  • Patent number: 5293649
Abstract: In prior art face guard mounting technology, the guard is attached to the helmet by four attachment straps. This invention pertains to improving the way that the guard is mounted to only the sides of the helmet. Each prior art side attachment strap is in the form of a single loop that encircles the rear most bar of the guard. The prior art design holds the guard to the helmet restricting the guard from moving only in the direction that the side attachment strap points in. However, the prior art side attachment has no means of restricting the guard from moving down through the loop in the side attachment strap, nor does it keep the guard from rattling, tilting or moving up and down on the helmet. The present invention side attachment strap provides a means of restricting the guard from getting moved around on the helmet. The improved side attachment strap eliminates the problems encountered by the prior art design by containing two loops, with a 90 degree angle between the loops.

  • Patent number: 5257417
Abstract: A transparent plastic face shield assembly for a fire fighter's helmet is disclosed which employs a thermally reflective applique on each of the end sections of a face shield near its points of pivotal attachment to opposite sides of the helmet. The appliques essentially cover the outer facing surfaces of the face shield end sections and contain a channel along lower edges thereof in which lower edge portions of the end sections are disposed in close fitting relation to prevent lower edges of the end sections from deforming when exposed to high temperature conditions. The appliques should be constructed of highly heat reflective aluminum alloy such as aluminum foil or sheet. The appliques are attached to the face shield end sections by a high temperature resistant adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5249347
Abstract: A wire mesh face mask for hockey or other sports is manufactured from a steel having carbon content in the range of AISI grades C-1018 to C-1038, and preferably C-1022. The mask is made by forming a grid of generally horizontal wires overlaid by generally vertical wires, shaping the grid into a mask shape, welding the wires to each other where they intersect, heat treating and quenching the grid to increase hardness, dipping the grid to coat it with an epoxy coating. This combination of materials and processes permits the use of a thinner wire than has previously been possible in face masks.
