  • Patent number: 9505983
Abstract: An adjustable chargehole closure for adjusting the closure cover of a charging hole in a coking oven chamber. The adjustable chargehole closure has as an inner frame for a closure cover, and the frame can be rotated both with respect to the closure cover and with respect to an outer frame, designed asymmetrically with respect to a vertical plane, so that the closure cover is displaced along a longitudinal axis when the inner frame is rotated in the horizontal plane. The position of the charging hole opening and the closure cover present therein on the ceiling of a coking oven chamber can thereby be changed without requiring construction measures on the ceiling of a coking oven chamber. The capability is in particular advantageous in order to match the position of the charging hole cover to the precise charging position of the charging machine.

  • Patent number: 7513977
Abstract: A drill stem guide and cover system is designed to guide a drill stem used in coke cutting operations. After a cutting tool and drill stem are inserted into a coke drum, covers close, forming a passageway small enough that it prevents the cutting tool on the end of the drill stem from being removed but large enough to allow movement of the drill stem. The drill stem moves within the passageway to allow the cutting tool to be raised and lowered as needed. The closed covers provide protection from the release of pressurized or explosive gases while the coke cutting operation is taking place. The covers can be automated so that an operator can control them from a safe distance, and the covers can be remotely opened for the removal of the drill stem and cutting tool when coke cutting operations are not taking place.

  • Patent number: 7285249
Abstract: An apparatus for the provision of a block flange of a manhole aperture or the like, in particular for fluidized bed reactors for the oxychlorination of ethylene, oxygen and HCl, having a wall flange fixed in the reactor wall, is intended to provide a solution whereby all other auxiliary measures can be dispensed with and the expense associated therewith can be eliminated without the functionality of the system suffering as a result and without undesirable deposits being formed in these areas. This is achieved in that the flange surface (5) pointing inward and downward in the direction of gravity is of beveled design, at least in some areas.

  • Patent number: 5417811
Abstract: A closure device adapted for attachment onto the upper head of a coking drum to prevent hot vapors escaping during drum decoking operations. The closure device includes a cylindrical-shaped housing having a rotatable ball valve and horizontal elongated stem provided in its lower portion, and a cover unit including a packing gland provided at the housing upper end. A rotatable cutting tool provided within the housing above the ball valve has a drive rod extending upwardly through the cover unit packing gland. During operations, the ball valve is opened and the drive rod and its attached cutting tool can be extended downwardly through the ball valve cylindrical-shaped opening into the coking drum and rotated, so as to cut and dislodge coke deposited in the drum.

  • Patent number: 5092963
Abstract: An automated top head cover and stem guide assembly adapted for covering a top opening in vertical vessels such as coking drums, and a method for remotely operating the assembly. The top head assembly includes a flanged connector unit attached pressure-tightly to a top flange opening of a coking drum, and a top cover device including a cover unit pivotally attached to the flanged connector unit, so that the top cover unit can be pivotally lifted and moved aside. A stem guide device is also pivotally attached to the flanged connector unit, so that a stem guide unit can be pivotally moved downwardly into place over the top flange unit opening, after a stem member is inserted into the vessel. Following coke removal from the drum, the stem member is withdrawn, the stem guide unit is pivotally moved upwardly, and the head cover unit is moved downwardly to cover the coking drum flanged connector unit. The invention also discloses method steps for operating the head cover and stem guide devices of the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4406619
Abstract: In a coke oven of the type having a plurality of filling shafts with openings and caps therefor at the oven roof, in order to reduce the temperature gradient and heat losses at the roof of the coke oven, the caps of the filling shafts are each directly mounted on fire-resistant brickwork rather than a metallic frame; also, the associated caps are each made of ceramic material with optional reinforcement and include a metal insert which is heat insulated from the oven by a heat barrier. The metal insert facilitates magnetic hoisting of the cap during unloading and loading of the oven and is provided with an adjoining layer of fired clay and felt. The engaging surfaces of the cap body and the brickwork of the filling shaft opening are preferably conical and define an annular recess on the outside for pouring cement or the like to secure the cap in position and seal off the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4368104
Abstract: An inspection hole cover for coke ovens includes a bowl-shape shell made of a material having relatively low magnetic properties such as 300 Series stainless steel. The shell is filled with a suitable heat insulating material such as a hardened refractory filler or ceramic fiber. A closure member may also be provided at the open end of the shell for retaining the heat insulating material within the cover. Because the cover is relatively non-magnetic, it is not subject to inadvertent removal by magnetic lifts used in coking facilities. However, provision is made for lifting the inspection hole cover by a hook, and a method of making the cover is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4314889
Abstract: A gas-transfer tube assembly is used to extract charging gases through an orifice in the roof of one coke oven chamber and discharge the gases into an adjacent second coke oven chamber through an orifice in the roof thereof. Each orifice has a riser with an annular water seal normally closed by a removable cover. The gas-transfer tube assembly includes downwardly-extending tubular end portions with elbow parts that are selectively connected together by a straight mid-section used to change the spacing between the downwardly-extending end portions. The gas-transfer tube assembly is supported for vertical movement on a car that runs along a monorail supported by buckstays. The car is stabilized by rollers at the top of the car to engage a rail.

  • Patent number: 4236972
Abstract: A cover and cover assembly fabricated from steel plate for selectively covering an opening communicating with a coke oven and cooperable with seal rim sealing surface which surrounds the opening. The cover includes a knife-like sealing edge which engages the seal rim sealing surface to provide a primary seal therefor. An area on the cover peripheral surface is generally compatible with an area of the seal rim sealing surface for providing a secondary seal. In one instance, the knife-like sealing edge supports the cover in a manner such that compatible sealing rim and cover surfaces are slightly spaced apart from each other. Tar, pitch, residue and by-products of the coking operation which may by-pass the primary seal accummulate in this gap area at the start of a coking operation to complete the secondary seal.

  • Patent number: 4186056
Abstract: Frame has an opening therethrough and is positioned on a coke oven chamber ceiling with the opening of the frame aligned with a filling opening of the coke oven chamber ceiling. The frame has formed therein a recessed duct which surrounds the opening. A filling cover, adapted to close the opening, has extending therefrom a substantially annular projection. The duct in the frame has filled therein a displaceable material which is capable of being displaced by the projection, for example a pulverulent material. When the cover is positioned over the frame, the projection extends into and partially displaces the displaceable material, thereby sealing the cover with respect to the frame and closing the filling opening.
