Patent number: 5462186Abstract: A mating closure and finish system particularly adapted for use with containers, e.g. bottles containing carbonated beverages which generate gas in the bottle headspace and where the bottle finish incorporates at least two equally spaced helical cam tracks. The closure is comprised of plural sets of cam followers which fit into the cam tracks and where the cooperation between the cam tracks and cam followers produces an axial movement of the closure as it is rotated on the finish. For a two track system, which is the preferred embodiment, each track starts 180.degree. from each other and makes at least one full turn around the circumference of the finish. Also included are intervening stops and tapered speed bumps that contact and impede the cam follower(s) in the cam tracks during closure removal to effect a delay. Raised thread segments which define the cam tracks are intersected by a plurality of vertical venting slots or pathways along their helical length to vent headspace gas.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1994Date of Patent: October 31, 1995Assignee: The Coca Cola CompanyInventors: Joseph M. Patent number: 5431291Abstract: A blow molded, PET container having a unitarily formed body defining a hollow cavity for receiving a product. The body includes a base, a side wall, a neck finish and a mouth. The neck finish, located at the upper end of the container, is formed from substantially amorphous PET that has been thermally stabilized by a heat treating process. A thread is formed on the neck finish to receive a closure cap. The thread is generally in the form of a raised ridge that spirals at least partially around the neck finish. Spaced interruptions divide the thread into thread segments which reduce the PET needed to form the neck finish. The interruptions reduce the residual stresses in the neck finish and thereby reduce the distortion which occurs in the neck finish during hot filling or hot washing of the container.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1994Date of Patent: July 11, 1995Assignee: Hoover Universal, Inc.Inventor: Christopher C. LaBombarbe, Jr.

Patent number: 5417326Abstract: A container for transporting a syringe includes a tubular body and a tubular cap. The body has an open end to receive a syringe and that end has a pair of notches to receive and hold projections on the syringe so that movement of the syringe in the container is restricted. Threaded tabs extend longitudinally from the body in-between the notches and the cap threads onto the tabs to enclose the syringe. When the cap is tightened fully onto the body, the projections of the syringe are captured in the notches.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1994Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Inventor: Donald B. Winer

Patent number: 5307946Abstract: A blow molded container has a cylindrical neck portion with novel seven circumferentially spaced continuous spiral thread configurations on its exterior to immediately receive and engage an improved tamper indicating flexible cap comprising a top with an annular depending wall on its peripheral edge and seven circumferentially spaced continuous spiral thread configurations on the inner surface surface of the annular depending wall. The novel constructions enable the tamper indicating flexible cap to immediately engage the lead-in ends of the seven circumferentially spaced thread patterns on the exterior of the neck of the container without the heretofore necessary rotation of the prior art caps in order to engage the single spiral thread configuration on the neck of the container.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1993Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: Northern Engineering & Plastics, Corp.Inventor: Luca Molinaro

Patent number: 5307945Abstract: An injection molded threaded cap for use with containers of varying dimensions. The cap of the present invention includes a cover from which depends an integral plug. An auxiliary sealing ring is disposed at the outside base of the plug to compensate for differences between the diameter of the plug and the diameter of the opening to be sealed by the cap. To prevent doming of the cover of the cap, the underside of the cover has shrinkage resistance formations which provide the cap with structural resistance to the effects of shrinkage. The cap of the present invention further includes a ratchet ring having ratchet teeth designed to enhance the tamper-evidency of the frangible ratchet ring. In an alternative embodiment, the cap includes a thread form which reduces the amount of rotation required to install the cap onto a bottle neck.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1992Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Inventors: Walter E. Hidding, Douglas J. Hidding, Robert D. Hidding

Patent number: 5152416Abstract: A plastic container and lid both of resilient material with the container having spaced thread segments below its upper edge and the lid having a central section from which extends an outer sealing section with a curved upwardly sloping inner wall and thread segments on the inside of a skirt wall extending downwardly from the sealing section. Threading of the lid onto the container in a downward direction brings the inner periphery of the container upper edge into an increased contact with the lid sealing section curved upwardly sloping inner wall and the latter also exerts an outward radial force on the container wall to enhance the sealing action and which also tightens the engagement between the lid skirt and container wall in the areas of their mating threads.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1991Date of Patent: October 6, 1992Assignee: Tucker Housewares, Inc.Inventor: Timothy Cassel

Patent number: 5135124Abstract: A carbonated beverage container having a cap which remains connected to the body of the container during the venting. Interlocking tabs are provided, two sets on the cap and one set on the container body, in a manner which allows the cap to be sufficiently opened to vent the internal pressure of the container. One set of tabs maintain the cap in a sealed relation with the container body while the second set of tabs prevents the cap further rotating during venting. Once the internal pressure has been sufficiently released, the second set of tabs can be disengaged and the cap removed from the container body. The cap is fully engaged and disengaged less than one full rotation of the cap relative to the container body.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1991Date of Patent: August 4, 1992Assignee: Hoover Universal, Inc.Inventor: Gregory S. Wobser

Patent number: 4948001Abstract: This relates to a container having a neck finish which is provided with threads for receiving a closure and wherein the threads are blow molded in the formation of the container from a tubular parison. It has been found that in the blow molding of the threads, there is a thinning of the wall of the neck finish at the roots of the threads and under certain circumstances, when a closure is applied at a high torque, there is an axial collapse of the neck finish rendering the container unfit for use. The problem of axial collapse of the neck finish is overcome by interrupting the threads so as to provide axial beam strength at circumferential intervals around the neck finish.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1989Date of Patent: August 14, 1990Assignee: Continental Can Company, Inc.Inventor: Earl D. Magly

Patent number: 4883194Abstract: A temporary closure for containers such as storage tanks and the like has a cap portion with arcuate thread supports extending downward from a lower surface of the cap portion. The outer surface of the thread supports has screw threads thereon, the screw threads corresponding to screw threads on an inner surface of a tank opening. The closure is made of a one piece plastic material and the thread supports are flexible enough so that the closure can be quickly and easily inserted longitudinally into the tank opening with the screw threads on the closure overriding the screw threads in the tank opening. The closure is held in place in the tank opening by the screw threads and can be removed by turning or by prying the closure out of the opening with a suitable tool.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1988Date of Patent: November 28, 1989Assignee: Clemmer Industries LimitedInventor: Elson G.
