  • Patent number: 7918380
Abstract: A tapered tube manufacturing apparatus and method of operation comprises an entry station adapted to receive a tapered tube having an open, longitudinal seam with spaced longitudinal edges extending the length of the tapered tube. A feed line section moves the tapered tube from the entry section into a welding station while maintaining the longitudinal seam coincident with a pass center line which defines a direction of movement of the tapered tube through the entry station, the feed line section and the welding station. A pair of squeeze rolls in the welding station move the tapered tube through the welding station where the edges of the seam are heated, squeezing the open seam closed for welding the edges of the seam together, and then move the welded tapered tube into a cooling and transition station while maintaining the welded seam coincident with the pass center line.

  • Patent number: 6911632
Abstract: A method for controlling the edges (7, 7?) of a foil strip guided in a shaping funnel of a device producing tubular bodies from the foil strip by an overlapping weld seam using a guide wedge, the strip being then welded. According to the invention, after welding, the method consists in using a linear infrared sensor for measuring and evaluating a temperature profile perpendicular to the overlapping weld seam. In case of variation relative to the specific real profile, a signal is automatically transmitted to rotate the shaping funnel with the guide wedge, the welding being produced by the high frequency (HF) and the temperature profile being measured directly after welding.

  • Patent number: 6037556
Abstract: In high frequency welding apparatus in which high frequency electrical heating current is supplied to metal surfaces to be welded together by contacts engaging the metal which is advanced toward a weld point, the contacts engage the metal in advance of the weld point and have contact faces with downstream edges contacting the metal. The downstream edge of one of the contacts, or the downstream edges of the both of the contacts, is or are skewed with respect to the path or paths of the metal surfaces to be heated so that the downstream edge or edges extend at an acute angle of about 35.degree. to about 55 .degree. with respect to the path or paths of the metal surface or surfaces, the angle being intermediate the contacts and the weld point.

  • Patent number: 5922234
Abstract: Disclosed is a heating system for heating metal products in an oscillating induction furnace and a method of operation of the heating system. The heating system includes an oscillating induction furnace that in turn comprises a plurality of induction coils interspersed with a plurality of rollers. The metal products are oscillated within the induction coils on the plurality of rollers until heated to a target temperature. A logic device determines the power to be supplied to the induction coils, the number and speed of oscillation passes to conduct, the duration of time to be spent in the oscillating induction furnace, and the loading arrangement of the metal products within the oscillating induction furnace if two or more metal products are to be heated together in the oscillating induction furnace. The power supplied to the initial and final induction coils is metered by the logic device according to the proximity of the metal product to the initial and final induction coils.

  • Patent number: 5753894
Abstract: The invention comprises a continuous hot rolling method in which a rear end portion of a preceding metal block and a fore end portion of a succeeding metal block are cut and the metal blocks are joined to each other by heating and pressing followed by a finish rolling. A region of each metal block is restrained from a clamping position to the end portion thereof in order to prevent a change in level of the metal blocks in heating and pressing the piece. The end portions of the metal blocks can be thus prevented from deformation.

  • Patent number: 5710412
Abstract: Fluid tooling for use in an inductive welding system for creating a fusion bond along a bond line between two thermoplastic parts includes an elongated vessel made of fluid impervious flexible material and having an elongated axis and an open end at each axial end of the vessel, closed and sealed by end closures. A coil is received in the vessel for generating an alternating magnetic field transverse to the longitudinal axis. A linear guide in the vessel extends axially for substantially the full length of the vessel and guides the coil for movement axially through the vessel. Power leads are connected to the coil and extend through a pass-through in one end closure to connect the coil to a source of high frequency electrical power of about 35 KHz to energize the coil to produce an alternating magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 5637249
Abstract: For economy of operation, as much as possible of the total length of a steel strip being rolled by a Steckel mill should be maintained at an acceptably high temperature. To this end, the trailing edge of the strip is drawn into the coiler furnace to the extent possible without losing driving control of the strip. This is enabled by providing within or in close proximity with the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace a pair of preferably heated pinch rolls that drive the trailing edge of the strip (that has just completed a pass through the Steckel mill) into the coiler furnace as far as possible, leaving only a very short protruding portion of that trailing edge outside the coiler furnace. The strip may be left idle within the coiler furnace for as long a time as is required to bring the temperature of the wound strip up to a target operating temperature. Then the same pair of pinch rolls in or near the entrance/exit port of the coiler furnace drive the strip out of the furnace toward the Steckel mill.
