Patent number: 5256225Abstract: A method of securing a two piece plastic nozzle and overlying screw cap closure assembly to a plastic pail cover wherein the nozzle has a cylindrical body portion which is inserted into a cover opening to form a friction fit therewith. The overlying screw cap is then rigidly supported as a sonic welding horn is brought into axial engagement with the protruding nozzle body portion. Energization of the sonic welding horn causes the nozzle body portion to soften and deform radially outwardly into a circumferentially enlarged rivet connection. Continued axial displacement of the sonic welding horn creates a plastic bond about the periphery of the rivet connection so as to close off any leakage path therearound. At the same time any radial dispersion of plastic material resulting from the bonding process is locally contained about the rivet connection periphery.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 1992Date of Patent: October 26, 1993Assignee: Royal Packaging Industries Van Leer B.V.Inventor: Davis B. Patent number: 4944977Abstract: A friction welded part having a sealed flash trap is disclosed, along with a method for producing such parts. The friction welded parts have a hollow cylindrical part and a second part to which the hollow cylindrical part is friction welded. There is an internal flash trap in the region of the weld, and the hollow cylindrical part is pinched inwardly or a conical flange on the flash trap is deformed outwardly so as to seal the flash collecting portions of the flash trap from the hollow portion of the hollow cylindrical part remote from the weld. The method involves the conventional steps of rotating the parts with respect to each other under pressure, stopping the rotation, and exerting high pressure to form the weld. In accordance with the invention, the hollow cylindrical part in the region adjacent the flash trap is then forced inwardly or a flange on the flash trap is forced outwardly so as to effect the seal.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1989Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: A.R.D. Patent number: 4251482Abstract: A container is provided with a valve opening at its bottom wall to permit steam to circulate into the container and to permit any condensation to drain from the container while the valve is open. The valve is closed by an expandable chamber in response to the pressure drop at the end of a sterilizing cycle. A valve controlling the flow of steam into the expandable chamber closes when subjected to the high temperature steam, thus capturing steam within the chamber. This steam expands when the pressure drops to close the valve in the container. The container lid and gasket permit steam to be withdrawn from the container but prevent air flow into the container. A vacuum created in the container at the end of the sterilizing cycle holds the container lid in place and holds the valve closed.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1977Date of Patent: February 17, 1981Assignee: Roger S. Patent number: 4109818Abstract: A hermetic sealing-cover unit for a container for semiconductor devices is fabricated by applying to the cover a solution of a thermosetting plastic material in a drying solvent to form a thin plastic coating on the cover. The solution preferably is a 10% concentration by weight of epoxy resin in a solvent comprising a mixture of methanol, ethylene dichloride, and dioxane in the ratio of 50:35:15. The cover element is of a material impervious to moisture and air, preferably a material of the group which includes metal, glass, quartz, and ceramic. A sealing ring is formed of substantially chemically unreacted thermosetting plastic material, preferably the same as the plastic material of the cover coating, and is of a size substantially to register with the periphery of the cover. The ring is then pressed into engagement with the plastic coating on the cover at ambient temperature, while the coating is still tacky, and the drying of the coating on the cover is completed to adhere the ring to the cover.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1975Date of Patent: August 29, 1978Assignee: Semi-Alloys, Inc.Inventors: Norman Hascoe, Samuel W.
