  • Publication number: 20040164031
Abstract: An apparatus, a system and a method for obtaining sieved water, for fighting fires, from a source of water having foreign objects are disclosed. A strainer is connected to a tank via a hose such that water may be pumped from the strainer to the tank. The strainer includes a water inlet having a sieve-like material over it and a water outlet connector where the hose connects. The strainer is submerged in a source of water such as a pond or stream. As water enters the strainer via the water inlet, the sieve-like material prevents foreign objects such as rocks and leaves from entering the strainer. Therefore, the foreign objects never reach the tank. A pan may be connected to the bottom of the strainer to elevate the strainer above the bottom of the source of water. Such elevating helps achieve desired flow rates without stirring or roiling foreign objects such as sand or gravel that may be at the bottom of the source of water.

Abstract: A portable cleaning device for removing sediment from an enclosure retaining water. The cleaning device includes a pump, a housing, and a receptacle. The pump creates a fluid flow through the cleaning device. The cleaning device draws water from the enclosure into the housing through a tube. The housing includes an inlet passage and an outlet passage defined within the housing. The fluid flow path through the cleaning device is at least partially defined by the inlet passage, the receptacle and the outlet passage. The inlet passage receives the fluid flow from the tube and empties the fluid flow into the receptacle. The outlet passage receives fluid flow out of the receptacle. A filter is connected to the outlet passage and prevents relatively large particles in the water from entering the outlet passage. The fluid flow proceeds from the outlet passage toward the pump through an outlet tube.

The filter is composed of a composite material including a porous plastic material and material adapted to increase the viscosity of a liquid coming into contact therewith. The filter is constructed to accommodate the changes associated with air flow velocity and shear force across the filter material as the fluid level in the canister rises, and automatically shuts off the vacuum to the interior environment of the suction canister.

Abstract: An apparatus is described for withdrawing filtered permeate from a substrate contained in a reservoir at ambient pressure. The apparatus includes a plurality of membrane assemblies. Each assembly has a plurality of hollow fiber filtering membranes, immersed in the reservoir, at least one permeating header with the membranes sealingly secured therein, and a permeate collector to collect the permeate sealingly connected to the at least one permeating header and in fluid communication with lumens of the membranes. The membranes of each assembly extend generally vertically upwards from a first header during permeation. One or more sources of suction are provided in fluid communication with the lumens of the membranes of each assembly through the permeate collectors and apply sufficient suction to withdraw permeate from the lumens of the membranes. An aeration system for discharging bubbles assists in keeping the membranes clean.

Abstract: A method for utilizing a filtration device for removing interferants from a sample containing cells in an automated apparatus is disclosed. The filtration device includes a microporous hollow fiber membrane having a plurality of pores sized to retain cells while allowing smaller diameter interferants to pass through the membrane. The apparatus also includes a means for of moving the sample from a sample container to and from the filtration device. The disclosed method utilizes a vacuum source to aspirate the sample into a lumen of the hollow fiber membrane so that the sample is retained in the lumen space until expelled into an analysis container or transported to an analyzer.

Abstract: This document discusses, among other things, systems and methods for ultrasonic-assisted cleaning of cross-flow membrane filters, both within and removed from a filtration system. In one example, an applied vacuum reduces a cavitation threshold, avoiding damage to certain sensitive filter membranes. In another example, the ultrasonic-assisted cleaning is used in conjunction with backflushing. In another example, different levels of ultrasound are applied to different portions of the filtration system.

Abstract: A description is given of equipment for filtering liquids, comprising three sections superimposed coaxially and placed above a container with filter walls for collecting the filtered particles. From the top to the bottom, the first section communicates directly with the second, while the second communicates with the third sector, and the latter communicates with the container via two valves. A pump introduces the liquid to be filtered into the first section, inside a filter layer, and another pump projects a quantity of the previously filtered liquid against the filter layer from the inside of the first section. By cyclically operating the valves it is possible to continuously filter the liquid, which flows out in the filtered state from ducts which branch from the first section, even while the particles deposited in the third section are discharged into a container with filter walls which is immersed in a vessel containing the liquid to be filtered.

Abstract: A filter for a carpet cleaning device and method for using therefor includes a casing and a partition that extends into the casing to define a primary chamber and a secondary chamber within the casing. A main siphon with an inverted U-shape is mounted in the partition. One end of the siphon extends into the primary chamber while the other end of the siphon extends into the secondary chamber. An auxiliary siphon is located within the secondary chamber, and a pump is attached in fluid communication with the auxiliary siphon. During operation, a wastewater/debris stream is transported into the filter. The stream collects in the primary chamber and establishes a primary fluid level therein. As the primary fluid level rises, carpet fibers and other insoluble debris settle in the primary chamber. Once the primary fluid level is even with the siphon, wastewater fluid is transported from the primary chamber to the secondary chamber and establishes a secondary fluid level therein.

Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods establish on line communication between a container and a source of blood containing leukocytes and platelets, such as a human donor. The systems and methods create a centrifugal field between the source of blood and the container that separates from the blood an unfinished suspension of platelets having a first physiologic characteristic different than the desired physiologic characteristic. The systems and methods pump the unfinished platelet suspension outside the centrifugal field through a finishing device. The finishing device changes the first physiologic characteristic to the desired physiological characteristic, thereby creating the finished platelet suspension. The systems and methods convey the finished platelet suspension from the finishing device directly into the container. The systems and methods function without interrupting the on line communication between the container and the source of blood.
