  • Patent number: 10675687
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a highly insulating three-dimensional (3D) structure is provided. The method includes depositing a first layer of hollow microspheres onto a base. The hollow microspheres have a metallic coating formed thereon. A laser beam is scanned over the hollow microspheres so as to sinter the metallic coating of the hollow microspheres at predetermined locations. At least one layer of the hollow microspheres is deposited onto the first layer. Scanning by the laser beam is repeated for each successive layer until a predetermined 3D structure is constructed. The 3D structure includes a composite thermal barrier coating (TBC), which may be applied to a surface of components within an internal combustion engine, and the like. The composite TBC is bonded to the components of the engine to provide low thermal conductivity and low heat capacity insulation that is sealed against combustion gasses.

  • Patent number: 9074642
Abstract: A hydraulic fluid filler for a motor vehicle transmission includes a set of holes through which respective springs of a spring pack extend. The filler is generally positioned adjacent to a single retainer ring or between two retainer rings associated with the spring pack. In some implementations, the filler floats between the two retainer rings, while, in other implementations, the filler is securely attached to one or both of the retainer rings. The filler reduces the volume of one of two cavities, chambers, or cylinders positioned on opposite sides of a piston that selectively interacts with a clutch assembly to engage or disengage the clutch assembly. Reducing the volume of one of the cavities, chambers or cylinders effectively reduces the time period the spring pack is then able to apply a restoring force to the piston.

  • Patent number: 7157658
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for fabricating a dry cell storage battery from a plurality of dry cells by soldering a battery strap to terminals of adjacent dry cells in a battery pack. A resistance heat solder apparatus is provided for soldering a joint defined by an end portion of a battery strap and a terminal of a dry cell, so that adjacent dry cells in the battery pack are in physical and electrical contact. Terminal probes, connected across the secondary coil of a step-down transformer, are used to make contact with the joint to be soldered for applying a voltage across the joint. Terminal probes have contoured tips. A preferred embodiment provides terminal probes which are contoured to be a mirror image of the contour of the joint where the particular terminal probe makes contact with the solder joint. Application of a voltage across the joint provides a collimated current flow path through the joint. An intense heat is created within the joint by the current flow.
