  • Patent number: 6306291
Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring particulates in a liquid stream and the rate at which the particulates foul a filtering medium, generally a reverse osmosis membrane, to determine at what point in time the filtering medium should be cleaned or replaced. The apparatus includes a monitoring filter unit having a plurality of filter portions. The pressure drop across each filter portion, through which a sample of the feed stream is passed, is monitored. Fouling of a filter portion by accumulated particulate thereon causes an increase in the pressure drop across the filter unit. The increasing pressure drop is monitored as an indicator of the correlative or correspondent fouling of the main filtering medium to be protected. Different filter portions in the filter unit are successively used as each becomes fouled, allowing continuous monitoring for extended periods of time between filter media changes in monitoring filter unit.

  • Patent number: 6221266
Abstract: A molten polymer filtration assembly includes at least three independently controllable and removable filter housings which extend from a common inlet passage to a common outlet passage, thereby providing parallel flow paths for polymer filtration. Each of the filter housings includes an inlet valve controlling the flow of polymer from the inlet passage, an outlet valve controlling the flow of polymer to the outlet passage, and a filtration passage which extends between the inlet and outlet valves and houses a candle-type filtration element. When the inlet and outlet valves are opened, the filter housing is on-stream and allows polymer to flow from the inlet to the outlet passage. Each filter housing is individually controllable, and can be set in an on-stream state independent of the state of any of the other filter housings, such that any number of filter housings can be on-stream at a given time.

  • Patent number: 5858226
Abstract: A selectively removable gravitational and vacuum sludge filtration apparatus and method that provides for retrofit into a container and separation of the sludge solids from the sludge liquids therein. A pair of spaced vertically oriented filter assemblies each define a filtrate cavity therein and are connected by separator plates. The filter assemblies permit the flow of sludge liquids into the filtrate cavity, but not sludge solids. A separator divides each filtrate cavity into two cavity sections, a first filtrate cavity and a second filtrate cavity. Filtrate drains into first and second filtrate cavities by either vacuum or gravitational drainage, depending on the level of sludge within the container. Vacuum drainage occur in first or second filtrate cavity if either cavity is situated below the level of the sludge within the container. A first and second filtrate evacuation means provide for the evacuation of filtrate from the first and second filtrate cavities by the use of a vacuum pump.

  • Patent number: 5772879
Abstract: A pair of strainer systems in parallel provide continuous filtration of solids from an influent stream. In influent strikes a filtration medium in the form of a porous membrane at an angle other than the perpendicular to create a washing action to remove filtrate from the surface of the porous membrane. As filtrate builds up on the surface of the porous membrane, the pressure differential across the strainer increases to a first setpoint which activates a motor which drives a wiper blade to scrub filtrate off the surface of the porous membrane. Ultimately, solids build up within the pores of the porous membrane to a point where the wiper blade is no longer effective to lower the differential pressure across the strainer to an acceptable level. When this happens, a differential pressure signal isolates the operations strainer and places the standby, parallel strainer in service. Filtrate scrubbed from the surface of the porous membrane is collected in a sump and occasionally drained or flushed from the system.
