  • Patent number: 6770483
Abstract: A test for determining the presence of multi-valent metal contaminants, such as arsenic, mercury and chromium, when present in certain valence states and a system for removal of these contaminants from water. Multi-valent metal salts, for example, Cr+6, which are highly toxic, can be detected and potentially removed from water through a redox reaction by reaction with iron or cobalt salts to obtain a reductive elimination of the Cr+6 by conversion to Cr+3. The determination may be in the form of a test, such that a tableted composition can be introduced into water for reduction of a metal salt, such as Cr+6 to Cr+3 in order to provide a visual indication thereof. The system for the conversion of Cr+6 or other reducible metal salts to other lower valence states having less toxicity would rely upon introduction of a metal salt in the form of a reducing agent which would be introduced into the water allowing for a reduction/oxidation action to take place.

  • Publication number: 20040016686
Abstract: A key problem associated with most types of separators based upon use of centrifugal forces is the difficulty such devices have with making absolute measurements of particle size and/or molar mass. By integrating means to produce and detect light scattered from samples undergoing centrifugal separation, particle sizes in the sub-micrometer range may be extracted from such measurements even in the presence of diffusion. The integration of light scattering detectors into an environment of high speed machinery is achieved by modifying the transparent surfaces of the sample holding region of the centrifuge. Such optical modifications allow the placement of stationary detector arrays able to collect light scattered by the samples during the brief collection times available. Three specific structures are addressed: A conventional disk centrifuge with a sample cavity integrated into the rotating structure; a disk centrifuge containing removable sample holding cuvettes, and an analytical ultracentrifuge.

Abstract: A system, method and apparatus employing the laminar nature of fluid flows in microfluidic flow devices in separating, sorting or filtering colloidal and/or cellular particles from a suspension in a microfluidic flow device is disclosed. The microfluidic flow device provides for separating a particle within a suspension flow in a microfluidic flow chamber. The chamber includes a microfluidic channel comprising at least one inlet port for receiving a suspension flow under laminar conditions, a first outlet port and a second outlet port. The chamber further includes an interface for translating a particle within the channel. The first outlet port receives a first portion of the suspension exiting the said channel and the second outlet port receives the particle in a second portion of the suspension exiting the channel.

  • Patent number: 6605219
Abstract: A wastewater treatment system for use with a conventional septic tank, or other small-scale wastewater treatment facility, for enhancing wastewater treatment without requiring complex control or maintenance limitations. The system incorporates a plurality of primary functions that combine to oxidize, nitrify, denitrify and remove water borne total dissolved solids prior to effluent discharge. Included is a fluidized-bed reactor containing biofilm attached to carrier particulates for use in the purification of wastewater. The fluidized-bed reactor is configured to include two distinct regions, namely a “lower” aerobic region and an “upper” anoxic region, during normal operating conditions. The lower aerobic region uses aerobic facultative bacteria to oxidize Carbonaceous Biochemical Oxygen Demand (CBOD), organic (Kjeldahl) nitrogen, and ammonia while consuming the dissolved oxygen in the water.

  • Patent number: 6605223
Abstract: An automated blood separation method and apparatus is described that allows for the separation of multiple units of blood simultaneously. The method and apparatus reliably and quickly separates blood into its components. An auto-balancing feature within the apparatus automatically preferably compensates for the changing state of imbalance, thereby eliminating the need for additional balancing steps during the separation process. The apparatus has a rotor into which a plurality of cassettes can be inserted. The cassettes have a number of sections for the containment of the whole blood and for the separated blood components, which are contained in disposable bags. The rotor is placed into a centrifuge assembly, and the blood components are then separated and transferred to the bags in the individual sections of the cassettes. Means for including secondary separation devices such as filters is included.

  • Patent number: 6596181
Abstract: A centrifuge rotor for separating components contained in a fluid, comprising an annular base having a first annular channel and an annular cover having a second annular channel for holding a flexible, doughnut-shaped centrifuge bag therebetween. When the base and the cover are superimposed, the first and second channels define an annular interior chamber having an off-centered figure eight configuration. The base and cover each comprise a grooved column axially centered and extending from the base top surface and the cover bottom surface, respectively. The flexible bag comprises inner and outer tubes which extend from the central core of the bag and which are seated in the column grooves to ensure that the bag is fixably rotatable with the rotor.

Abstract: A device is provided for the filter and collection of one or more material. The device incorporates a manifold with an inlet conduit and an outlet conduit, with an adjustable control handle on the top of the manifold and a baffle plate in the inside of the manifold. The manifold is sealed to the top opening of a collection chamber. During procedures which require withdrawal of material not to be collected, the control handle and baffle plate are adjusted to a pass-through mode which connects a internal adjustable conduit, which transverses through the baffle plate, with the lumen of the inlet and outlet conduits to form a continuous lumen with which to withdraw material not to be collected through. During procedures which require the withdrawal of material to be collected, the control handle and baffle plate are adjusted to a solids mode which orients the baffle plate to face both the lumen of the inlet and outlet conduits.

  • Patent number: 6582349
Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods rotate a processing chamber on a rotating element. The processing chamber includes a first compartment and a second compartment. Blood is conveyed into the first compartment for centrifugal separation into components. A liquid free of blood occupies the second compartment to counter-balance the first compartment during rotation on the rotating element. In one embodiment, the second compartment is served by a single fluid flow access. Prior to use, the single access is coupled to tubing, through which a vacuum is drawn to remove air from the second compartment. While the vacuum exists, communication is opened between the tubing and a source of liquid. The vacuum draws the liquid into the second compartment through the single access, thereby priming the second compartment for use.
