  • Publication number: 20030205565
Abstract: A method and apparatus for welding thermoplastic materials with a stir welding system using a rotating element pin or element with a geometry to induce frictional energy from the rotating element. A floating constraining surface that has a motion independent of the rotation the pin (preferably stationary) is used to constrain ejection of material from the zone where the weld is being formed. Molten material is retained in the weld region, avoiding weakness and voids at the weld joint. Optionally a system for introducing thermal energy into the weld zone in addition to the frictional energy is used. The system for introducing the thermal energy may be in association with the constraining shoe and/or the rotating tool, or a system independent of these.

  • Patent number: 4290544
Abstract: A mirror mounting is described in which a plane rectangular reflecting strip is deformed along the two longer edges thereof so that it is approximately tangent to the ideal mirror while the strip remains substantially flat in the direction of its shorter edges. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, a plurality of such reflecting strips are so formed by attachment to a supporting frame using a pair of elastomeric cushion frames to embrace the longer sides of each strip while leaving the shorter sides free. Advantageously, each reflecting strip on the frame is bent in a continuous manner the full distance of its longer side. The frame is preferably a rigid array of parallel channel members each of which is adapted to receive a curved T-section angle bar having the desired curvature of the reflecting strip. The angle bars are deformed into this curvature in a separate operation while they are being attached to the channel members.

  • Patent number: 4209684
Abstract: A high energy electron or laser beam is preferably used to assemble a drill bit. Bit segments are integrally adjoined together to form the drill bit assembly. Abutting confronting faces of the adjoining bit segments are aligned parallel to the drill bit axis and are fused together. The parallel alignment significantly simplifies the beam fusion process. The gage of the gage cutting elements of the bit segments is adjusted independently of the process involving assembly of the bit segments. Metal in a leg portion of the bit segments is fused in a zone of predetermined configuration to adjust the gage of the gage cutting elements. The zone of fused metal applies thermal contraction to the leg portion or permanently sets or relieves induced strain forces in the leg portion to permanently deflect the leg portion to a desired position at which the proper gage is obtained.

  • Patent number: 4175228
Abstract: A method of hot bending a generally straight wire blank of a material being brittle in cold condition into a wire element having straight end portions and coils formed therebetween. According to the invention the rod blank is hot bent without a mandrel by clamping the end portions of the rod blank by means of two clamping jaws. The rod blank is heated to a softening temperature in the central wire portion which is to form the coils of the finished wire element, while the end portions are kept at a lower temperature. During the bending process at least one of the clamping jaws is brought along a movement path adapted to the desired coil formation.

  • Patent number: 4143536
Abstract: The rotational speed of a screw propeller mounted on a propeller shaft of a ship is correctively increased or decreased by locally heating the back or face side of each blade of the propeller along a plurality of paths substantially parallel to and inward from the trailing edge of the blade in a region from a radial position about of 0.5 R to the blade tip, where R is the tip radius, particularly from 0.6 to 0.7 R, and cooling the parts thus locally heated thereby to form wash-back in each blade between the trailing edge and the heating paths thereof as a result of angular deformation accompanying plastic deformation due to the heating and cooling and thereby to decrease or increase the effective pitch of the propeller.

  • Patent number: 3973098
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming piston rings are disclosed. A split piston ring made by conventional processes is locally heated along its inside surface for a short distance either side of the split. This causes a short length of the ring on either side of the split to curl into a slight inward protrosion due to internal yielding of the restrained heated area and subsequent tensioning during cooling. The inwardly curved configuration prevents catching of the ring's ends on gas ports of ported cylinder engines.

  • Patent number: 3935413
Abstract: Apparatus comprising a rotary supporting table for moving circumaxial series of work holders in a predetermined circular path. Each work holder comprises an upright pin adapted to receive on and about itself a coil spring and a base member. The base member takes the form of an electrically conductive electrode part. At a loading station, springs are deposited successively on the pins and the table is indexed to move the pins and springs to a stress relieving station. Prior to the stress relieving station, a rotary brush engages the springs and indexes them about their pins to bring an end surface of an end coil into engagement with a small vertical abutment on the base member. The base members have inclined seating surfaces for the side surfaces of the end coils of the springs.
