    Abstract: Disclosed is an Al alloy for a welded construction having excellent welding characteristics, which Al alloy comprises 1.5 to 5 wt % of Si (hereinafter, wt % is referred to as %), 0.2 to 1.5% of Mg, 0.2 to 1.5% of Zn, 0.2 to 2% of Cu, 0.1 to 1.5% of Fe, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of 0.01 to 1.0% of Mn, 0.01 to 0.2% of Cr, 0.01 to 0.2% of Ti, 0.01 to 0.2% of Zr, and 0.01 to 0.2% of V, with the balance being Al and inevitable impurities. Also disclosed is a welded joint having this Al alloy base metal welded with an Al—Mg- or Al—Si-series filler metal.

    Abstract: A thermal spraying method involves the creation of a coating comprising titanium wire in the presence of nitrogen. The apparatus of the invention comprises a nozzle which has a cylindrical throat, with feedstock guides which guide the feedstock wires to a point of intersection in the throat. A current is passed through the wires to cause an arc in the throat, and a nitrogen rich gas under pressure is forced through the throat, generating a spray of molten particles which is used to coat a substrate. In a variation of the method, one of the feedstock wires comprises a binder metal, which produces a coating having enhanced toughness.

A weld overlay containing hard particles is formed on each tooth of a sprocket 6 such that each bead extending a direction (direction B) perpendicular to the rotating direction of the sprocket 6. A weld overlay containing hard particles is formed on the outer peripheral surface of a bushing such that each bead extends in a direction perpendicular to the rotating direction of the sprocket, the outer peripheral surface serving as a contact surface for the sprocket which engages with the bushing.

    Abstract: An apparatus (10) for welding a bore of a work piece 24 comprises a torch tube 18 carrying a welding torch 20. The torch tube is removably connected to a housing (12) which houses a rotating drive motor (14) for rotating the torch tube (18). A feed screw (34) extends from the housing. The axial position of the feed screw (34) is controlled by an axial positioning motor (16). In use, align bore bearings (26,28) are mounted to the work piece (24). Torch tube (18) is then positioned within the align bore bearings (26,28). The torch tube is then fixed in the housing. Feed screw 34 is adjusted until its free and contacts the work piece (24). Welding commences when drive motor 14 starts rotating the torch tube (18). In order to deposit a head of weld metal in the bore, the feed screw (34) is moved to adjust the axial position of the torch tube (18) and housing (12) relative to the work piece (24).

    Abstract: This invention relates to the art of machine repair. The present invention relates to an expandable, automated, welding device and methods used to build up material on the inner surface of a bore so that the bore can be restored to original working order. More particularly, the invention relates to the welding and repair of bearing or bore surfaces. The present invention is designed to allow easy setup and use through means of easy adjustment of the apparatus through manual adjustment of the significant positioning parameters, simple linear controls to adjust process parameters of the buildup process, and, relatively small in size. Moreover, the device allows for easy expansion of the welding torch allowing for a very broad range of engagement sizes. The present invention has a compressed air cooling means to prevent operation failure under high temperature conditions. Furthermore, a non-conductive coating has been applied to the welding torch making it less prone to damage, and safer to operate.

The operation of the welding head (16) also being controlled to deposit a weld bead as it follows at least a part of the path to build up a solid representation of the three dimensional volume model of the article.

Lowering of combustion temperature occurs when increasing the pressure and flow rate of the oxidizer or fuel over stoichiometrical or when adding an inert gas into combustible mixture. The catalytic member contains a catalyst selected from the group of noble metals, or binary oxides of the noble metal and rare earth metal, or other high temperature resistant catalyst capable to lower an ignition temperature of the oxidizer and fuel mixture.

    Abstract: A method for applying a stainless steel weld overlay on a substrate, e.g., a carbon steel or low alloy steel, uses an arc welding process. The process includes welding a stainless steel weld overlay onto the substrate using a shielding gas mixture including greater than 2% nitrogen by volume with balance being an inert gas or a mixture of inert gases. The nitrogen is of a sufficient concentration so as to eliminate solidification cracking in the weld overlay. In addition, the nitrogen may help to eliminate a mismatch in me coefficient of thermal expansion between the weld overlay and the substrate. Furthermore, if the weld overlay comprises only a single layer, the nitrogen concentration in the shielding gas mixture may be less than 2%.

    Abstract: There is provided a method of applying a weld overlay to a surface of a wastage susceptible chamber. The basic steps of the method include evaluating the post weld orientation of the surface of the wastage susceptible chamber resulting from the movement of the surface in response to the application of a weld overlay thereon and selecting characteristics of a weld overlay to be applied to the surface of the wastage susceptible chamber based upon the step of evaluating the post weld orientation of the surface of the wastage susceptible chamber. The basic steps of the method also include determining a series of weld torch engagement locations relative to the surface of the wastage susceptible chamber at which a weld torch is to be located for performing thereat welding operations which result in a weld overlay on the surface having characteristics corresponding to the predetermined weld overlay characteristics.
