Patent number: 4176755Abstract: A resealable container is provided for storing and dispensing liquids. The container is formed in a one-piece molded construction and includes a cap covering an outlet defined by an externally threaded neck, with a frangible section coupling the cap to the neck. An outer ring is threadedly interfitted over the cap in engagement with the neck, with the outer ring having a plurality of inwardly extending slightly flexible fingers which fit around the cap to captivate the cap. The cap is forced downwardly during downward rotation of the outer ring thereby severing the cap from the neck at the frangible section.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1979Date of Patent: December 4, 1979Assignee: Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: David A. Winchell

Patent number: 4159061Abstract: A closure assembly for a glass canning jar has an internally threaded skirt portion and a transverse lid portion having a rim section separated from a center section by a continuous weakened region in the form of a surface groove. A manual pull member is mounted on the center section. The transverse lid portion may be integral with the skirt or may comprise a separate member.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1977Date of Patent: June 26, 1979Inventors: Bille F. Cornelius, Robert E. Patent number: 4138029Abstract: In home canning equipment in which a two-piece closure is threaded onto a jar mouth to provide a sealed container, the band and lid of the closure are provided with respective sets of indicia which, when brought into a preselected pattern of registry by helical rotation of the band relative to the lid, uniformly provides such sealed containers with a degree of sealing gasket compression that is closer to ideal.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1976Date of Patent: February 6, 1979Assignee: Ball CorporationInventor: William P. Mahoney

Patent number: 4135866Abstract: Standard chemical laboratory glassware taper joints are retained by a threaded cap which, when screwed onto a male threaded part surrounding the female standard taper element with an O-ring surrounding the glassware part at the shoulder of the standard male taper holds the tapered surfaces together under resilient pressure to maintain tight closure at the taper interface. The O-ring, being compressed between the threaded retainer cap as the applied force, and the shoulder of the male taper element and the top of the male threaded part, as force receiving surfaces, provides a backup seal for the joint.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1977Date of Patent: January 23, 1979Assignee: Reliance Glass WorksInventor: Lyle D. Winkler

Patent number: 4122964Abstract: A semi-rigid, deflectable reusable lid in the shape of a disk and formed of a non-porous material is adapted to hermetically seal the open mouth of a container. The lid is positioned over the mouth of the container to be sealed and is retained in position by a threaded band. The inner lid surface adjacent the perimeter of the lid is elastomeric or pliable and is adapted to be depressed by the rim of the container during the cooling interval of the usual food processing cycle to provide a seal between the inner surface of the lid and the rim of the container. When the container is sealed, the central portion of the lid is drawn partially inwardly into the open mouth by the reduced pressure within the container. The lid may be formed of one or more types of suitable material to achieve the deflectable and sealing characteristics desired.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1977Date of Patent: October 31, 1978Inventor: Neal R. Morris

Patent number: 4121729Abstract: An improved home canning closure system is provided for a home canning jar featuring a plastic ring and a metal lid combination which is adapted to allow excess pressure to escape while preventing the escape of the contents from the container. The plastic ring includes an annular top panel portion and a skirt portion depending downwardly from the outer periphery of the top panel portion. The skirt portion incorporates threads on its inner surface to engage threads on the external neck of the home canning jar. The plastic ring features a downwardly and inwardly directed annular sealing flange depending from its lower surface which forms a spring member to maintain a constant force to bias the metal lid into sealing engagement with the upper rim on the home canning jar.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1977Date of Patent: October 24, 1978Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: Charles W. Husum

Patent number: 4116352Abstract: A pressure-type containment device with an improved lid sealing feature is disclosed. A lid disk seats on a shoulder along the interior wall of a container mouth and is held in place by a fastening ring adapted to fit into the container mouth. A resilient gasket, such as an O-ring, is wedged between the fastening ring and the lid disk along the interior wall of the mouth. The margin of the fastening ring confronting the gasket is tapered to urge the gasket against the interior wall. A pressure increase within the container expanding the lid disk causes compression of the gasket, enhancing the seal.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1976Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Assignee: Leonard RussoInventor: Charles S. Davis

Patent number: 4093094Abstract: An improved home canning closure system is provided for a home canning jar featuring a plastic ring and a metal lid combination which is adapted to allow excess pressure to escape while preventing the escape of the contents from the container. The plastic ring includes an annular top panel portion and a skirt portion depending downwardly from the outer periphery of the top panel portion. The skirt portion incorporates buttress threads on its inner surface to engage threads on the external neck of the home canning jar. The plastic ring features an upwardly and outwardly inclined ramp portion on its lower surface and a thin section at the junction of the top panel and skirt portions which combine to form a spring member to maintain a constant force to bias the metal lid into sealing engagement with the upper rim on the home canning jar.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1977Date of Patent: June 6, 1978Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventors: Ned J. Smalley, Ralph H. Whitney

Patent number: 4034883Abstract: A closure lid for a home canning jar includes a cap member threadably engaging the neck of a canning jar. A flexible dome shaped body extends upwardly through the cap member. A mechanism is provided for forming an airtight seal between the cap and the body. A mechanism is provided for forming an airtight seal between the body and an upper edge of the neck of the jar.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1976Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Inventor: Walter J. Wojcik

Patent number: 3980195Abstract: A tamper-proof closure, for a container, which requires removal of a tamper-proof ring before the container may be opened. The closure of the present invention includes a closure body which is threadably engaged with the finish portion of a container. A split tamper-proof ring is attached to the closure body at a plurality of severable locations at the root portion of a plurality of projections formed on the interior of the tamper-proof ring. A severable bridge extends between the opposed free ends of the split tamper-proof ring and connects them. The container has a series of external projections located below the threads of the finish portion. The projections of the tamper-proof ring lock with the projections on the container to prevent removal of the closure body. To remove the closure, the severable bridge is broken and the resulting free end of the tamper-proof ring is used as a pull tab to break the connections between the closure body and the tamper-proof ring.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1974Date of Patent: September 14, 1976Assignee: Owens-Illinois, Inc.Inventor: William E. Fillmore
