  • Patent number: 8038889
Abstract: A screen cleaning apparatus for use, for example, in connection with a discharge conduit of a sewage pumping station, may include a housing, a screen, a rake and a float. The housing may operate to contain a fluid (and/or define a container for the other components) and include a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. The screen may be positioned in the housing and define one or more apertures. The rake may also be positioned in the housing and have one or more protrusions, with each protrusion extending into a respective aperture in the screen. The float may apply a force to the rake so that the rake moves relative to the screen and in dependence upon variations of a volume of fluid received in the housing. Accordingly, the rake may rise and fall will the fluid level to remove debris from the screen.

  • Patent number: 8034237
Abstract: The present invention is for a self-cleaning filter basket for an overflow structure for a retention pond or storm water system. The filter basket is attached to the overflow structure over the outlet weir so that floating debris, such as trash, leaves, glass clippings, tree stems, and the like, is captured by the filter basket while sand, gravel and non-floating materials pass through the filter screen. The self-cleaning filter basket screens are cleaned by water, such as rain water, being directed through openings in the top of the filter basket to impinge against the angled screen sides in the filter basket to flush accumulated debris therefrom.

  • Patent number: 8034238
Abstract: A multi-chamber basin is sized to collect excess waste water exceeding the processing capacity of a sewage system. In order to disinfect the waste water exceeding the basin capacity, disinfectant is added at a point in the system after the first basin. After the rain event is over and there is excess sewage treatment capacity, the sewage treatment in the multi-chamber basin is returned to the sewage system. By not disinfecting the waste water in the first basin chamber, the overall disinfectant usage can be minimized.

  • Publication number: 20110186492
Abstract: A stormwater treatment system having a treatment container with two chambers, a treatment chamber and a bypass chamber. The bypass chamber includes an inlet for receiving stormwater. Disposed adjacent the inlet is an overflow tray secured to the walls of the bypass chamber. The tray includes an inlet opening for receiving the stormwater to be treated, and a discharge opening through the baffle wall that separates the two chambers for discharging stormwater that enters at low flow rates. The stormwater to be treated passes through the discharge opening into the treatment chamber where it is treated by the filter media. High flow rates will bypass the treatment chamber by overflowing a dam wall or weir defined by the overflow tray directly into the bypass chamber. Treated water from the treatment chamber passes through an underdrain pipe that enters into the bypass chamber. All water from the bypass chamber exits through pipe openings, preferably on each of three sides of the bypass chamber wall.

  • Patent number: 7919002
Abstract: Most commercial & residential buildings have rainwater collection systems that consist of leaders and gutters that collect water coming off the roof. These leaders and gutters are connected to drain pipes that channel the water away from the structure, usually into a dry well or storm drain. A substantial add-on to the leader and gutter system is a debris trap with an overflow port. The debris trap/overflow port may be attached to the leader at waist height (for easy access) to collect leaves, tree droppings, windblown litter and other materials. This debris can be easily discarded by opening an access panel to empty a built-in strainer. When a dry well or storm drain becomes saturated, water will back up through the leader causing seepage and overflow into the building and create erosion that can damage the foundation. The function of the overflow port is to divert water from the drain pipe away from the foundation.

Abstract: The invention is a particle and sediment filter for stormwater. A long permeable filter bag is laid out horizontally within an enclosure. The bag is formed of at least two layers of parallel tubes that give each layer the pleated look of a typical air mattress. Stormwater is collected from the filter bag by perforated pipes held within the creases between the tubes of the layers of the bag, with the pipes draining to the outside of the enclosure. The bag is also supported above the bottom of the enclosure by additional perforated pipes located within the creases between the tubes, thus allowing the filtered liquid to also drain off beneath the bag. The stormwater input is from a pipe that feeds a manifold formed in the bag and connected to each tube. The top of the enclosure is removable for replacing the filter. Abstract: An input chamber receives runoff water to be cleaned. Part of the way up the chamber wall is a restricted outlet which feeds a system for cleaning the water. At a still higher elevation another opening allows runoff water to flow to another cleaning system. Near the top of the chamber is an outlet pipe. A vertical baffle in front of the outlet cleans water that flows under the baffle on its way to the outlet. When the incoming flow rate is very high, water passes over the baffle to the outlet.

Abstract: Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to techniques for collecting run-off and/or draining water from commercial or residential sites, filtering out the liquid, and using the filtered liquid to engage one or more turbines to generate electricity. In certain example embodiments, the one or more turbines are located downstream of filtration, grease-collection, and/or other purification devices. The electricity generated by the one or more turbines may be stored in batteries, serve as a power source for an active drainage/filtration system, used for other activities in or around the site, etc. In certain example embodiments, elements (such as sidewalls, vanes, and/or the like) may be provided upstream of the at least one turbine and downstream of the filtration subsystem, with adjacent elements defining constriction locations therebetween to help accelerate the flow of fluids passing therethrough.

Abstract: A storm water filter box has a floatable skimmer apparatus for preventing floatable debris from entering the filter box outlet. The filter box has an inlet and an outlet and an inlet filter located in the filter box housing. A portable skimmer is positioned in the box between the inlet and outlet and will rise and fall with the water level in the filter box to keep the top of the skimmer above the water level and force the storm water passing through the filter box under the floatable skimmer thereby blocking floatable debris from entering the filter box outlet.

Abstract: A pond receives a flow of contaminated water into the pond substantially tangential to a volume of clarified water which is stored in the pond and which is largely quiescent. The tangential inflow overcomes a large rotational inertia in the stored volume of clarified water and establishes a slow spiral flow path about the periphery of the pond and inwards to a central outlet. The clarified stored water is discharged ahead of the inflowing contaminated water increasing the residence time of the contaminated water in the pond and permitting contaminants to receive at least partial treatment, such as settling of sediment, in the pond.
