Abstract: A cylindrical filter has a filter element with a filter surface pleated in a star shape from a filter cloth and provided with an external support element. The support element is designed as a lattice-like support cylinder with intersecting lattice bars running slantwise to the outer peaks of the star-shaped pleated filter element. The lattice bars run at an angle of 45°, or at an angle in the range of 45°, to the peaks of the star-shaped filter element. The ratio of the width of each lattice bar to the thickness is about 5:1. The distance between two lattice bars running in the same direction amounts to about 20 to 22 times the width of one lattice bar. At least a portion of the peaks of the filter element is joined to, or preferably is welded to, the lattice bars.

Abstract: Filter cartridges include a pleated multi-layer filter media having a filtration membrane layer, and a structural support layer for the membrane layer which is in the form of an expanded polymeric film mesh. Most preferably, the membrane layer and the expanded polymeric film support layer are each formed of a fluoropolymer, most preferably PTFE. The preferred expanded polymeric film support layer is in the form of a relatively open mesh structure having generally diamond-shaped apertures. Improved flow rate characteristics through pleated filter media ensue when the diamond-shaped apertures of the mesh are oriented such that the long dimensions (LD) thereof are substantially transverse to the elongate pleat axis of the pleated filter medium in which the mesh is employed.

  • Patent number: 6056881
Abstract: A bilge water filtration system for removing petroleum-based liquid contaminants from the bilge water as it is being pumped from the bilge to a bilge water discharge outlet in the hull of a marine vessel, such as a boat or yacht. The filtration system employs filtration media enclosed in a modular unit equipped with a fill tube, such that media can be readily installed in the system, and then later removed to allow for subsequent destruction or recycling of the contaminants trapped by the media. The filtration system of this invention is adapted to be installed in-line with an existing bilge pumping system on boats and yachts of practically any size, and without requiring special modifications to the pumping system. In addition, the filtration system does not impede the operation of the bilge pumping system, but allows the flow bilge water to flow from the boat's bilge at conventional flow rates and with a minimal pressure drop caused by the filtration system.

More specifically, the invention comprises a ring of flexible material 20 and a purality, preferably two, of elongate flexible members 18, ends of which are secured to the flexible ring, with their intermediate parts depending from the said ring, and secured together where they cross at their intermediate depending portions, and together with the flexible ring, forming a pocket over which a fine mesh fabric fluid filter is to be positioned and held. When so assembled in use the suction pipe of the spraying equipment with its filter is received within the pocket and held in the container to filter the paint, or other fluids as it is drawn from the container. In the best and preferred form of the invention, all of the parts above mentioned are in the form of coil springs, but it should not be considered so limited thereto.

  • Patent number: 5427679
Abstract: A filtering arrangement is provided for effluent from a septic tank prior to passage to a drain field or other disposal. The filtering arrangement makes use of an open-top, U-shaped filter into which the septic effluent is conducted from the top, preferably through a T-fitting providing an open-topped channel leading into the U-shaped filter. The filter may be formed of an outer perforated casing and an inner lining of an open-cell-type polymeric material which effects the filtering of the effluent. The U-shaped filter is preferably suspended from the T-fitting. A preferred filter includes an inner and outer casing with a fibrous filter material between. The filter also preferably has an imperforate lower portion to retain a permanent body of liquid in the bottom of the filter. The arrangement provides fail-safe filtering automatically adjustable for varying flow rates and conditions of the filter. The polymeric filter medium is changed periodically to maintain efficiency.

Abstract: A filter support tube for use in a filter cartridge including a helical wound wire defining a cylinder and a plurality of reinforcing strips extending generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the helical wire cylinder and circumferentially spaced from one another about a perimeter of the cylinder. The multiple turns of the helical wire are embedded in the reinforcing strips and extend through it. The wire is coated with a bonding agent to permit the wire to bond to the reinforcing strips and to provide corrosion resistance. The reinforcing strips embedding the wire lock the wire in the desired helical configuration and provide the required column strength for the filter support tube.

  • Patent number: 5217659
Abstract: A repair method for filter elements such as those used to filter polyester during the later stages of polyester manufacture in which the filter media is a particulate solid media arranged in a desired shape and maintained in that shape by a surrounding porous container that has filtration openings of a desired size. The method fills undesirably large openings in the surrounding porous container that result from damage to the container and through which enlarged openings the particulate solid media would otherwise escape with a polymeric resin. The polymeric resin is a resin with a glass transition temperature when cured that is at least greater than the melting point of polyester, and that has an absence of any chemical functional groups at temperatures at least as great as the melting point of polyester that would substantially react with polyester, the glycol precursors of polyester, the acid precursors of polyester, or the solvents useful in cleaning polyester from such filter elements.
