When the first dog ring and the second dog ring are moved away from each other, bias force produced by the springs is applied to the second dog ring in a direction to draw the second dog ring toward the first dog ring. Accordingly, when the first dog ring is moved away from the second dog ring during shifting, the second dog ring is drawn toward the first dog ring under the bias force, and third engaging teeth of the second dog ring and meshing teeth of a first-speed gear are promptly disengaged from each other.

    Abstract: A clutch and gear synchronizer module includes an actuator disposed radially with respect to the transmission shaft and carried by an actuator carrier connected to the transmission shaft for rotation with the transmission shaft. The actuator includes an offset pin coupled to a shift sleeve that is able to move axially with respect to the transmission shaft thereby causing axial and rotational movement of the offset pin and rotation of the actuator about an actuator axis. The actuator includes a lobe and a pawl. Sequentially, the lobe engages a friction ring thereby causing the friction ring to engage the gear and causing the gear to rotate in synchronization with the transmission shaft. As the shift sleeve moves further towards the gear, the pawl then engages clutch teeth disposed on an annular surface of the gear.

    Abstract: A strut-type synchronizer for coupling a gear to a rotating shaft includes a hub rotating with the shaft, a clutch ring rotatable with the gear, and a friction ring disposed between the hub and the clutch ring. The friction ring, which does not itself directly engage the sleeve, has a friction surface that is thus urged by the struts into engagement with a complementary friction surface of the clutch ring, whereupon relative rotation between the friction ring and the clutch ring ceases, the detent is overcome, and the sleeve's spline teeth engage complementary spline teeth on the clutch ring to fully engage the synchronizer. The friction surfaces include two axially-spaced frustoconical portions, by which an increased cone torque is achieved during synchronization.

    Abstract: A manual automobile transmission includes a non-rotating reverse gear having an internal spline in the front portion of the reverse gear and a needle roller bearing mounted at the rear portion. The bearing supports the gear and allows the main shaft to rotate without the gear turning when the transmission is not in the reverse mode. A separate splined collar is mounted on the shaft. Internal splines on the collar readily engage the splines on the main shaft and extended splines match the reverse gear splines. A small spring ball is inserted in the gear just forward of the splines to facilitate alignment of the gear and splined collar.
