Solar Still Patents (Class 203/DIG1)
  • Patent number: 4204914
Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing contaminants from water having solid contaminants dissolved therein. Contaminated water flows across a grid and into a storage tank. The grid utilizes solar energy to heat that water to a predetermined temperature. A heat transfer structure which is dome-shaped and receives water from the storage tank and a preheater means utilizing solar energy heats the water to a further predetermined temperature. An evaporator means receives the heated water and exposes it to a vacuum condition so that the temperature of the water is above the saturation temperature. The water is thus vaporized, and solid contaminants dissolved therein are separated therefrom. The solids are deposited on a plurality of moving belts and are then moved into a solids removal system. The solids removal system comprises a plurality of trap door pairs upon which the solids are deposited and which are sequentially opened so that the vacuum conditions existing in the evaporator are not disturbed.

  • Patent number: 4194949
Abstract: According to one aspect of the invention, a system is disclosed for substantially continuous distillation of water which comprises a plurality of parallel distillation units each comprising series of fluid and preferably also Fresnel-type lenses. Water to be distilled is preheated by circulating it through the fluid lenses on which evaporated water vapor is condensed to produce distilled water. The quantity of water circulated in the lenses is many more times the quantity of water evaporated by the solar energy concentrated by the lenses and condensed per unit of time to allow the circulated water to carry off heat recuperated within the lenses and the system. The preheated water circulated through the lenses is discharged into a central container in which the foci of the fluid and Fresnel-type lenses are located. Secondary containers are provided to receive overflow from the central container since preheated water may be discharged into the central container faster than it is being evaporated.

  • Patent number: 4151046
Abstract: The double effect floating solar still uses a partly immersed corrugated metal plate to heat the upper layer of a body of water in order to establish a temperature difference between the upper and lower sections of the still. The difference in temperature creates a difference in vapor pressures, forcing the vapor produced in the hot section of the still to flow into a submerged condenser, giving up the heat of condensation to the surrounding water, preheating it before it reaches the stage of evaporation.

  • Patent number: 4135985
Abstract: Desalination apparatus using solar energy comprises a main insulated container with a subsidiary preheating container next to it; the main container is covered with a transparent cover serving as a selective filter to provide "the greenhouse effect" and also as a condensation surface for water vapor, and this transparent cover incorporates a hollow space, for example by making the cover double skinned. The hollow space forms part of a syphon which automatically regulates the water levels, transferring salt water from a preheating container to the main container as the level in the main container falls due to loss by evaporation leading to condensation and withdrawal of the desalinated water. The hollow part of the transparent cover thus serves also to preheat the incoming salt water with the heat lost upon condensation by the vapor within the main container.

  • Patent number: 4121977
Abstract: A process for simultaneously generating power and recovering potable water from a source of salinous water -- e.g. sea water. Salinous water, from a locus which is proximate to the surface thereof and at a relatively high temperature -- e.g. about 85.degree. F. -- is increased in temperature via indirect contact with a vaporous phase, derived from the surface water at an elevated temperature and a subatmospheric pressure. The preheated salinous water is exposed to radiant solar energy, in a solar radiation heat sink, to further increase the temperature thereof. Thus-heated salinous water is introduced into a first flash separation zone, maintained at subatmospheric pressure, to provide a first substantially non-salinous vaporous phase and a first salinous liquid phase. The first vaporous phase is passed into and through a turbine, from the resulting motion of which power is generated.
