  • Patent number: 5940161
Abstract: A method for mounting safety shields onto eyeglass temples and a kit for carrying out that method. A temple of an eyeglass frame is placed in a channel forming part of a side shield thereafter, a screw is inserted into an opening formed in the side shield and into a member affixed to the temple to create a fastened fit between the temple and the channel which attaches the side shield to the temple. The side shield is placed in its operative position before the screw is inserted into the opening and the fastened fit results from the insertion of the screw into the opening and member which holds the side shield in its operative position. The kit includes a side shield having a longitudinally extending channel into which a longitudinally extending eyeglass temple may be inserted. The channel has an open lateral end through which the temple may be inserted and a supporting lateral end against which the temple may be supported.

  • Patent number: 5877837
Abstract: An opthalmic shading device depends from a structure worn on the head and provides a shading structure which may be mounted between a source of light to be attenuated and the human eye. A shading structure is attached to a flexible rod which depends from a mounting bracket which is attached to another structure supported by the head, preferably to head wear or to an eye wear frame's temple member. The flexible rod enables the user to adjust the position and angle of the shading structure to interpose it between the user's eye and the light source to be blocked or attenuated. One of the shading structures may be larger than the other, especially where one light source to be blocked presents a larger area of projection than the other. In one embodiment, the shading assemblies depend from a top frame including a brow span and hinged temple arms with lower structures being excised, the top frame fittable on top of conventional eye wear with the shading structure movable to its operable position.

Abstract: A pair of non-prescription eyeglasses is mounted on a cantilevered support by a hanger that includes an element constructed of relatively stiff resilient plastic material. Such element includes a relatively wide main section having an aperture which receives the support arm, and a relatively narrow extension. The latter passes through the nose gap of the eyeglasses and is reversely bent to form a loop that surrounds the eyeglass frame bridge. In a first embodiment of this invention a rivet maintains the loop closed and prevents casual removal of the hanger from the eyeglasses. In a second embodiment a snap-type device holds the loop closed. This snap-type closure cannot be opened casually, at least for the first opening thereof.

Abstract: Protective eyewear is disclosed which comprises a sheet of transparent synthetic plastics material with means for attaching to the wearer's head with a viewing area of said sheet extending across the wearer's eyes. A protrusion extends along the top edge of the sheet, contacts the wearer's forehead in use and holds the viewing area away from the wearer's eyes. Slits are provided in the sheet to improve ventilation and the plastics material is coated with anti-fogging material to prevent misting-up. The slits also make it possible to use the protective eyewear over spectacles.

  • Patent number: 4953231
Abstract: A shade attachment for eyeglasses includes a frame defining a pair of openings dimensioned for registry with lenses of a pair of conventional eyeglasses. Top and bottom resilient clips are provided on the frame and are configured for frictional engagement with top and bottom edges of eyeglass lenses. A set of transverse slats are mounted on the frame and extend across the lens openings. The salts are mounted for movement between open and closed positions by a linear drive train including a plurality of driven gears secured to axle shafts of each of the slats. A plurality of idler gears are mounted for rotation on the frame between and in mesh with each adjacent pair of driven gears. A drive gear is mounted for rotation on the frame and in mesh with one of the driven gears. A control knob is provided for manually rotating the drive gear to simultaneously open or close all of the slats extending across one of the frame openings.

  • Patent number: 4945573
Abstract: A mask to protect physicians, dentists and technicians from spatter from patients afflicted with various diseases (including A.I.D.S.) is assembled from two parts, which may be shipped and stored flat. The visor is formed of a flat piece of sheet rubber formed with transverse slits so that the visor may be attached to ordinary eyeglasses. The shape of the visor provides a curved, forward extending bill. Slits are formed near the outer edge of the visor. A transparent shield has dovetail projections on its upper edge which snap through the slits. Other cooperating fastening means may be used to assemble the visor and shield and also to hold the visor on eyeglasses. The shield is supported by the visor and hangs down to about the chin, protecting the eyes, nose and mouth.
