Abstract: When aluminum members are arc welded at a welding speed of 2-7 minute, a quantity of input energy is remarkably reduced so as to form a welded joint free from deformation or strains. A weld bead with sufficient penetration is formed due to the high thermal conductivity of the aluminum material. The penetration is promoted by jagging the groove face. The heat balance between the aluminum members different in heat capacity from each other is stabilized by holding a jig having big heat capacity in contact with the aluminum member having smaller heat capacity, so that a good weld joint can be obtained regardless of the difference in heat capacity.

Abstract: A method of flash/butt welding an aluminum bicycle wheel rim, in which an aluminum sleeve having a dielectric anodized hardcoat surface finish is inserted into the center of the rim in order to support the interior walls of the rim during the welding process, is disclosed. The walls of a wheel rim or other similar metal profile defines an inner space in a tubular section of the rim. The sleeve is partially inserted into a first end of the rim and partially inserted into a second end of the rim. During the welding process, an electric current flows across a small space or gap between the two ends. The electric current melts the ends, at which time the two ends are pressed together in order to forge them into a single piece. The metal sleeve supports the inner walls of the profile in order to prevent collapse of the wall during welding. Due to the dielectric coating, the sleeve does not affect the welding circuit.

A powered carriage rotatably supports the normally cantilevered mandrel and advances it into position in the bore of the extrusion. Sets of hydraulically powered expansion shoes of the mandrel are spaced along its length so as to register internally with the location of external weld joints between casting and extrusion. Selective independent actuation of shoes or sets of shoes applies outward pressure locally to remove distortions in the "as received" extrusion, so as to maintain consistent fit up between extrusion and casting, facilitating consistently good welded joints. • Patent number: 4611751
Abstract: The invention comprises a method and an apparatus for the manufacture of cylindrical hollow bodies by the shape welding process. This apparatus comprises a connection between a rotatably mounted supporting body which can be driven and a base body onto which the weld material is deposited. This connection is effected by elastically deformable elements and is capable of changing in the radial direction. Metal profiles which can be deformed elastically are fastened, in a manner permitting detachment, to the periphery of the supporting body, spaced at regular intervals. The base body is composed of a metal sheet or strip which is wrapped around the profiles and attached to them in a manner permitting detachment. Preferably the profiles extend over the length of the supporting body. The deformable metal profiles may be designed as cylindrical tubes, without any discontinuities or as half-tubes, angle-profiles, Z-profiles, or corrugated-sheet profiles.

  • Patent number: 4493963
Abstract: A method and machine for weld cladding, particularly for welding material to a cylindrical plate, such as hardfacing or corrosion resistant alloys normally applied as claddings. The machine has a mandrel extending from it for supporting and rotating the plate. The mandrel is supported by beams and driven either by hand or by a motor. Rotating the mandrel rotates the plate supported on the mandrel through the path of a welding apparatus. Flanges can be provided to hold the plate on the mandrel. Bearings can be provided in the beams to facilitate the rotation of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4450338
Abstract: A method of fabricating a truss core sandwich panel of the type including first and second face sheets secured on opposite sides of a corrugated sheet. The first face sheet is welded to one side of the corrugated sheet and the second face sheet is positioned in contact with the other side of the corrugated sheet. A conductive mandrel is positioned between the first face sheet and the corrugated sheet, the height of the mandrel being less than the distance between the first face sheet and the corrugated sheet by a predetermined amount. The first and second face sheets are positioned between opposed welding electrodes, with the mandrel being coplanar with the electrodes. A welding force is applied to the first and second face sheets by means of the electrodes, the force being sufficient to deflect the first face sheet into contact with the mandrel and to bring the mandrel into contact with the corrugated sheet to permit electrical continuity between the electrodes.

  • Patent number: 4387845
Abstract: The apparatus of the present invention is used for holding and cooling a metal tube during welding. The tube has a cylindrical bore of predetermined diameter extending therethrough. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical mandrel having a bore extending axially therethrough. The bore has a central portion of reduced diameter and has outwardly tapering portions at its opposite ends. The mandrel also has a plurality of elongated axially extending slots formed in the walls of the mandrel so as to permit the mandrel to expand radially outwardly. Cam means are positioned within the mandrel bore and are adapted to be moved to cause outward radial expansion of the mandrel. The method of the present invention comprises placing the mandrel within the cylindrical bore of the metal tube, and expanding the mandrel radially outwardly against the inner surface of the metal tube, so as to hold the tube in place and cool it during welding.

  • Patent number: 4383356
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making packets of rotor or stator sheets for electrical machinery. At a certain station to which a preselected number of sheets are delivered, the sheets are both aligned and joined together. Aligning is effected by an aligning device which includes aligning pins which move into openings in the sheets. While the sheets are still at the aligning station, joining means effect joining together of the sheets. The joining means may include a piston pressed into the opening in the sheets and/or a device for welding the sheets together. At a packet receiving station before the aligning and joining station relatively high stacks of sheets are placed into magazine baskets suspended from a central turntable member. A piston pushes a predetermined number of such sheets upwardly through its respective basket into a receiving head which carries those sheets to the aligning and joining station. The finished packets are then carried by the aligning joining means to a discharging station.
