Special Tool Or Tool Engaging Means Patents (Class 220/284)
  • Patent number: 4620641
Abstract: An access plug for providing a removable closure for a threaded hole in a housing of an electric starter or the like. The access plug is formed of a plastic molding material and has a cap member and a retainer member that are joined by a thin annular frangible portion. When assembling the plug to the threaded hole the plug is aligned with the hole and one end of the plug engages the housing. A tool now applies an axial force to the plug which causes the retainer member to be inserted into the hole, causes the frangible portion to be sheared or broken and causes a portion of the cap member to be inserted into the retainer member. When the frangible portion breaks a bead on the retainer member remains which is engaged by a ratchet tooth of a series of ratchet teeth formed on a part of the cap member.

  • Patent number: 4473169
Abstract: Disclosed are plugs and fasteners which deter unauthorized removal through the use of rotationally symmetric engagement recesses. The invention also provides special tools with projections complementary to the plug and fastener recesses and thereby permit easy removal of the plugs and fasteners without damage. An exemplary embodiment of an inventive plug contains a two-stage recess in lieu of the standard hexagonal head; each of the recess stages is rotationally symmetric, and the two stages have non-coinciding symmetry axes. The rotational symmetry of the recess stages defeats any attempt to remove an inserted plug by forcing commonly available tools, such as hex or square drivers and blade or Phillips screwdrivers, into the recess. An inventive tool for use with this embodiment has a two-stage projection complementary to the recess.

  • Patent number: 4333584
Abstract: A lockable closure for a container having a foldable annular wall advantageously has locking means whereby the closure can be releasably locked to the container. The closure has an annular bendable wall adapted to be disposed at least partially in contact with the annular wall of the container. The bendable wall has a reversely bent annular lip adapted to be disposed about the outer edge of the annular wall of the container. Upon the closure being disposed with its reversely bent annular lip disposed about the outer edge of the wall of the container, the bendable wall of the closure and its annular lip are deflectable with the foldable wall of the container to fold the bendable wall into and out of locking engagement with the foldable wall of the container. The closure is retained in either the locked or unlocked positions without additional forces or apparatus as it is substantially in a zero stress condition at these positions.

  • Patent number: 4284200
Abstract: A one-piece child-resistant dispensing closure for a container which has an open end. The closure has a skirt which mates with the end of the container and a top which spans the space defined by the skirt. Preferably there are two dispensing openings through the top, each of which is surrounded by an upwardly extending rim. The closure also comprises a lid for each opening and a hinge for each lid. The hinges and lids are integral parts of the closure. The lids have similar rims which fit around the rims on the closure top when the lids are swung over to close the dispensing openings. In the closed position, ribs on the edges of the pairs of opposed rims snap over each other and ears on the inner sides of the lids are closely spaced from a fulcrum on the closure top. The engagement of the ribs holds the lids closed. Pry means, such as a coin or blade, may be inserted between the fulcrum and a lid ear to pry the particular lid open.

  • Patent number: 4252249
Abstract: A threaded lid for closing the opening in a pump housing having a body portion and a gripping formation defined by a ridge on the body portion having a central portion and projections extending beyond the central portion. A juncture between the central portion and each of the projections varies gradually from a rounded angle at one terminus of the juncture to a gently sloping ramp at the other terminus of the juncture, so that a simple elongated tool such as a stick may be placed between the projections of the gripping formation and rotated to loosen the lid, but not to tighten it. Furthermore, the mildly curved S-shape provides surfaces which conform to the hand to enable substantial manual loosening force to be applied comfortably to the lid, whereas the surfaces of the gripping formation engaged by the hand to tighten the lid are not conducive to the application of a substantial amount of manual force.

  • Patent number: 4225045
Abstract: There is disclosed a container for containing a liquid such as paint, the container having a side wall and a bottom moulded in one piece from plastics material, the container being formed to co-operate with and retain a removable lid, and comprising a flexible inwardly projecting flange moulded integrally with the side wall and adjacent the top thereof, the flange being upwardly and inwardly inclined at its attachment to the side wall. Because the flange is flexible and is inclined to the side wall at its point of attachment to the side wall, the core on which the container is moulded can be withdrawn from the container past the flange, as the flange will deflect and ride over the core. The flange then springs back to its inwardly projecting position and serves to prevent liquid slopping out of the container if the container is filled with liquid on a standard filling line such as is used for metal lever-ring paint containers.

  • Patent number: 4177930
Abstract: A container closure especially for large containers and having circumferentially spaced tool access regions in a rim flange for insertion of a removal tool. These access regions are located between a base of the flange and a locking bead. Between the access regions, sections of a discontinuous locking bead extend around the inside of the flange, the bead being discontinuous across the circumferential area occupied by the access regions to enable a removal tool to be inserted downwardly through the access regions and between bead sections. Rim stiffening protrusions project from the outer surface of the flange beneath the access regions and across the circumferential line of the locking bead to stiffen the flange to prevent it from splitting when a removal tool is inserted down through the access regions and between bead sections.

  • Patent number: 4166548
Abstract: In a container and closure assembly, there is a resilient seal between the two components and the resiliency of the seal determines the normal relative closed positions of the closure and container. When the assembly is included within a stack, there is movement of the closure in the closing direction further to compress the seal. To prevent over-compression of the seal, opposed movement limiting surfaces are provided upon the closure and container, these surfaces being slightly spaced normally, but closing together to take loads directly from closure to container and thus avoid overloading the seal, when the assembly is located in a stack.
