The present invention includes methods and systems for brazing and soldering using copper based or bronze type filler metals in lieu of silver containing filler metals. The systems and methods provide advantages in that the bronze filler metals are substantially cheaper than silver alloy filler metals that are commonly used. Furthermore, the present invention uses a low-temperature, water-soluble flux that provides for easier cleanup after the completion of the brazing process. Additionally, the present invention provides significant advantages over traditional copper brazing in that it allows for a one-piece workflow and eliminates the need for large component pieces and filler metal inventories.     Abstract: An apparatus and process are provided for forming a two-metal flat bonded article. A flat metal sheet in solid form is placed in the indention of a heat resistant plate. A second heat resistant plate is placed over the flat metal sheet in the indentation to form a flat metal sheet enclosure. The flat metal sheet enclosure is placed in a U-shaped inductor assembly embedded with a solenoidal induction coil. Supply of alternating current to the solenoidal induction coil inductively heats the flat metal sheet after which the sheet is withdrawn from the inductor assembly. The second heat resistant plate is removed and a bond metal in liquid form is placed over the top surface of the flat metal sheet in the indentation so that the two-metal flat bonded article is formed as the bond metal solidifies.

    Abstract: A shear-assisted solid state welding method for joining of metal parts, involves a first step of heating opposing surfaces in a non-passivating environment to a temperature in the hot working temperature range of the metal. A second step involves bringing the opposing surfaces into contact while still in the hot working temperature range, and applying compressive stress sufficient to substantially prevent sliding in response to shear displacement, causing plastic flow in the hot layers. A third step involves imposing relative shear displacement of the metal work pieces without disengaging the opposing surfaces. The shear displacement induces plastic shear strain within the hot layers to progressively induce bonding.
