A gear moves the first end portion of the clamping ring circumferentially relative to the second end portion upon rotation of the gear. A manual actuator rotates the gear upon rotation of the actuator about an axis that is parallel or substantially parallel to the cover axis when the clamping ring is in the installed position. The gear is movable axially into and out of a blocked position in which a stop member blocks rotation of the gear. The actuator is interconnected with the gear to move the gear rotationally and axially relative to the stop member.

The cap 5 seals with a surface 4 on the inside neck of the vessel and is retained in place by fingers 8 engaging under a lip 3. The fingers 8 are retained in position by a retaining ring 12. Cooperating sets of cammed surfaces 10 and 13 on cap 5 and ring 12 act on rotation of the ring to axially separate the ring 12 from the cap 5, releasing the fingers 8 from under the lip 3 and permitting the lid to be removed. A drinking vessel with a wide neck can be reliably sealed without the necessity to provide screw threads on the outer surface of the vessel 1.

    Abstract: An innovative container lid having an integrally formed tamper evident band that goes through a series of changes or metamorphoses during the manufacturing and application process. The tamper evident band is attached to the lid at weak points on dogs formed around the periphery of the lid. When the lid is installed in a container, and tangential and radial forces are applied to the periphery of the lid, the attachment points of the tamper evident band rupture and the band is displaced in a rippling effect with the dogs locking into sockets formed in the sidewall of the tamper evident band. Continued pressure is applied to the side of the tamper evident band until it is pressed firmly around the entire periphery of the lid against the side of a container with all the dogs engaged in sockets.

Each tab also includes a thinned, stressed portion between the tang and the rim portion which is reactive to an application of heat to cause shortening of the tab length. The thinned portion also acts as a hinge to permit flexural displacement of the tab with respect to the body portion. The closure when applied to a container is completed by a band which encompasses the tabs, the band also being reactive to an application of heat to cause contraction of the band to insure continued engagement between the ledge and tangs.

    Abstract: A plastic closure securely mounted on the external threads at the end of a pipe, tubing, casing, or the like for protecting the external threads from damage. The closure comprises a tapered sleeve which is normally uncompressed and compressed by tightening a metal strap enclosing the sleeve for securing it to the pipe end. When the closure is mounted on the pipe end in its compressed condition, threads on the inner peripheral surface of the sleeve are urged into engagement with the external pipe threads for tightly securing the closure to the pipe end. The sleeve has a conical seat for the strap in its normal uncompressed condition, and in the compressed condition of the sleeve the seat is cylindrical relative to the axis of the sleeve. The sleeve has a flat surface on which the strap seal is placed and a slot for receiving a projection on the strap to prevent circumferential movement of the strap before and during tightening.
