Ball Or Roller Patents (Class 192/38)
  • Patent number: 7350632
Abstract: The present invention provides clutch systems for the control of the transmission of torque to the front (or rear) wheels of a vehicle (e.g., an ATV), thus being operable to change the vehicle from a two-wheel, rear-drive (or front-drive) vehicle to a four wheel drive vehicle by engaging the clutch systems thereof. The clutch system is contained within an extended portion of a housing that also contains a differential system, thus eliminating the need for fastening a separate clutch system housing to the differential housing. The clutch system is actuated by energizing a coil which in turn causes tab members of an actuation disk to disengage from notches formed on an inner race, allowing the actuation of a roller clutch system. When the coil is de-energized, the actuation disk engages the inner race and prevents inadvertent or undesired actuation of the clutch system.

Abstract: A wedge loading mechanism for an eccentric planetary traction drive in which a roller having a flexibly mounted shaft is positioned between two raceways forming a convergent wedge. Rotation of either of the two raceways wedges the roller within the convergent wedge squeezing the roller between the two raceways thereby transmitting rotational motion and torque between the two raceways. The flexibly mounted shaft generates differences between an effective supporting stiffness of the roller and an contact effective stiffness at the points where the roller contacts the two raceways. The difference in the effective stiffness allow the roller to operate efficiently at smaller convergent wedge angles.

Abstract: A power transmission mechanism for a vehicle includes a clutch assembly which includes a two-way clutch and an electromagnetic clutch. The two-way clutch includes three rows of rollers retained by a retainer and disposed between a clutch inner member, which is actually a stem of a constant-velocity joint mounted on the outboard end of a drive axle, and a clutch outer member, which is actually a hub ring of a hub bearing supporting a vehicle wheel. Simply by energizing and deenergizing the electromagnet of the electromagnetic clutch, the two-way clutch can be engaged and disengaged. Since the rollers are arranged in three rows, it is possible to increase the contact area between the rollers and the clutch inner and outer members and thus the maximum torque that can be transmitted through the rollers without the need to increase the number of rollers in each row or their length or diameter.

Abstract: A controllable, multi-mode, bi-directional overrunning clutch assembly and a shift system are adapted for use in a power transmission device. The clutch assembly includes a first ring journalled on a first rotary member, a second ring fixed to a second rotary member, and a plurality of rollers disposed in opposed cam tracks formed between the first and second rings. The first ring is split to define an actuation channel having a pair of spaced end segments. An actuator ring is moveable between positions engaged with and released from the end segments of the first ring. • Patent number: 6766888
Abstract: A rotation transmission device is provided which is used to selectively transmit power. The aim is to stabilize the frictional torque when the rotor of an electromagnet absorbs an armature. A retainer is mounted between an inner member and an outer member, and is formed with a plurality of pockets, and engaging elements are mounted in the pockets. An armature is mounted so as to be nonrotatable but axially movable relative to the retainer, and a rotor is mounted to the inner member or the outer member so as to axially oppose the armature. An electromagnet attracts the armature to the rotor, thereby changing the phase of the retainer to bring the engaging elements into engagement with the outer periphery of the inner member and the inner periphery of the outer member, and thereby transmitting a turning torque between the inner member and the outer member. When the armature is attracted to the rotor, the large-diameter portion of the armature is attracted to the rotor.

Abstract: A rotatable shaft of a motor main body and a worm shaft of a speed reducing unit are drivingly coupled to each other by a clutch. Surrounding walls, which are arranged radially outward of the clutch to substantially entirely surround the clutch in an imaginary plane that extends substantially perpendicular to the axis of the worm shaft, are formed integrally with a gear housing. Thus, the surrounding walls restrain outward movement of grease, which is applied to predetermined portions of the clutch, so that effluence of the grease from the clutch is restrained.

Abstract: A power transmission device is proposed which makes it easy to start on a slope. A control type slip clutch and a mechanical type control type two-way clutch are mounted between an input shaft to which the rotation of an engine is transmitted and an output shaft mounted around the input shaft. The input shaft and the output shaft are engaged together by the slip clutch while producing slip, and thereafter the two-way clutch is engaged. This improves transmission efficiency. A one-way clutch is provided between the output shaft and a housing provided around the output shaft. In a stopped state on an upward slope, when depressing of the brake pedal is released and rotation in the reverse direction to the revolving direction of the engine is transmitted to the output shaft from the vehicle wheel side, the output shaft is locked by the operation of the one-way clutch, thereby preventing the vehicle from moving in the opposite direction to the moving direction.

One of the inner and outer race includes a plurality of cam surfaces, and one of the inner and outer races is tapered toward a first end of the clutch. A plurality of tapered rolling elements are positioned between the races along the cam surfaces such that the rolling elements wedge between the inner and outer races to prevent relative rotation. An axially moveable retainer interconnects the rolling elements and is biased toward the first end of the clutch, wherein each of the rolling elements wedge between the inner and outer races. An actuator selectively moves the retainer axially away from the first end such that the tapered rolling elements no longer wedge between the inner and outer races, thereby allowing relative rotational movement.

Abstract: It is already common in many devices like spanners or pipe wrenches for the pressure between the gripping faces and gripped faces to be related to the torsional load that is applied to turn the gripped object. In these apparatus the grip can be made to relax automatically as the load is removed. The invention relates to improvements in such devices, and to novel designs of mechanical coupling devices that utilise this basic idea. More specifically, the invention firstly proposes a method of improving the performance of an object-gripping tool of the cam-operated gripper-element type, in which method there is applied to the gripper surface a friction-enhancing chemical.

  • Patent number: 6672442
Abstract: A clutch mechanism is provided between a driving rotor and a driven rotor. The clutch mechanism selects from a state for transmitting rotational force and a state for discontinuing the transmission of rotational force. The holder permits the rolling. A holder supports rolling bodies such that the rolling bodies are switched between a transmitting position and a disconnecting position. When held at the transmitting position, the rolling bodies are engaged with both of the driving rotor and the driven rotor so that rotational force of the driving rotor is transmitted to the driven rotor. When held at the disconnecting position, the rolling bodies are disengaged from the driving rotor so that the transmission of rotational force from the driven rotor to the driving rotor is discontinued. When external rotational force is applied to the driven rotor, the holder sets the rolling bodies to the disconnecting position.
