Patent number: 4124507Abstract: A filtering apparatus with hollow filters that are alternately placed under reduced pressure and positive pressure. The filters are reciprocally rotated through a cycle along a 180.degree. arcuate path from immersion in the unfiltered liquid to a discharge station and back again. Whle immersed and under reduced pressure, each filter passes liquid and captures cake against its surface. The filter is kept under reduced pressure and rotated to a discharge station. The reduced pressure during this portion of the cycle holds the cake against the filter and dries it. At the discharge station, the filters are placed under positive pressure to dislodge the cake and kept under positive pressure as they are rotated back toward the unfiltered liquid. The discharge station has movable scrapers that contact the filters as they are being rotated back to the unfiltered liquid to assist in dislodging the cake.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1976Date of Patent: November 7, 1978Inventor: Flavio J. Patent number: 4101285Abstract: Apparatus and methods for extracting juice from juice-laden material are disclosed. A tank system defines a row of material treating stations. A plurality of perforated baskets are swingably mounted at respective stations, each basket being operable to receive a charge of material. A flow of liquid is conducted through the stations in juice-extracting contact with the material. A basket actuating mechanism swings each basket from its associated station into a generally inverted position above the basket of a successive station to transfer the charge of material. In one preferred embodiment of the invention the basket is articulated intermediate its ends about a floating hinge. The basket actuating mechanism collapses the basket about the floating hinge to squeeze juice from the material before the material is delivered to the basket of a successive station.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1976Date of Patent: July 18, 1978Inventor: Sydney E. Patent number: 3966611Abstract: In filters of the type in which a cake of solids deposited from a liquid slurry thereof on a generally horizontal filter medium is subjected to treatment involving passage of liquid through the cake while on the filter medium, means is provided for increasing the drainage rate of the formed cake by causing the cake to form on the medium from the slurry fed thereto by gravity settling in the liquor of the slurry and by removing liquor of the slurry from above the cake while the liquor still contains unsettled fine particles, such means including means providing a backflushing flow of liquid through the underside of the filter medium and the cake forming thereon into the slurry.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1974Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Assignee: Bird Machine Company, Inc.Inventors: Orville J.
