    Abstract: A strainer for an emergency core cooling system (ECCS) in a nuclear power plant comprises a perforated strainer element that is immersed in a reservoir of cooling water, which is drawn through the strainer element into the emergency core cooling system. The side of the strainer element in contact with the cooling water has a contoured configuration for disrupting the formation of a flat bed of fibrous material that can trap small particulate material intended to pass through the strainer element. Incorporating this strainer element into an ECCS strainer enables the strainer to be made more compact, because the debris bed need not be spread over an unduly large area to prevent excessive head loss from the debris load in the event of a reactor loss of coolant accident. The strainer also incorporates a modular construction that uses individual strainer disc modules. Each disc module includes a perforated first disc part having a central opening and a perforated second disc part also having a central opening.

The filter is cleaned by unwrapping the screen, cleaning it, and rewrapping it over the center tube and posts.

In the preferred embodiment, a pressure-operated release valve is provided in conjunction with the inner filter, such that when a predetermined pressure is reached due to the entrapment of contaminants by the inner filter, the valve opens to allow the fluid to be filtered to flow through the outer filter.

Dirty air flows into the filter media both transverse to the peaks and laterally between the pleated sets of first and second panels.     Abstract: A filter cartridge for filtering impurities and the like from a swimming pool or other body of water is provided. The filter cartridge is positioned in a receptacle for receiving water and for recirculating it back to the pool. The filter cartridge includes a core communicating with the recirculating system and having a plurality of openings therein communicating with a supporting frame located around the core and affixed thereto. The frame has a multiplicity of openings therein and a plurality of undulations extending therealong. A flexible sleeve is located around the frame and is of sufficient size to assume the contour of the frame when water is supplied from the exterior of the sleeve to the interior of the core, thereby providing a maximum filtering surface. The sleeve has elastic bands around both ends for drawing the ends together around the core beyond the ends of the frame. The sleeve can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement.
