  • Patent number: 6099430
Abstract: A clutched actuator for use in a transfer case is disclosed which may be used in conjunction with electronic traction control systems and anti-lock braking systems where the clutched actuator system is required to quickly disengage the four-wheel drive of the vehicle. The clutched actuator is operably coupled to the transfer case of the vehicle drive system through a sector plate. The clutched actuator includes a worm drive motor assembly providing the base driving mechanism, a clutching mechanism, and a gear reduction mechanism for reducing the torque capacity required of the clutch mechanism. When the clutching mechanism is engaged, power is transmitted from the worm drive through the gear reduction mechanism to the output shaft to selectively engage the mode of operation of the transfer case, i.e., two-wheel or four-wheel drive mode, and the drive torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. The worm gear is non-backdrivable such that the motor need not provide a holding torque.

  • Patent number: 5119918
Abstract: Energization of an electric coil produces flux for attracting an armature of a clutch into engagement with a rotor in order to couple an input shaft to an output pulley. When the coil is de-energized, two angularly spaced permanent magnets pull the armature away from the rotor and into engagement with fixed pole pieces which cause a braking torque to be applied to the output pulley. The magnets are located closely adjacent one another and only along a short arc of the armature in order to enable the flux of the coil to overcome the flux of the magnets and effect easy release of the brake and engagement of the clutch when the coil is energized.

Abstract: A clutch and brake control circuit includes first and second relays connected to an interlock circuit and to the brake and clutch coils on a vehicle. The relays are interconnected with the coils so that the clutch coil cannot be energized unless the brake coil circuit is complete. Preferably, the brake coil circuit includes a delay timer for assuring that the brake is energized for a preselected time period after the clutch coil is deenergized. The circuit is constructed such that if the clutch coil is reenergized during the time period, power to the brake coil is interrupted and the clutch coil turns on immediately without delay. Any time after the clutch coil is deenergized, a clutch switch connected to the interlock circuit and the relays must be actuated before the clutch will engage. The interlock circuit, which may include such elements as transmission, parking brake and seat switches, is fully integrated with the brake and clutch control.

  • Patent number: 4807727
Abstract: Method and apparatus for securing an electric brake/clutch (14) against rotation relative to a stationary member (10). A preferred system includes an anti-rotation lever (26) attached to and extending from a brake/clutch housing (16). Anti-rotation lever (26) includes a flange (32) at its free end. Flange (32) is situated between a pair of spaced opposed rubber bumpers (34) attached to stationary member (10). Thus, torque applied to the housing (16) of brake/clutch (14) is transmitted through anti-rotation lever (26), rubber bumper (34), and ultimately to stationary member (10). The distance between rubber bumpers (34) exceeds the thickness of flange (32), whereby anti-rotation lever (26) and housing (16) can radially float relative to stationary member (10), thereby permitting "runout" of brake/clutch assembly (14).

  • Patent number: 4734604
Abstract: A friction braking system located entirely inside an induction motor of an appliance quickly stops rotation of the rotor in the appliance motor, for example such as a food processor, whenever the A.C. electrical power is turned off. Thus, rotation of any tool being operated in the appliance is quickly stopped, whenever the electrical power is interrupted. The rotor in the induction motor is axially slidably mounted on the motor shaft and is keyed to the shaft for permitting axial shifting displacement of the rotor relative to the stator while preventing any angular displacement of the rotor relative to the shaft. Consequently, the rotor and shaft always turn and stop as a function unit. A friction brake lining is affixed within the motor housing offset from the axis of the motor shaft as far as practicable. A disc brake mounted onto the rotor has an annular friction braking surface positioned for engagement against the brake lining.

  • Patent number: 4040508
Abstract: A control circuit for controlling the shaft speed of a motor having clutch and brake devices comprises a speed detector for detecting the actual rotating speed of the motor and generating a first pulse signal having a period in inverse proportion to the actual rotating speed, a speed selector for setting the desired-speed of the shaft, a signal generator for generating a second pulse signal having a period in inverse proportion to the desired-speed from the speed selector, a first means for detecting the ratio of the period of the first signal to the period of the second signal, and a second means for controlling the operation of the clutch and brake devices in response to the detected ratio.

  • Patent number: 4023659
Abstract: A control system is disclosed for providing a dual voltage electrical power supply for a variable load such as an electro-mechanical clutch-brake power transmitter of the type used for instance for a loom transmitter. A control arrangement is disclosed in which high voltage is continuously available under control of low voltage timing and drive circuits.

  • Patent number: 4022307
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for driving a transfer beam for handling relatively heavy loads, comprising in the case of a beam having a rack rigidly associated therewith. Said device consists essentially of a transmission incorporating between the driving motor and the pinion in meshing engagement with the rack a clutch and a brake both controlled by electromagnetic means, servo means for supplying electric current to each electromagnetic control of said clutch and brake, and a pair of servo-generators adapted to monitor the one the acceleration phase of the transfer beam from the standstill position of said beam and the other the deceleration phase before stopping the beam.

  • Patent number: 3945476
Abstract: A stator is mounted in a housing, and a rotor is rotatable with reference to the stator and rotates with a motor shaft. A flywheel is mounted on and rotatable with the motor shaft. An output shaft is separate from the motor shaft and a stationary member is mounted in the housing and surrounds the output shaft with clearance. A coupling plate and a braking plate are both mounted on the output shaft for rotation therewith, being located axially adjacent the flywheel and the stationary member, respectively. A first electromagnet is associated with the coupling plate and when energized causes frictional engagement of the latter with the flywheel so that the coupling plate and thereby the output shaft are entrained in rotation by the flywheel. A second electromagnet is associated with the braking plate and when energized causes frictional engagement thereof with the stationary member so that the braking plate and the output shaft are braked by frictional engagement therewith.
