    Abstract: Oxidizable contaminants in water are destroyed rapidly and efficiently by exposing the water to oxidizing conditions under pressure. Specifically, a single dose of hydrogen peroxide may be injected into the water, followed by the repeated injection and mixing of low doses of ozone. In each such high intensity mixing/reaction stage, ozone is injected at a pressure, velocity, and direction approximately matching that of the contaminated water flow. High intensity mixing under pressure facilitates rapid and complete oxidation of the contaminants with minimal stripping of volatile contaminants and waste of undissolved ozone. Residual ozone levels after high intensity mixing may be carefully monitored and minimized by adjusting the injection of hydrogen peroxide and ozone in order to suppress the formation of bromate. Additional contaminants may be removed by passing the treated water through activated carbon beds.

An ozone contacting vessel is provided and includes a downflow tube through which water is caused to flow. The downflow tube is positioned vertically within a diffusion chamber. Within the downflow tube are a plurality of layers of transversely extending porous elements that are in communication with a source of ozone to provide a relatively uniform distribution of fine ozone bubbles over the cross-sectional area of the downflow tube. The porous elements are carried by an ozone conduit that is substantially coaxially positioned within the downflow tube. Spacer members are provided to space the porous elements from the downflow tube wall, and the entire ozone distributor assembly can be easily removed form the downflow tube for servicing the porous elements and can then be easily reinstalled thereafter.

Gas is separated from the water at the head space, and treated degasified water leaves the apparatus at the base of the outer tank.

    Abstract: A filtration device is provided for withdrawing permeate essentially continuously from a multicomponent aqueous substrate containing growing microorganisms in a reservoir. A vertical skein of fiber is scrubbed with coarse bubbles which emanate from a conversion baffle positioned under the skein. The substrate is aerated with fine bubbles in a size range small enough to transfer oxygen to the substrate efficiently. The baffle traps the fine bubbles and converts them to coarse bubbles which are effective to scrub the fibers. In the most preferred embodiment, the finished headers of the skein are derived from composite headers comprising a fixing lamina of resin in which the fibers are potted near their terminal ends, and a fugitive lamina of fugitive powdery material in which the terminal ends of the fibers are potted. The fugitive lamina is removed, preferably by dissolving the powder, e.g. finely divided common salt in water.

The inflatable buoyant members are connected through tubing to valves from which air may be supplied under pressure, either from the air supply pipe or form a portable air compressor or a compressed air container or through an air pressure line leading from a remote air supply located on the shore of the basin.

The thermophilic reaction is preferably controlled within a desired temperature range by control of the flow of fresh air versus recycled air being injected into the sludge. The fresh air to recycle air ratio can be controlled by several different mechanisms so as to produce the desired temperature range. The air is also utilized to mix the sludge within the tank. A pumping apparatus is also provided for transferring sludge into and out of the tank and for recirculating the sludge for purposes of auxiliary mixing.

Part of such force is transferred from one end of a beam of the aeration unit to the other end of the beam to move both ends of the beam. The beam supports the pipes of the aeration unit. A force transfer module includes one force transfer strand held in a force transfer path between fixed opposite ends of the strand. The force transfer path extends in part along the beam, which is placed in compression. Motion of the one end of the beam resulting from the force is transferred by the single force transfer strand to the opposite end of the beam so that both ends of the beam move relative to the basin under the action of the force. When the aeration unit uses a many-sided frame to support aeration pipes, many modules are used to transfer the force along the pipes to move the entire frame at one time. A method provides a force transfer strand with first and second opposite ends and a length substantially constant under tension.

When the device is submerged substantially below the surface or if a gas other than oxygen is to be dissolved, additional gas must be pumped into the bottom opening of the rotating diffuser or very near the high velocity horizontal liquid jets on the periphery of the diffuser. This device can be used in the oxygenation of treated sewage water, the removal of impurities from liquids, and the oxygenation of horticultural ponds to increase production.

    Abstract: A process of dewatering primary-treated sewage which includes mixing the sewage with a coagulant or flocculant aid, usually activated polymer. The sewage is applied to a sand bed whereby the flocculated solids in the sewage are separated from the liquid in the sewage, by collecting on the top of the sand bed. The flocculated solids located on the top of the sand bed are air dried. The dried flocculated solids are removed from the top of the sand bed.

    Abstract: A water aeration system for receiving gas and/or iron laden water from a water source and delivering purified water to a service line. The system includes a tank with an internal volume fillable with water, a tank inlet, a tank outlet, and an aerator. The downwardly moving water encounters a counterflow of upwardly migrating bubbles introduced into the tank by the aerator, and the air bubbles cause impurities in the water to precipitate out and settle onto the floor of the tank and gases to the vented to atmosphere. After moving to the bottom portion of the internal volume of the tank, the water passes upwardly through an upstanding water outlet pipe located within the tank internal volume and passes through the tank outlet to be removed from the tank. The system may also include a mechanism for flushing from the tank precipitates collected on the tank floor.

A pumping apparatus is also provided for transferring sludge into and out of the tank and for recirculating the sludge for purposes of auxiliary mixing.
