeth when the strut plate assembly is rotated in the opposing direction, thereby allowing freewheeling of the strut plate in the overrun direction.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2000Date of Patent: September 18, 2001Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Boris Iosifovich Burgman, Dwayne Paul Joppeck, John William Kimes
