  • Patent number: 5750041
Abstract: In a method for backwashing a water processing system using a buoyant filter layer constrained under wire mesh screen extending across a processing vessel, a water surface level in the processing vessel is lowered below the wire mesh screen. Air is subsequently released from under the buoyant filter layer to separate substances clogging the filter layer, while allowing the release of air out of said vessel from an upper part thereof. By lowering the water surface level below the upper wire mesh screen, the filter material is allowed to move more freely because the filter material is not restricted by the wire mesh screen from making upward movement. Hence, when air is released from under the filter layer, the filter material can move uniformly over the entire filter layer, and the clogging substances such as SS captured by the filter material and the biological film formed on the surface of the filter material can be favorably removed without damaging the filter material.

The charged granular mass which has been subjected to the first or air washing operation is fluidized above the filtration layer and subjected to an extra washing operation with water and pressurized air.

  • Patent number: 4719020
Abstract: According to the invention, the enclosure (1) contains a granular material (4) having a specific mass less, or respectively greater than that of the liquid to be treated. When the liquid is admitted through an upper inlet line (2), a granular bed is formed at the bottom of the enclosure (1) or at the upper part thereof and the colloidal particles form aggregates there. When the supply of liquid to be treated is interrupted, the granular material rises to the upper, respectively lower, part of the enclosure (1) and releases the aggregates formed, which can be recovered.

  • Patent number: 4693831
Abstract: A method for controlling the pulsing of a granular medium filter, based on determination of the rise rate of liquid level above the filtration medium. A pulse system is activated whereby sub-fluidizing pulses of a fluid are directed upwardly through the filter medium from an array of orifices, and each pulse is initiated whenever the determined rise rate attains a predetermined value. The pulses dislodge solids from the upper surface of the bed and store a portion of the solids within the bed itself at particular loci, for decreasing the resistance of the bed and reducing the rise rate. The frequency of backwash is optimized over a wider range of solids load, liquid load and other factors affecting the filtration.

  • Patent number: 4668405
Abstract: A method and apparatus for backflushing downflow filters is disclosed which comprises providing a closed container having contiguous, vertically adjacent filter layers. A layer of gravel is provided below the filter layers and is separated from the bottom filter layer by a foraminous gravel retention member. Fluid under pressure is introduced through a plurality of fluid nozzles into the gravel layer to backflush the filter layers. Backflush fluid in introduced at a sufficient flow rate to fluidize all of the filter layers to segregate them in accordance with their specific densities and particle size. Introducing the backflush fluid into a gravel layer through a plurality of nozzles helps prevent development of localized areas of high fluid velocity that can cause intermingling of the filter layers during backflush.

  • Patent number: 4643836
Abstract: A filter for removal of suspended solids from fluids utilizes pressurized air for fluidizing filter media as the latter is exposed to backwashing water. The filter includes a casing having upright walls defining an annular chamber in horizontal cross-section, and a portion of the walls have openings that are pervious to liquid and substantially impermeable to the media particles. The flow of the backwash water is directed toward the upright, outer casing wall such that the backwash water flows at a direction at an angle relative to the upward flow of the pressurized air in the bed as the particles are fluidized, to facilitate removal of the accumulated solids without enabling escape of the media particles. Desirably, pressurized air is introduced into the chamber at vertically spaced locations to insure complete fluidization.

  • Patent number: 4608181
Abstract: A water filtration system is provided by an upflow filter vessel containing a buoyant filter media in series with a downstream downflow filter vessel containing a nonbuoyant filter media. The buoyant media filter vessel and nonbuoyant media filter vessel comprise two compartments of a common tank, separated by a central wall. Water from the upflow filter vessel passes over the top of this wall, or through one or more openings in this wall, to the downflow filter vessel. A common waste trough extends from one end of the tank to the other. Weir plates are fastened to the upper edges of this trough such that the trough steps upwardly in elevation at the central wall. Waste materials from the upflow filter vessel pass over the lower of these weir plates and into the waste trough during cleaning of the buoyant media filter. In contrast, waste materials from the nonbuoyant media filter flow over the upper weir plates and into the trough during cleaning of this latter filter.

Abstract: A filtrating method for removing suspended solids from a liquid by passing the liquid through a layer of filter medium in a magnetic field, the filter medium layer comprising a collection of organic fibers and ferromagnetic metal fibers. Usual suspended solids and relatively large magnetic suspended solids are arrested by the organic fibers, while fine magnetic suspended solids are arrested by the ferromagnetic metal fibers subjected to the action of the magnetic field. The collection of fibers achieves a high filtration efficiency, has outstanding regeneration characteristics, withstands continued use and is therefore very useful as a filter medium.

Abstract: A liquid is filtered through a bed 7 of granular material and cleaning of the bed is conducted, when necessary, by upflow of wash water through orifices 9 and air through orifices 12 positioned mid-way between the orifices 9. An overflow 13 defines a free water space 15 above the bed and a baffle formed of elements 18, 19 and 20 surrounds the overflow outlet. During cleaning the wash water and air flow upwardly at rates such that some granular material is entrained by upflowing air bubbles and could be carried to the overflow 13 but substantially all the entrained granular material is separated from the entraining air bubbles at or near the top of the free space 15.

  • Patent number: 4478726
Abstract: This invention relates to a backwash outlet assembly for a liquid particulate filter. The outlet is adapted to retain particles which comprise the filter medium while allowing backwash liquid together with impurities to discharge to waste. The outlet comprises an outlet weir, and a substantially non-turbulent flow zone located upstream of the weir. A particle return passage extends from the floor of the zone to the filter bed and means are included to at least restrict back flow in the passage. Filter media particles carried in suspension in the backwash liquid fall under the action of gravity to the floor of the zone and by the velocity of the backwash liquid into the entrance to the return passage. Preferably the particle return passage extends from the zone adjacent the weir and filter media particles trapped in the return passage are automatically conveyed back to the filter.

  • Patent number: 4446027
Abstract: An upflow, buoyant media filter for industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment is disclosed. The filter bed is supported in a tank such that there is defined an influent reservoir below the filter bed and an effluent reservoir above the filter bed. By inducing a continuous circulating flow of influent within the influent reservoir, the waste is slowly agitated allowing it to coagulate. As the waste particles are carried to the relatively quiescent areas near the perimeter of the tank, those that are heavy enough settle to the bottom of the tank. The lighter particles are carried along in the circulating flow to continue the coagulation process. Waste particles which do not settle out are ultimately removed by the filter media. As the waste particles build up on the surface of the filter media, they agglomerate. As their density increases, these particles tend to drop off of their own weight or may be scoured off by the circulating flow of influent.

  • Patent number: 4290894
Abstract: A process and apparatus for cleaning contaminated raw water, in which raw water and a flocculator are introduced into the reaction space of a pressure vessel, which vessel has such reaction space at the bottom thereof, a filter space above the reaction space and containing a filter made of particles of elastic, granular material, and a clean water space above the filter space so that the raw water passes through the three spaces, whereby the pollution material contained in the raw water becomes enclosed by the cells of the floccules of the flocculator and the floccules become absorbed by the filter particles.
