The lower cylindrical body has a boss that extends through the center of the o-ring. The cylindrical bodies are rigidly connected by a connecting link that travels through the center of the upper body and is rigidly attached to the lower body. A portion of the connecting link has external threads that mate with an internally threaded hole that extends through the center of the upper cylindrical body. By rotating a handle attached to the connecting link, the chamfered surfaces compress the o-ring, forcing it to expand outward and increase in diameter. Abstract: A test plug for sealing a waste pipe includes a generally cylindrical piston having an inwardly tapered lower end with a maximum outer diameter slightly smaller than an inner diameter of a waste pipe. A threaded rod has a segment that extends through the unthreaded central bore of a cylindrical holder and has a lower end connected to the piston. A knob is screwed over the upper end of the rod. An elastomeric O-ring surrounds the tapered lower end of the piston and is deformable in a radially outward direction into sealing engagement with an inner wall of the waste pipe by expanding the O-ring over the tapered lower end of the piston. The knob is turned to pull the rod upwardly through the holder. This causes the lower end of the holder to push the O-ring downwardly over the tapered lower end of the piston, thereby expanding the O-ring against the inner wall of the pipe. A plurality of gripping teeth are pivotally mounted in slots formed at circumferentially spaced locations about the cylindrical holder.

The canister opening is defined by a sidewall, and the closure comprises a skirt that is radially expandable in a controlled manner for clamping inside of the sidewall, or releasing the sidewall, to seal or open the canister opening. For the controlled expansion or contraction of the skirt of the closure, the skirt is flexibly connected to a convex bottom. The bottom includes a conical, relatively rigid intermediate ring panel sloping downwardly toward the interior of the canister from the skirt, and a rigid central panel circumferentially hinged to the intermediate panel and axially movable in a controlled manner for varying the slope of the annular intermediate panel, thus varying the effective diameter of the skirt.

  • Patent number: 4310029
Abstract: An expandable plug for use in effecting a fluid-tight seal at a remote location in a tube includes a compressible sleeve located between a rigid cylindrical member and a rigid sleeve. A bolt extends through the two sleeves and is threaded into the cylindrical member to apply compressive force to the expandable sleeve causing the sleeve to expand radially outwardly into fluid-tight sealing relation with the inner wall of the tube and radially inwardly into fluid-tight sealing relation with the bolt shank thereby protecting the bolt threads from contamination and corrosion. An eccentrically mounted disk is provided at the remote end of the cylindrical member to lock this member against rotation during installation of the plug.

  • Patent number: 4126240
Abstract: A unitary, integrally-formed, molded plastic closure used to seal containers having threaded necks and a radially extending collar situated therebelow. Closure includes internally threaded cap, plurality of tongues spaced about lower periphery of cap, frangible tamper indicating ring spaced axially below lower periphery of cap, and a plurality of thin webs interconnecting the ring and the tongue. Closure is advanced over the threaded neck on container by automated machinery so that ring abuts against collar on container. Indicating ring includes weakened area to allow limited radial expansion, and an inwardly extending radial flange may be defined at upper end of ring. Lugs are formed on periphery of tongues. After ring abuts against collar, continued advancement of the closure along threaded neck (1) shears the webs and frees the tongues from the ring; (2) subsequently enables the tongues to engage and enter the ring in serial fashion, and (3) resiliently interlocks the ring and the tongues.
