  • Patent number: 5522487
Abstract: An article of soft luggage, preferably a folding garment bag, has a soft shell forming outer walls, with wheels on the outer bottom wall and a flange and pocket engagement that fixes the bottom walls together when the bag is folded. The bottom wall is partitioned into left and right portions due to folding over of the ends of the bag, which has an inverted U-shape when closed and resting on the wheels. To stiffen the bottom walls of the left and right portions, and provide a mounting for the wheels, relatively stiffer gussets are affixed to the left and right cooperative portions, respectively. The two cooperative portions are connected by a flexible closure such as a zipper when the bag is closed. The zipper or the like defines a flexible seam that normally would permit the cooperative portions to be displaced relative to one another, for example rotating around the longitudinal axis of the zipper, interfering with positioning of the wheels mounted on each cooperative portion.

  • Patent number: 5396974
Abstract: Luggage cases, especially if they are large and bulky, usually have wheels and glides or legs to hold the case upright when loaded and permit the case to be pulled or wheeled. These same large cases present a large volume--an advantage when actually being used to carry clothing. However, this large volume is a disadvantage during packaging, storage and shipping after manufacture, such as between the factory and the store where it is sold. This large volume is a disadvantage also when the case is being stored by the owner between trips. Shown here is a case (10) with easily removable wheels (11) and feet (13). These external fittings attach to the outside of the luggage shell and have a projection (92) which extends to an aperture (90) in the wall of the case shell to the inside of the case. A manually releasable latch (96), such as a clip, engages and disengages this projection from the inside of the case to mount the wheel and leg to the outside of the case.

A pull handle is encased in a rectangular plastic housing with its hand grip portion protruding out. The housing is intended to be screwed to the top side of a suitcase. The pull handle is a rectangular cross-section rod with a hand grip at one end and two pins protruding 90 degrees to its axis at its other end. The housing cover includes a channel, allowing the pull handle rod to slide longitudinally inside the housing. A manually adjustable bridge stop is located about midway along the housing length, so that the pull handle may be used with only half its length extended, providing a rigid handle for pulling a suitcase. The pull handle can also be used fully extended and pivoted on the end of the housing at any comfortable angle for pulling a suitcase.

  • Patent number: 5339934
Abstract: A luggage steering device is formed of a hollow sleeve carried on a front wall or side of a typically wheeled article of luggage. Within the sleeve is coaxially positioned a hollow tube capable of axial rotation within and relative to the sleeve. A rigid steering rod is mounted for longitudinally-slidable coaxial insertion into and extraction from the tube. Hingedly connected to the rigid rod is an anchor which remains captively within and in predetermined axial registration with the tube while the rigid rod and hinge portion are extracted from the tube. The pivotal connection allows the rigid steering rod to be pivotally displaced upwardly and downwardly in a substantially vertical plane. The axial registration of the steering rod anchor to the swiveling inner tube assures that, in addition to vertically pivotal movement, the steering rod may be radially swiveled or rotated about a substantially horizontal plane by virtue of a mechanical connection between the anchor and the inner tube.
