Patent number: 5658532Abstract: A cuvette, to be used for measuring the properties of liquid contained therein by applying a measuring beam of light from a direction intersecting the vertical axis of the cuvette, includes a rectangular or square-outlined portion on the top thereof as viewed in a horizontal cross section, a cylindrical portion below the top portion, and a lower rectangular or square portion provided vertically below the cylindrical portion and having four sides parallel to these of the top rectangular portion, respectively. Thus, the cuvette does not unfavorably rotate when measuring the absorption of light transmitted therethrough. Further, an apparatus for transporting the aforementioned transparent cuvette, accurately controls the position of the cuvette during transportation so that a flat surface thereof can be irradiated with a measuring beam of light.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1995Date of Patent: August 19, 1997Assignee: TOA Medical Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tsuyoshi Kurosaki, Masayuki Nakagawa

Patent number: 5564589Abstract: A more efficient flat bottom pot or pan is obtained by (a) the introduction of an initial central downward depression in the bottom plate in the order of twice the plate thickness to avoid the undesirable upward bulging of the pot bottom as a result of aging, (b) providing heat transferring fins in a spiral pattern to the bottom and helical pattern to the side wall of the pot or pan for more effective heat transfer from the stove flame to the pot or pan, and to stabilize the pot with its central depression for placement on flat surfaces, and (c) providing a detachable shielding skirt around the pot to reduce the heat loss from radiation and convection.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1995Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Inventors: Hseuh-Chien Fu, Alvin Fu

Patent number: 5512480Abstract: The invention is a flow-through bioreactor for the retention and culture of cells in perfused media. The bioreactor is a generally rectangular vessel with inlet and outlet ports in the lid allowing for media flow along the longitudinal axis of the vessel. The inner surface of the bottom wall of the bioreactor has a plurality of generally rectangular grooves having a length, a depth, and a width. The grooves are positioned in the bottom wall such that their length is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the vessel, allowing media flow across the width of the grooves. Cells settle into the grooves, where they proliferate and differentiate, without entering the bulk flow of media through the vessel, thus avoiding loss of cells due to media flow. The preferred grooves have a width to depth ratio of about 1:1 or 2:1. The preferred width of the grooves is about 50 .mu.m to about 5,000 .mu.m, and the preferred depth is about 50 .mu.m to about 5,000 .mu.m.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1995Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Assignees: Baxter International Inc., Northwestern Univ.Inventors: Craig Sandstrom, E. Patent number: 5501758Abstract: A reusable and collapsible container having a collapsed configuration for storage and shipment and an assembled configuration for containing a product. The container is formed from a polymeric sheet and has substantially flat panels, hinges connecting adjacent panels, and releasable fasteners on at least some of the panels for holding the panels in an assembled configuration. The sheet has opposing walls separated by longitudinally extending webs. A portion of the hinges cross the longitudinally extending webs and are formed by hot compression of at least one wall of the sheet. Another portion of the hinges are longitudinally extending and are formed by cold compression of at least one wall of the sheet.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1993Date of Patent: March 26, 1996Assignee: North America Packaging CorporationInventor: Larry E. Patent number: 5497895Abstract: Transport containers are known that comprise walls (10, 10'; 12) and a floor (11). The side walls (10, 10') are connected to one another by frame parts (20). The walls (10) of these containers are made of plywood, chipboard or sheet metal. A considerable enhancement of shock resistance, in particular resistance to damage by sharp-edged objects, can be achieved by constructing the walls (10, 10', 12) of sandwich panels comprising two outer face layers and a honeycomb core connecting them, such that the cells of the honeycomb extend perpendicular to the face layers.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: Euro-Composites S.A.Inventor: Michael Rudbach
