Patent number: 5947309Abstract: A container made from a rigid, polymeric material, or from glass or metal, has a frusto-conical or cylindrical wall defining an outer thread and having an upper edge, which defines a sealing bead extending circumferentially and having a cross-section conforming to a circular arc of more than 180.degree.. A closure made from a comparatively resilient, polymeric material has a circumferential recess adapted to receive the sealing bead with a snap fit so as to prove a liquid-tight seal. The closure has a frusto-conical or cylindrical skirt defining an inner thread. A reinforcing bead at a lower edge of the closure skirt clears the outer thread when the closure is snap-fitted or screwed onto the container and provides the closure skirt with sufficient hoop strength to prevent the inner thread from snapping upwardly past the outer thread upon relative rotation of the closure and the container to unscrew the closure from the container.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1998Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Premium Plastics, Inc.Inventor: Robert S. Patent number: 4228909Abstract: This disclosure relates to a closure assembly for containers, particularly glassware containers, wherein the closures may be readily removed even when the product is vacuum packed by the deformation of the cup-shaped body of the closure and the sealing ring through the application of a diametrically opposite squeezing pressure. Normally the deformation of the closure body is prevented by a removable tamper indicating ring which interlocks with the skirt of the closure body and which must be ruptured to effect the removal thereof. The closure may assume various configurations depending upon whether the container is to be reclosed and whether there is an internal vacuum. The closure construction permits a modified sealing surface finish on the glassware container.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1979Date of Patent: October 21, 1980Assignee: The Continental Group, Inc.Inventor: Frank H. Patent number: 4227616Abstract: This disclosure relates to a closure for containers primarily of the tumbler and carafe types and wherein the containers are formed of glass or glass-like materials. The closure is particularly identifiable by a downward and radial extension of the normal sealing ring to define a lug structure which interlocks with the exterior finish of the container and serves to retain the closure in place, both initially and upon reclosing. If desired, a shrink band or tape may add to the initial holding of the closure in place. Advantageously only the gasket material of the sealing ring is engaged with the finish of the container. The closure is distortable by diametrically squeezing the skirt thereof so as to break the initial seal in the event the product is vacuum packed.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1979Date of Patent: October 14, 1980Assignee: The Continental Group, Inc.Inventors: Frank H. Patent number: 3973690Abstract: A sealing closure assembly for a container mouth including a closure cap and a sealing member having a sealing portion which sealingly engages with a releasable locking fit with the mouth of said container and a cap engaging portion slidably engageable by an axially outwardly facing shoulder of the closure cap. The sealing portion of said sealing member remains in place in sealing relation to the closure mouth for a portion of the rotation of said closure cap means when the same is rotated in a direction to unthread the same from the external screw thread means of the container and is forced from sealing and locking engagement with the container mouth by the shoulder of the closure cap solely by the force created by the further unthreading of the closure cap means from said external screw thread means of the closure cap means.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1974Date of Patent: August 10, 1976Assignee: Chemtrust Industries CorporationInventor: Barry L. Patent number: 3963142Abstract: An improved sideseal closure and package are described in which a cut rubber gasket is used in a metal closure shell in a closure cap which is pressed onto containers for forming a sideseal. The closure cap has an integral cover and depending metal skirt with an inwardly facing channel formed in the lower portion of the skirt for receiving the cut rubber sealing gasket. The channel includes an inwardly directed bead at its top above the gasket for assisting in retaining the gasket in place in the closure cap. A preferred gasket cross-section is described for minimizing rolling of the gasket during cap application. A preferred finish for the glass container provides a slightly concaved sealing surface for engaging the gasket which is positioned downwardly from the container rim below a flared and slightly concaved guiding surface between the container rim and the container sealing surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1975Date of Patent: June 15, 1976Assignee: Anchor Hocking CorporationInventor: Alexander W.
