  • Patent number: 8961743
Abstract: An improved rapid thermal conversion process for efficiently converting wood, other biomass materials, and other carbonaceous feedstock (including hydrocarbons) into high yields of valuable liquid product, e.g., bio-oil, on a large scale production, is disclosed. In the process, biomass material, e.g., wood, is fed to a conversion system where the biomass material is mixed with an upward stream of hot heat carriers, e.g., sand, that thermally convert the biomass into a hot vapor stream. The hot vapor stream is rapidly quenched with quench media in one or more condensing chambers located downstream of the conversion system. The rapid quenching condenses the vapor stream into liquid product, which is collected from the condensing chambers as a valuable liquid product.

  • Patent number: 8328992
Abstract: A retort involves a stack of retort units arranged to process coal or other raw material by heating the coal in a heating compartment and directing vapors emitted from the raw material into a vapor compartment surrounding the heating compartment. The heating compartment may include a plurality of louver units with embedded heating components. Each louver unit includes heating fins (a heat transfer medium) that delivers heat to the coal. Each louver unit also includes an insulation layer adjacent a vapor opening where vapors emitted from the coal pass into the vapor compartment. The vapors are directed to a distillation column where carbon based vapors, volatiles, fuel vapors and the like may be liquefied for transport to a refinery or directly refined into fuels. Further, a clean coal char (toxins and carbon vaporized) is delivered to a power generation plant to provide cleaner emissions relative to unprocessed coal.

  • Patent number: 7371308
Abstract: The invention describes a process and a plant for pyrolyzing hydrocarbon-containing waste products, in particular used tires or biowaste, in which the material to be pyrolyzed is introduced into a pyrolysis furnace and is pyrolyzed at 500° C. The significant factor is that the material is introduced as far as possible without being broken down, into a receiving device outside the furnace (1), which receiving device is introduced into the pyrolysis furnace, which is open at the bottom, from below, the device simultaneously closing the furnace (1) in a sealed manner. The significant advantage is that a plurality of different receiving devices for different materials can be provided, so that the pyrolysis plant can be used with a relatively quick changeover for different pyrolysis raw materials, without changeover measures on the furnace being required.

  • Patent number: 7087140
Abstract: A carbonizing waste processing apparatus is operable to rotate and heat a radiant tube for carbonizing waste therein so as to generate granular char and vapors from the waste, transfer waste into an upstream end of the tube, temporarily impede movement of the waste through the tube at upstream and downstream locations therein so as to ensure that residence time of the waste in the tube is sufficient at the upstream location to carry out evaporation of moisture from the waste and at the downstream location to elevate the temperature of any solids in the waste for completion of carbonization of the waste, discharge the granular char and vapors from the tube, and flow the generated and discharged vapors through a succession of finned heat exchanger tubes so as to condense and separate the vapors into oil, water and methanol.

  • Patent number: 5709779
Abstract: A device for conveying waste includes a waste feed chute. A stationary conveyor pipe is connected to the waste feed chute and has a sealed-off end and a housing with a nonround cross section defining a longitudinal direction. A screw conveyor is disposed in the longitudinal direction of the conveyor pipe. A motor drives the screw conveyor. A pyrolysis reactor into which the conveyor pipe discharges, defines a first space between the housing of the conveyor pipe and the pyrolysis reactor. The pyrolysis reactor has an inlet end and a longitudinal axis about which the pyrolysis reactor is rotatable. An inlet tube in which the sealed-off end of the conveyor pipe is disposed, defines a second space between the inlet tube and the conveyor pipe. The inlet tube communicates with the inlet end of the pyrolysis reactor and has a smaller cross section than the pyrolysis reactor. At least one supply line leads from outside into the pyrolysis reactor.
