Abstract: To provide a disposable container which can be prefabricated under sterile conditions, a pair of concentric plastic rings are formed with interfitting, interlocking projection and recess means permitting the rings to be snapped together, the rings being additionally formed with matching fitting surfaces to interpose the edge portion of a gas permeable membrane therebetween so that, when the membrane is placed on the outer ring and the two rings are snapped together, the membrane is irremovably held. Preferably, the outer ring is made of a softer, yielding plastic, the inner ring of a more rigid plastic, with a projection snapping into a groove formed on the inner, more rigid ring, and the matching clamping surfaces for the membrane forming a sinuous, tortuous path with a flexible projecting lip on the outer ring fitting into a recess to clamp the membrane and seal the membrane in the structure.

Abstract: A watertight device for stoppering a bottle, in which a ring, made of flexible matter, is located in a groove or grooves of the stopper stem, the groove or grooves being formed partly with a notched surface, and partly with a smooth and circular external surface. The ring has corresponding mating, notched and smooth surfaces.
Abstract: A composite stopper comprises a body of resilient plastics material and a head surmounting the body. The head has a skirt extending around the body and a sleeve which is force fitted into a blind recess in the body. The fit of the sleeve causes the adjacent body portion to expand into engagement with the inner surface of the skirt.

Abstract: A two-part plug arrangement for a container includes an outer plug of soft resilient material and a mating inner plug of deformable material. The inner plug is seated within the outer plug, and the mating plugs are together seated within an opening of a wall of the container. Such opening has an annular turned-over wall along its circumference, and the outer plug has an annular flange adapted to engage such turned-over wall. The plugs are retained in place by being distorted radially outwardly whereby the outer plug sealingly engages the container opening and the two plugs are in sealing engagement with one another. One of the two plugs has a blind bottom, and upon the removal of the inner plug, the outer plug assumes its initial relaxed shape for removal thereof and reuse if desired.
Abstract: This invention relates to stopper devices, particularly stopper devices for closing bottles containing wine. It includes two parts, namely a hollow body of synthetic material defining a cavity open at the top and closed at the bottom and having a fluted flange at the upper end thereof. A bottle cap is mounted on said fluted flange and engages the flutes thereof to preclude relative rotary motion between said flange and said cap. The wall of said body of synthetic material includes an upper bulging portion and a lower cylindrical portion and a cylindrical stopper of cork is press-fitted into said lower cylindrical portion.

Abstract: An improved closure for fragile containers substantially filled with a gassy liquid, said closure comprising a combination of a cap for the container and a volumetric member partially within said cap and partially extending into the interior of the container. The volumetric member displaces and contains free gas generated by the gassy liquid thereby substantially reducing or completely eliminating the explosive potential of the container. The volumetric member is characterized by means that facilitate drainage of the gassy liquid should the liquid enter the member such as by expansion caused by elevated temperatures or inversion or shaking of the container.
Abstract: A material containing from 0.1 to 10 parts of polyethylene or ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer per 1 part of natural cork is provided as a substitute for natural cork in stoppers for liquid food or wine bottles.

Abstract: A closure for fragile containers of gassy liquids having a depending volumetric member extending down into the interior of the container to displace free gas from within the container, thereby substantially reducing or completely eliminating the chance of an explosion should the container be broken. The member occupies a volume such that when the container is filled with a usual amount of liquid either all free gas is purged by introducing the member or a small volume of free gas is left not exceeding the amount by which the liquid will expand if heated to the highest temperature normally expected to be encountered in use. The member is either a hollow, flexible walled body or composed of a cellular foam so as to be compressible under liquid thermal expansion forces to relieve excess pressure on the container, or is a hollow body provided with a small opening to admit liquid under expansionary pressures. The container is sealed by the member either in cooperation or in unitary construction with a cap.
Abstract: A canning jar sealing system has a reusable flat transparent glass lid with bosses of unequal diameter raised from its opposite sides. A peripheral flange portion of the lid is supported on the upper edge of a jar rim so that one boss extends into the mouth of the jar. A thin, flat, reusable, elastomeric sealing ring snugly encircles such boss and extends between the lid flange and the jar rim to form an airtight seal when a partial vacuum is created within the jar during the canning process. Each boss has one or more broad indentations along its peripheral edge which become filled by the sealing ring to indicate that the jar is sealed when the partial vacuum develops. A removable spring clip grips a bead or threads on the outside of the jar rim and exerts a downward force against the center of the lid to secure it to the rim of the jar until a seal is created by the partial vacuum.
Abstract: A fluid product reservoir to store a fluid product as for use in a pressurized spray system of the type concurrently discharging a gas and a spray product. The reservoir is leak-proof, economic to manufacture, and minimizes pressure fluctuations upon the dispensing of the fluid product. The reservoir provides a closed container having an open neck with interior walls defining an open throat. A plug is located in and closes the throat. An elastically penetrable insert is sealably located in a central opening of the plug. The method includes a method of storing a liquid product in a reservoir by providing a closed container having a neck portion defining an open throat. A plug is provided to close the open throat, and an elastically penetrable insert is provided in the plug. The method further includes a method of sealing the plug in the open throat.
