Patent number: 5433844Abstract: Apparatus and process for pathogen reduction in waste where dewatered sludge having a solids content in the range of 10-60% is mixed with a selected alkaline additive selected from the group consisting of calcium oxide or calcium carbonate group. Hydration to calcium hydroxide occurs with an attendant release of heat. The pH of the sludge is then elevated and the heat of the hydration reaction is retained. Supplemental heat is added to the sludge, either to preheat the sludge prior to mixing it, or while mixing it, or both, such that effective neutralization of pathogens results. The supplemental heat is added by indirectly heating the sludge by heat generated by electric elements carried either in the mixing member, or by the chamber, or both, with electric power being supplied from outside the chamber.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 1994Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Assignee: RDP CompanyInventor: Paul G. Patent number: 5433842Abstract: A marine vessel waste treatment system includes a tank for receiving successive charges of liquid and solid waste material. A water conduit conducts heated water from the vessel's engine through the tank to heat the contents thereof above the level at which coliform bacteria can survive, thereby reducing the count of such bacteria to a level at which it is safe and acceptable to discharge the material into a waterway. A macerator pump is mounted in the tank for operation only after the temperature within the tank is sufficiently high. An electrically operated heating element is also mounted in the tank to accelerate the treatment of waste and can be used alone when desired. A thermal switch at the waste material input inhibits discharge if a fresh charge of material is received when the system is ready to discharge, thereby preventing discharge into the environment of untreated material.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1994Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Inventors: Nathan Morris, Donald P. Patent number: 5395519Abstract: Filter devices are useful in hydraulic systems for removing contaminants or foreign particles from the oil in the hydraulic system. One of the problems encountered with such filters is that they are subjected to high pressure drops thereacross when the oil is cold. Patent number: 5360549Abstract: A method of and a system for monitoring circulating water systems for conditions susceptible to deposition of a variety of scaling deposits. The invention includes presenting upset conditions at a surface area in the circulating water stream, or in a sidestream in a conduit connected to the main circulating water system, and closely monitoring either heat transfer rate or heat transfer resistance at the water contact surface adjacent the area of upset. When conditions for scaling are present, the upset conditions tend to cause formation of scale deposits at the upset area before the scaling occurs in the main circulating water stream, permitting countermeasures to be taken which inhibit scaling. In the specific case of boilers, heat exchangers or cooling towers, CaCO.sub.3 scaling is monitored at an area where the upset conditions are present, the upset conditions are an increase in the heat transfer rate. Patent number: 5198104Abstract: A device that reclaims industrial fluids. Solid contaminants are removed from the liquid being reclaimed by a series of increasingly fine filter elements positioned within a filter housing. The substantially solid contaminant-free fluid then enters an evaporation chamber having a design that constrains the fluid to form a thin film atop an evaporation plate at the bottom of the chamber to facilitate evaporation of volatile contaminants. Insert members are positioned within the evaporation chamber to increase the surface area of the thin film to further enhance the removal of the volatile contaminants. Patent number: 5143626Abstract: The invention discloses an apparatus and process for destroying pathogens and dehydrating streams of waste in one, continous process. More particularly, the invention contains an auger with specially modified, variably angled blades which agitates a stream of waste. Also, contained in tandem with the auger, a series of variably angled infrared radiate elements are positioned above the augar exposing the moving stream of waste to radiation. Thus, as the waste stream is transported along, the auger blades continually expose the waste stream to the radiation, thereby killing the entrapped pathogens and evaporating the insitu water. Further, the auger and infrared radiation heater elements are encased in a sealed trough, thus sealing in the heat being generated by this process. By sealing the trough, the heat provides excess energy to aid in destroying pathogens and evaporating the insitu water contained in the waste stream, until the water content is less than or equal to five per cent (5%) by unit volume.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1990Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: Sludge Drying Systems, Inc.Inventor: James E. Patent number: 4898679Abstract: Gaseous ozone is admixed and stored with water under such conditions that the density of ozone in the water is increased above the normally obtained and held stabily at such levels so that it may be efficiently transported through the processing plant being cleaned. Specifically, the present invention provides for the chilling of the ozone and water carrier to increase density and permit the subsequent increase in temperature to cause propulsion of the water and ozone through the plant to be cleaned in-place.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1989Date of Patent: February 6, 1990Inventors: Seymour Siegel, Louis Maggio

Patent number: 4882099Abstract: An aspirator aerator for inducing the flow of atmospheric air at high velocity below the surface of a substance so as to allow oxygen to freely and quickly transfer into the substance. The aerator includes an outer tubular housing having an inner tube disposed therein, one end of the housing being associated with an aspiration mechanism for inducing fluid flow through the aerator, the other end of the housing being associated with a drive for driving the aspiration mechanism. The aerator further including a deicing mechanism disposed between the inner tube and the outer tubular housing for deicing the aerator. The aerator may further be provided with a control circuit for controlling the operation of the drive and deicing mechanism in response to a signal denoting the presence or absence of icing conditions.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1988Date of Patent: November 21, 1989Assignee: Aeration Industries, Inc.Inventors: Joseph A. Patent number: 4877519Abstract: A waste water treatment system for high temperature hydrolysis of cyanides has a reactor operating at a sufficiently high temperature and pressure to effect hydrolysis of cyanide in the waste waters. A heat exchanger system is provided through which reactor effluent and reactor influent streams flow. The improved waste water treatment system includes a first tube in tube heat exchanger for an influent stream and a second tube in tube heat exchanger for an effluent stream. A heat exchange medium is circulated between the effluent heat exchanger and the influent heat exchanger to cool down the effluent and in turn use the heat to heat up the influent to the reactor. The heat exchangers are arranged such that the influent and effluent streams pass through the tube side of each heat exchanger to minimize clogging of the first and second heat exchangers, while at the same time providing for effective heat exchange in cooling the effluent and heating up the waste waters to be treated.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1988Date of Patent: October 31, 1989Assignee: Cyanide Destruct Systems, Inc.Inventor: Herbert L. Patent number: 4865723Abstract: Air holding spaces are incorporated into a ring attached by arms to a driveshaft supported on sealed bearings in a vessel containing saline water. Air compressed by a blower or air compressor, powered by external power (i.e. prime mover), is injected into the air holding spaces by injectors. The spaces ascend due to their buoyancy, imparting a rotary motion to the driveshaft. Energy developed is transmitted through the driveshaft to an electric generator powering the system control computer, sensors and valves. Energy is also used to rotate a water pump which draws in saline water and pumps it to a saline water tank at the top of the vessel, where it circulates through an array of water holding tubes of thermally conductive material. Heat generated by the compression of the injected air is conducted to the saline water. This heat and the molecular agitation of the water by the ascending air causes the water molecules at the surface to evaporate into the vapor state.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1988Date of Patent: September 12, 1989Inventor: Dennis A.
