Abstract: A filtration apparatus for use in polymer processing includes a housing having an internal bore for directing polymer flow and a channel oriented transversely to the bore. A slide plate for supporting filters is movable through the channel and across the bore. An annular upstream seal ring sealably contacts the slide plate. A surface of the upstream seal ring facing the upstream direction is angled with respect to the bore. A plurality of ring segments are arranged to form an annular segmented ring. The segmented ring presents a tapered ring surface that is generally complimentarily angled relative to the angled surface of the upstream seal ring. Pressurized polymer flowing through the bore imparts radially forces on the ring segments, causing the ring segments to impart axial forces on the upstream seal ring to enhance the seal interface between the upstream seal ring and the slide plate.

Abstract: A device for controlling the flow of plastics material, heated until flowable, through a housing, in particular a filtering device or a direction-control device for the plastics material, comprises a flow channel extending through the housing, and a plunger of circular cross-section longitudinally displaced in a bore of the housing transversely to the longitudinal direction of the flow channel. The plunger crosses the flow channel. An unslotted scraper ring is mounted outside the housing on a portion of the plunger projecting from the housing and is held by a stop so that the plunger is displaceable relative to the scraper ring. The inner diameter (d2) of the scraper ring is smaller than the diameter (d0) of the bore of the housing and also smaller than the diameter (d1) of the end of the plunger portion remote from the housing in the coldest operating state of that plunger portion.

Abstract: A filter-replacement cassette for an extruder. A housing (1) has at least one bore. The bores (2 & 3) extend above and below and at a right angle to the horizontally flowing plastic. A cartridge (4 or 5) that accommodates a replaceable filter (5) slides back and forth inside each bore. The object is to facilitate start-up operation. The cartridge accordingly has at least one tap (7, bore 15, or bore 45) permanently integrated into it in addition to the replaceable filter. The housing accommodates either a cartridge or a start-up outlet bore (16, 36, or 47). While the cartridge is in a prescribed position, the start-up outlet bore can communicate with the cartridge's tap and with an intake channel (13 or 31) for the extrudate.

  • Patent number: 6500336
Abstract: A polymer melt filtering device comprising a housing with an inflow (3) and an outflow (4) for the polymer melt, in addition to a slider (5) which can be sealingly displaced therebetween, perpendicular to said inflow and outflow. The slider (5) consists of filtering layers (7) which are supported in cavities (8) and which can be selectively placed in between the inflow and outflow. The housing is comprised of two parts (1, 2) that are arranged in such a way that their front surfaces face towards each other. The inventive device is characterised in that one of the parts of the housing (1, 2) is floatingly mounted; in that the parts of the housing are reinforced in the middle area of the housing by beads (11), whereby the edges thereof (pressure surfaces 12) are slanted towards the outside or are conical; and in that the parts of the housing (1, 2) are maintained by clamping plates (12-15) which can be placed against each and which encompass and clamp the beads (11).

Abstract: An apparatus for isolating cell material from a tissue system and/or a liquid includes (1) a vessel open at the top, into which the cell material to be isolated can be introduced in the tissue system and/or the liquid; and (2) a separating device having a stamp-shaped configuration and including a flat separating disk having a peripheral edge fitting with the inner walls of the vessel in a fluid-tight manner and presenting at least one passage opening which is covered by a filter membrane, and which device can be inserted from the top into the vessel. The isolating disk pressurises the cell material inclusive of the tissue system and/or the liquid and acts thereupon with shearing forces by rotation. The cells and/or cell systems pass through the pores of the filter membrane whereas the residual tissue material is retained.

  • Patent number: 6234323
Abstract: An elongated suction header for use in a sludge removal system is mounted transversely on a track guide that is mounted on and driven along a track rail affixed to a floor of a tank in a water treatment facility. As the track guide moves along the track rail, the header is moved transversely to the rail adjacent the floor of the tank. In cross section, the header has a top section that is generally dome shaped and extends from a bottom wall of the header. The ends of the top section overhang beyond or extend below the bottom wall along a longitudinal axis of the header. Inlet orifices are provided in the bottom wall of the header so that sludge is drawn into an inner compartment of the header when vacuum is applied to a vacuum port that extends through the top section of the header into the header compartment. In order to assist in channeling the sludge to the inlet orifices, flow splitters extend from the bottom wall between adjacent pairs of the inlet orifices.

  • Patent number: 6196820
Abstract: A process and a corresponding device for filtering plastics in an injection molding machine having a plasticizing unit and a mold cavity. A slide having a receptacle for a filter element is arranged between the plasticizing unit and the mold cavity. A piston cylinder displacing unit is mounted parallel to a principal axis of the plasticizing unit so as to be slideably contactable by the slide holding the filter element. The displacement unit has a filter holder surrounded by a filter preheater for the insertion and preheating of a fresh filter element. The slide is displaced so that the filter receptacle in the slide corresponds to the filter holder in the displacement unit thereby enabling a spent filter element to be ejected while simultaneously inserting the fresh filter element into the receptacle. The slide is then returned to its operating position in which the filter element is acted upon by the plastic casting substance.
