Patent number: 8771515Abstract: A horizontal flow water treatment method and wetland biofilter apparatus provides a chamber with impermeable outer walls spaced away from permeable interior walls of a media filtration bed such that a catch basin is formed between the outer walls and the interior walls. The catch basin creates an open area around the perimeter of the interior walls for influent water to fill within the open area on all sides before penetrating the filtration media, providing a large surface area for influent water to interact with the media filtration bed. The influent water enters the catch basin in a horizontal flow path to provide for pre-settling of particulates before making contact with the filtration media. The biofilter design increases the available surface area of the media filtration bed by up to four times for a given volume of water, and thereby minimizes the loading or infiltration rate on the media filtration bed.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2012Date of Patent: July 8, 2014Assignee: Modular Wetland Systems, Inc.Inventors: Greg B Kent, Zach J Kent

Publication number: 20140183113Abstract: A runoff water vault may be divided into an input chamber which receives runoff water and a second chamber which also separates and stores buoyant and non-buoyant materials separated from the runoff water stream. While the separators in such systems remove particles of different densities than water quite well, they have difficulty in removing neutrally buoyant debris. Screens are added into the water flow stream to catch and remove particles of neutral buoyancy. The screens are mounted in a manner which permits lateral movement of the screen relative to the water flow, such as shaking and/or flexing. Screen movement imparts pressure differential across the screen perforations releasing debris trapped against the screen, so that the debris will fall into an entrainment area and allow increased flow through the screen. The screens may also include one or more turbulator fins for intersecting the water flow and transferring energy to the screen, imparting lateral movement to the screen.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 27, 2012Publication date: July 3, 2014Inventor: Thomas Pank

Publication number: 20140054236Abstract: A gate valve curb box strainer collects debris introduced through a street level cover, minimizing debris build up in the gate valve access pipe of the curb box. Water passes through the curb box strainer, while the strainer catches debris that naturally builds up over time via the street level cover. When a worker removes the cover to exercise the valve, he need only lift the gate strainer out of the access pipe and shake the debris out of it. There is no need to take extra time digging out or vacuuming out the debris. In an emergency situation such as accessing the valve for a fire hydrant or during a water/sewer main break, this could save valuable time. After the valve has been exercised, the empty gate valve curb box strainer is dropped back in place prior to covering the gate valve curb box with the street level cover.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 27, 2012Publication date: February 27, 2014Inventor: Barry S. Patent number: 8591732Abstract: Three flow paths within a single container are provided for the separation of contaminates, such as floating debris, heavy trash, lighter fluids and heavier fluids, from an effluent stream. A first flow path is provided for low flow conditions wherein the effluent stream pools in a first chamber within the container and the surface of the pooled fluid is drawn off, leaving heavy contaminates within the first chamber. The drawn fluid, with lighter and/or floating contaminates, enters a second chamber. The fluid is drawn from the second chamber below the surface level of the fluid, leaving the lighter and floating contaminates within the second chamber. In moderate flow conditions, a second flow path is established from the first chamber and out the container, bypassing the second chamber. Fluid for the second flow path is drawn from below the surface of the fluid in the first chamber to exclude light and floating contaminates.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2010Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Assignee: Baysaver Technologies, LLCInventor: Thomas E. Patent number: 8591729Abstract: The storm drain with water trap is installed in the opening of a storm or sewer drain to close off the underlying drain channels and residual water therein from the open air, thus preventing escape of mold, mosquitoes, and other hazards into the air. The device has an insert having an open top and bottom. A shallow water trap pan is suspended below the insert. In dry conditions, the water trap contains little water, the relatively light weight of the trap and contained water allowing it to be lifted by springs against the bottom of the insert to form a seal. When runoff water flows into the drain, the greater amount of water and its weight draws the insert downward, extending the springs and opening a gap between the lower edge of the insert and the water trap pan to allow the runoff water to flow therethrough.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2012Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Inventor: Jasem M. Publication number: 20130299403Abstract: Disclosed in this specification is a system for reducing runoff from an urban area into a body of water. In one embodiment, water flows from a sedimentation basin and into plurality of bioretention cells, each extended at an angle relative to the sedimentation basin. Overflow water flows from the plurality of biorention cells into an elongated filter. In another embodiment, a system for reducing run off from an elevated road is disclosed. The system includes an enclosure with a sedimentation basin and a biofiltration basin.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 22, 2013Publication date: November 14, 2013Inventor: Susannah Drake

Publication number: 20130292315Abstract: An object of this invention is to provide an improved means of water treatment effectiveness. The invention strips floating and sinking particulates from flowing water with netting and inclined settling cells, which are arranged in an overlapping fashion to save treatment space. The effluent invert is virtually level with the influent invert to minimize pressure loss. The device pre-treats water for further treatment by filtering methods and among other application is ideally suited for applications where low depth profile treatment is beneficial or required.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2013Publication date: November 7, 2013Inventors: Gregory Stephen Duncan, Hans de Bruijn

Publication number: 20130277292Abstract: A stormwater gully comprises a chamber in which an outlet assembly is installed. The outlet assembly comprises filter units connected to an outlet housing. In use, stormwater can flow from the chamber in an upwards direction through filter units into the outlet housing. The outlet housing has an outlet, which extends from the gully. At high rates of flow, the water level in the chamber will rise until water can flow into the outlet housing through bypass inlets. The bypass inlets are connected to the interior of the housing by siphons defined by arched regions of a top cover. The siphons allow rapid discharge of water until the water level returns below the level of the bypass inlets. A slow drain down feature is provided which enables the chamber and outlet assembly to be drained below the level of the primary inlet.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2013Publication date: October 24, 2013Inventors: Robert Yaw Gyamfi Andoh, Jeremy Fink, Michael Guy Faram, Jeremy Paul Lecornu

Patent number: 8561633Abstract: The steel-reinforced HDPE rain harvesting system collects, stores, and pumps harvested rain water for a variety of non-portable uses. The rain harvesting system includes either a horizontally disposed or vertically disposed steel-reinforced plastic cylindrical wetwell connected to an inlet pipe. The inlet pipe discharges rain water into a rain filter made from a pervious concrete manhole lined with a replaceable 20-micron filter cloth. The rain filter allows rain water into the storage section of the wetwell. A high water alarm is disposed in the rain filter and alerts maintenance personnel to clean the filter when needed. A submersible pump is housed in an HDPE pump sleeve outside the wetwell and conveys effluent from a forcemain at the wetwell's bottom portion to a target area. A level monitoring system disposed inside the wetwell selectively activates the pumping system. Maintenance hatches atop the unit are included.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2010Date of Patent: October 22, 2013Inventors: Daniel M. Early, Scott F. Easter
