  • Patent number: 4081373
Abstract: In turbine engine systems liquid diesel fuel (more viscous than gasoline) s heretofore been purged of water impurity and solid impurity by a two stage system comprised of a disposable cartridge type depth filter and a water coalescer. The present invention modifies the conventional system by replacing the disposable cartridge type depth filter with an extended life cyclone; concentrated impurities are vented from the cyclone and coalescer to an additional separator mechanism. This additional separator mechanism returns purified fuel to the fuel tank; separated impurity is exhausted out of the system.

  • Patent number: 4052306
Abstract: A floatable oil sweep useful in controlling an oil spill on a moving body of water comprises an elongated web of oil sorbent adapted to float on the body of water with its large-area faces parallel to the waterline, and a weighted open-mesh netting attached to the web and adapted to be suspended below the floating web when the oil sweep is deployed. Use of the netting has been found to significantly extend the period of time before oil droplets are carried under the oil sweep by movement of the body of water.

  • Patent number: 4021347
Abstract: An improved sewage treatment system including a horizontally elongated tank divided transversely into a primary, aeration compartment, a secondary, settling compartment and a tertiary, filtering compartment. In a first aspect of the invention, overflow of treated effluent from the tank enters a further treatment section, which may constitute a longitudinal extension of the tank, wherein the effluent is constrained by baffles to flow in an elongated path while having chlorine or ozone mixed therewith to provide further purification. Another aspect of the invention resides in the novel structure of the filtering section wherein filter screens of different guage or opening size are used to achieve a greater degree of purification.

  • Patent number: 4006085
Abstract: Liquid treating apparatus wherein the inlet of a settling chamber communicates with the outlet of an aeration chamber. Retaining member(s) in the aeration chamber which divide it into two or more compartments are of sufficient porosity to permit the liquid to flow through at the required rate while retaining materials of a selected configuration or size. A permeable restraining member in the settling chamber separates the inlet from the outlet thereof and is of a mesh to permit liquid flow therethrough in a diffused manner. The restraining member extends above the high liquid level and terminates adjacent to the bottom of the settling chamber. An imperforate partition at the inlet end of the settling chamber carries a porous deflector which extends upwardly and inwardly in the settling chamber to restrain downward movement of liquid passing over the upper end of the partition.

  • Patent number: 4004587
Abstract: A parenteral liquid administration set is provided which comprises flexible tubing, connection means with a parenteral liquid source at one end of the tubing, and means for connection to a blood vessel-penetrating member, such as a needle, at the other end of the tubing. In accordance with this invention, a filter, positioned in fluid communication with the bore of the tubing, comprises a housing, which carries first and second filter members in parallel flow position so that each increment of fluid flow through the tubing passes through one or the other of the filter members. The first filter member is hydrophilic, to permit the passage of solution under normal administration conditions. The second filter member is hydrophobic, to permit the passage of gas after wetting of the filter members. Accordingly, the filter members, which are closed from the exterior by the administration set, cannot airblock by the accumulation of air bubbles immediately upstream of the filter members.

  • Patent number: 3984317
Abstract: Apparatus for concentrating and washing solids in a slurry comprising a housing containing both separation/concentration and washing chambers with an inlet for continuously injecting solids -- containing fluid into the separation chamber wherein a dynamic filtering system is provided for separating the solids -- containing fluid to form a cencentrate of solids and a filtrate. The filtering system includes a plurality of stationary filter elements and a plurality of rotor elements mounted on a rotatable shaft from which they extend outwardly and adjacent the filter elements to form a plurality of alternating rotor and filter elements within the housing. The concentrate washing chamber is disposed downstream of the filtering system and includes a plurality of stationary filter elements and a plurality of rotor elements arranged similarly to the elements in the filtering system.

  • Patent number: 3977218
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a washing and drying plant for dry cleaning machines. The plant in question is formed by two concatenated circuits, one of which for the washing and the other for the drying of the treated garments and both terminate at a washing tank positioned at a level higher than that of the rest of the plant.Once the cycle has ended and the access door to the washing tank has been opened, it is possible in this way to prevent, without the intermediary of any isolating valve, the solvent gases built up during the operating cycles which, on account of their weight, remain inside the plant, from issuing therefrom.

  • Patent number: 3975273
Abstract: A two-stage fluid filter such as an automotive oil filter. The two-stages of filtering media are mounted inside a conventional cylindrical housing forming fluid inlet and outlet ports in one end thereof. One stage of the filtering media comprises an annular depth type filtering medium having a radially outer surface in fluid communication with the inlet port, and a radially inner surface in fluid communication with the outlet port so that fluid can flow from the inlet port to the outlet port by flowing radially through the depth type medium. The second stage of the filtering media comprises a spirally wound surface type filtering medium, such as filter paper, with alternate pairs of opposed surfaces of the spiral winding bonded to each other along the circumferential edges at one longitudinal end of the spiral winding.

  • Patent number: 3959141
Abstract: A filter assembly for trapping particulate contaminants in a flow of fluid includes a porous cylindrical filter element, a cylindrical screen and a by-pass valve for preventing flow blockage in the event the filter should become clogged. These components are arranged in a configuration which avoids difficulties encountered with prior systems by situating the screen downstream from both the filter element and the by-pass valve and in a separate compartment from the filter. Fluid which may be diverted from passage through the filter by the by-pass valve continues to pass through the screen so that relatively large contaminants continue to be entrapped but the diverted fluid does not pass by the contaminated surface of the clogged filter and thereby pick up previously trapped matter. Either the filter or the screen may be replaced, cleaned, or otherwise serviced without disturbing the other.

  • Patent number: 3954621
Abstract: A filtration system comprises a relatively thin prefilter medium and a relatively thick main filter medium, which are so related that the pore size of the prefilter medium is no greater than the pore size of the main filter medium. The purpose of the prefilter medium is to prevent premature clogging of the surface of the main filter medium. The arrangement is such that backwashing or replacement of the prefilter medium can be effected readily in order to prolong the life of the main filter medium.
