Patent number: 8636123Abstract: Luggage cases of the soft-side construction are perceived to be lighter than hard-side cases. However, many rigidifying elements in soft-side cases tend to add to the weight of a soft-side luggage case. This reduces its weight advantage over molded shell luggage cases. Using a textile body in the luggage case to form both the grip of a carry handle and a portion of the outer surface of the luggage helps reduce the weight of the luggage. The textile body may be attached to a thin resilient wire hoop to resist distortion of the luggage case when is it lifted by the handle. This construction saves weight in comparison to conventional luggage case constructions.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2010Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: Samsonite IP Holdings S.a.r.l.Inventors: Dirk Santy, Joris Smeuninx, George Teixeira, Kenzo Yoneno

In a preferred embodiment, the self-supporting soft walled carriers are also selectively collapsible along defined fold lines for self contained compressed storage.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1990Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: SGI Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey M. Patent number: 5083645Abstract: A luggage case including a rectangular shell of relatively flexible material having a back, front, top, bottom and ends, with the front having a closable opening therein; a reinforcing strip which extends along the top and partially down each of the side for providing structural support to the shell to maintain the rectangular shape thereof; and a pair of support rods respectively secured to the sides, each of the support rods having a substantially rectangular shape corresponding to the shape of the perimeter of each of the sides, and being secured thereto. In this manner, when a force is exerted on the sides, the sides may flex in the direction of the force, and when the force is removed, the sides will resume their initial position due to the elastic restoring force of the support rods. Both the reinforcing strip and the support rods are disposed on the inside surfaces of the luggage case.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1990Date of Patent: January 28, 1992Assignee: Skyway Luggage CompanyInventor: Doo Y. Patent number: 4966260Abstract: A travel bag has a plurality of internal compartments and can be reformed to provide different configurations for those compartments. In one configuration, four compartments are arranged side-by-side, with the pairs of compartments being mirror images of one another. The inner compartments enclose cavities which are pointed at their upper and bottom ends, while the outer compartments are expanded to have a rectangular cross-sectional configuration. Dart-like seams formed at corners of the outer expanded compartments maintain the rectangular cross-sectional configuration. The opposing compartment pairs are joined together by upper and lower wall portions forming a hinged connection therebetween. A first sliding fastener provides access to both inner compartments, while second and third sliding fasteners provide access to respective outer compartments. The three sliding fasteners are arranged parallel to each other so as to be upwardly facing.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1989Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: Amity Leather Products Co.Inventor: Raymond W. Patent number: 4817769Abstract: The invention relates to a novel covered zipper assembly for the top of a portfolio with two heavy duty magnetic catches, one at each end thereof and being secured between the portfolio panels at the top to hide the zipper from view. A combination lock cooperating with a hasp protrudes from one end to be inserted into a catch portion at the side of the portfolio whereby the pull tab of the zipper can be grasped to slide open the top of the portfolio. Lock means, preferably combination lock means, are provided at the hasp. The covering is preferably constructed of high grade leather which is fastened by sewing to the other side panels of the portfolio at the top inner edges thereof. Easy access to the top of the portfolio for opening is not readily suggested by observing from the top because the cover assembly hides the zipper from view.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Inventor: Frank Saliba
