Retort And Kiln Patents (Class 202/86)
  • Patent number: 8647586
Abstract: Described is an apparatus to convert carbonaceous materials, particularly biomass and those biomass resources which are remotely located, into a high performance solid fuel. The biomass processing system, provides a continuous process which can be completely powered by the energy contained in the biomass. The heat, mechanical power and electrical power are provided from the energy in the biomass, through the methods described. In this way, the apparatus is free to operate in remote locations, where no power or auxiliary fuel sources are available.

  • Patent number: 6371757
Abstract: A kiln fuel system and method for producing cement. The system includes a tank for storing a fuel and a suction heater for drawing and preheating the fuel from the tank. A pressure station pressurizes the preheated fuel and a heater heats the preheated and pressurized fuel. A burner receives the fuel from the heater and ignites the fuel to form a flame and heat the concrete. The fuel is preferably a bitumen/water fuel mixture. A burner valve train is provided for regulating an amount and mixture of fuel and air supplied to the burner, preventing the flow of fuel to the burner upon detection of a predetermined condition, regulating an amount of heated and pressurized fuel supplied to the burner and providing a source of pressurized air for controlling a size of the flame produced by the burner. A slop tank is connected to the tank for receiving the fuel upon detecting a temperature of the fuel is above a predetermined value in the suction heater or above a predetermined pressure in the pressurizing station.

  • Patent number: 5354428
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the distillation of liquids which is particularly suited for the removal of soluble impurities and insoluble and non-volatile particles of 10 microns to 0.2 micron or less in size. A substantially elongated distillation chamber having walls equipped with axially disposed concentric boiling rings spaced from the walls near the bottom, and a packing stop, packing redirector rings for condensed vapor, and a reflux condenser in the upper part of the distillation chamber provide, during distillation, a smooth convective upward flow of distilling liquid and vapor proximate the walls and boiling rings and a smooth convective downward flow of distilling liquid and vapor substantially centrally of the distillation chamber.

  • Patent number: 5034021
Abstract: Apparatus is described for the pyrolysis of coal comprising a pyrolysis tower through which crushed coal and hot gas are counter-currently passed. The tower enables a controlled temperature profile to be maintained in the tower, and contains inner appurtenances which define cascading passageways to promote heat exchange and mixing of the coal with the hot gas. The coal volatiles are carried out of the top of the tower by the gas. The pyrolysis tower may be conjoined with a gasifier so as to most directly utilize the char residuals remaining after pyrolysis of the coal while they are still hot to more efficiently produce a hot synthesis gas, to be used to perform thermal pyrolysis in the tower.

  • Patent number: 4058205
Abstract: A process and apparatus for decomposing kerogen and recovering oil, high BTU gas and energy for the process wherein a crushed oil shale is fed to a rotary preheater (300.degree. to 350.degree. F.) hence into a rotary retort (850.degree.-1050.degree. F.) where the kerogen is decomposed and the oil evaporated, removed and condensed. From the retort the crushed shale goes to a hopper where any residual oil is stripped out by super heated steam leaving a char on the crushed shale. The stripped shale is fed into a furnace wherein the char is burned to provide heat for the process. To supplement the char and provide enough BTU's for the process, it is necessary to add a small amount of coal to the feed to the process. The hot gases from the furnace first pass into contact with the rotary retort and hence indirectly heat the oil shale in the retort. The hot furnace gases (or a portion thereof) then pass into direct contact with the crushd oil shale feed in the preheater.
